I'll pull this thread up again.
I got a copy of skate (as well as the PS3 tony hawk) included with the 60 gig PS3 I bought on ebay, figured I'd sell skate and play Tony.
I could not have been more wrong. skate is a great break from GT5P, and I"ve learned so much about skateboarding just from playing this game. Little intricacies, like what stance you are in (or even what part of the board your front foot is on), make a huge difference in the type of tricks you can do. Linking several tricks together gracefully takes practice, but I'm not particularly adept with the sticks, so I'm pretty sure anyone can learn.
I haven't played the Tony Hawk game. Nothing against it, but skate is really good, even if you don't really give a crap about skateboarding. Gameplay is pretty deep, the playable world is large and varied, and the career challenges provide a nice variety of easy and hard tricks to pass as you go along-and they have a habit of teaching you new things that you can incorporate into your runs. I don't see it getting old soon.
One of the better games I've played, and a nice surprise.
