Signature length concerns...

A while back I recieved a PM from a person asking me to reduce my signature length. I admit it was larger than six lines so I made it smaller. I still follow the rule religiously, and I haven't had a larger-than-six-lines signature since then. However, every time I go to GTPlanet I see many people still do not follow the rules; mainly, keep it under six lines long including blank spaces.

I found an old thread (above) discussing something similar, and even an Administrator has a signature that's seven lines long.

My concern is that people are not watching signature length closely enough. Are there any exceptions to the rule that I'm not aware of? Any help would be appreciated :) 👍

edit: I forgot my WebTV squishes everything together on the TV screen, so it looks like people have more lines than necessary. But still, many people have way more than six lines using a normal computer.

I don't think there are any exceptions to the rule, but as you mentioned, many people are getting away with it. I personally think Sage's tidysig campaign is an excellent way to keep them short. Many people have adopted the tidysig links in their signatures, and their sigs are smaller and neat.

I'm not sure it is a genuine rule, however Jordan and many others believe sigs have no need to be longer than 6 lines. So it is as good as a rule.

It's a rule that has never been taken seriously. No action has ever been taken against anyone with a signiture longer than six lines. Until the day it's enforced, the "rule" will continue to be abused.

It's true that signature length is not specified in the AUP or TOS - I have only set the limit here in this thread. It's a rule and it should be followed, but it is extremely difficult for the moderation staff to enforce and, as a result, is rarely adhered to. Limiting the number of lines from a technical perspective is virtually impossible. I can only limit the number of characters, but that doesn't have much impact when someone inserts their own line breaks (and vertical height is the main issue we're trying to control).
