Simcity 4

Go to www.gamefaqs.com and check out the FAQ's/Guides on Simcity 4 - they're very helpful.

It's much easier to get started in this than Sim City 3000 - the important thing to remember in this game is to keep your spending under control, and to don't build up excess capacity - i.e building zones that are too big, and micromanage schools and hospitals - there's no sense in having a hospital with 3300 patient capacity if only 150 patients are using it, decrease the funding to something more appropriate.

I haven't downloaded any patches yet, I am glad I looked into this thread. I thought it was just me that was having a little bit of trouble running the game.

I had a pretty good city going, but then like in one second it seemed, it all went to hell. I haven't really gotten a chance to start a new one yet, but I get on it and post some updates.

From time to time I'll have budget crises - I've run my big town up to about 110-120,000 pop now, and was expanding into a new commercial and residential zone. The town was running a surplus of ~1400-1800 per month.

The residential zone was wedged between an old commercial district and a new one, and it took off a LOT faster than I anticipated - it was high density, and three 3000 people apartment buildings went up within 6 months - suddenly I had to stick another two elementary schools to deal with education demands, and then of course another water pump and another power station - so suddenly I had about 5000 in cash left, and the city running a 500 per month deficit. I had to take out a loan to cover short term cash needs and wait for the unclaimed areas in the residential and commercial areas to take off - I also managed to save some cash micromanaging the power, and other hospitals and schools. Came good after about 18 months, and it's back to 1400 per month surplus.

I'm saving up for an small international airport - I want this big map to be my commercial centre.

So - how are people going with this? I've a solid little region going now, with three cities - a small one, a medium one, and now a large one I'm starting to get rolling along. The region's got around 100-120k people now. I'll put some screenshots up later (if I remember).

I get a little graphical update slowdown when moving around, but it's much better than before - I was finding it was getting unplayable as you approached 30,000 population, but one of my towns is over 60,000, and it's fine.
:P Oh yeah i forgot to post my remarks in here once i got the new patch. For me everything is running fine. I dont have too much slowdowns at all, compaired to before. My first city i started i have about 90,000 people living in. So far soo good. :P

Yeah - it's a big improvement with the two patches. It runs slower at Cheetah speed though. I'm going to throw another 512mb and a GEForce 4 at the PC in the next month or so - it'll be interesting to see the effect.

How many towns have you got running in you region?

This is my third town in the region - one on a mid-size square, one on a small square, and this new one, 'Ocean Views' on a large square.

I'm using the San Francisco region map.

It's got me intrigued how many people I could get in this town - could be 300,000...

This is the good side of town where most all of my buildings are nice and clean. That mid left building was my first big building.:P

Nice - I see you have the Casino!

That's a predominantly residential area, I gather. What's your traffic like?

With the patches you can turn off the auto-roads - some of the street layouts are disastrous...

Traffic was horrid while i was buiding up my city. But once i got everything in order (schools, medics, firestations, policestations) I finally got some bus stations and subways going on. And that helped my road traffic alot. :)

You guys are mean.. I cant get a city going for ****. Even with the guides help, i still suck.

The game is too laggy even with the new patches. :(

I have 384mb of ram (or so). Amd 700mhz, with a Radeon 9100 128mb ddr. I think thats pretty damn good.

Oh, and the guides suck.

Is there a way to delete Landfill?? I made a huge mistake with putting in a landfill, cuz now, nothing will build around that area! i tried exporting it to the neighbours....but that doesn't even work... I'm stuck!

Thanks For any help! :)

You have to dezone it and cut ALL funding to the landfill, including power, roads, and water. It will take several years for all of that trash to bio-degrade.

Damn, I got SimCity 4 a while ago, but I suck a lot at it...:irked:
