GT5's tyre markings seem to last quite sometime, from all the videos I have watched including the Zonda R and M5 donut videos I have yet seen any marks dissapear. I don't think there is a time limit as the marks are still there for lap two of the Nurburgring but I am certain there is a limit (mark length limit) but I haven't seen it yet.
+1 👍

Also nice how they reflect the sun. Watch closely at the skidmarks at the end of that M5 clip, and you'll see the reflections.

Would be great if the track texture could change dynamicly, and save the skidmarks.

I honestly don't think this is too far fetched, at least for the Nürburgring. I say this because the Nordschleife has all that graffiti on it, so there must be some huge array of near continuous track textures.

If this is the case, it could be possible to modify the textures whilst they are in memory (and not being used for anything else) and then save them to the cache on the hard drive.

The next time they are loaded, the history of the circuit since that time is investigated and used to wash / re-rubber the circuit according to what races were held, whether it rained etc. and the textures are modified as they are loaded.

Maybe GT6? PS4?

id Tech 5 could theoretically do this, by its streaming of "mega textures" - I wonder if PD have had to do a similar thing, given memory bandwidth is good, but total memory is poor?

Mark length limit? That makes no sense whatsoever. Do you mean to say that when you lose grip, skid marks will stop being produced after they are a certain length?

No, they get "over-written", so the older ones begin to disappear, one quad' at a time (assuming this is the implementation used).

👍

I guess this means the only true legit gripe left on this forum is the whole "premium v standard" argument.

Never bothered about skidmark. But it will be nice if there are few marks which do not disappear and the racing line is darker than other parts

They might be caching the skidmarks on the hard disk, that way there is a limit to the amount of skids loaded into memory or a limit on much can be shown onscreen (depending on wich one is limited first by the hardware), but the total amount on the track is a lot more. This way, if the limit is 500 meters of skids and the game load assets into memory or show them onscreen in a 1 km radius around the car, you could, per example, have a potential of 10km worth of skids on Nur.

That'll be hilarious! 👍

"Most Creative Skidmark Competition Week 12 - Draw a horse with the Fiat 500"

👍 Almost pissed myself laughing, I was thinking more abstract loosely drawn rubber lines but an actual instruction like a horse would be far funnier.

i found an interesting video that confirms that the skidmarks don't gradually disappear, in this video the skidmarks were still there after completing 1 lap.

I am so sick of the background noise from the GamesCom videos! BE QUIETTTT!!!!

Nice vid Killa 👍 The acceleration on the Enzo past 300km/h is awesome.
