Never assume anything!! i went to a wedding yesterday and after the ceremony ( which was very nice by the way) we were sat at large round tables where there were six couples who hardly knew eack other. So the conversation stalled after all the " wasan't the bride lovely etc etc etc "....so then the men started to talk about sports and all manly things until someone mentioned ps3....well, that was it... all the grown up adult males all started talking at once about fifa, cod of duty and of course gt and the upcoming gt5.

Now why never assume anything?well, rightly or wrongly i assumed ps3 owners were mostly of a certain young age (nerdy, spotty no friends except on line and def no girlfriend ) and i was probably the oldest owner in the world!! in fact i was ashamed in public to admit to owning a ps3, logitech wheel building race cockpits etc!!my family all called me a big kid and in middle age crisis and i should take up golf or something like that instead of harping on about the new gt5.

ps no offence to spotty nerdy people of a certain young age...

Apparently the average age of PS3 owners are around the mid 20's.

Im almost 30 and I dont give a flying *add 4 letter swear word here* what people think or say about me owning a PS3 and playseat etc.... I will game til the day I die... and just for the record I have a GF and a social life... I just game in my free time... thats all :p So, no need to be ashamed... gaming is for everyone nowadays.. 👍

Nerd!

Ouch!!!... it was meant to be tongue in cheek....sorry if you didn't quite get it.... and yes i probably am a "nerd" but i seem to remember a film called "revenge of the nerds" so watch out!!!

ps.. the "watch out" was also tongue in cheek.... just in case you didn't get it...again.

cheers

^ It's alright, steve. Solid is also (how can I put this nicely?)... old and has a PS3. :D

Myself, I'm 32 and enjoy mine more than any previous console before it. I'm even getting to the point where my wife (shocker!) will fire it up to watch BR's!

I always assumed the opposite. Most PS3 owners i know IRL are in their thirties, where as those i know with 360's are generally kids. It's not exclusively split that way, but it certainly leans in that direction. I suspect the PS3's BD and generally more mature image (as well as price) just appeals more to the older or more casual gamer.

I hope that she has had a chance to enjoy SingStar on the PS3 with the online SingStore and ability to record videos and audio and take pictures with the PS3 Eye. The bonus is that with the PS3 version she can swap in her PS2 discs at the song selection menu and play them too.

You suffered from a popular stigma that has somehow been applied to video games, which you are now learning is not the true case. Here are some real facts regarding video games (in the US at least):
http://www.theesa.com/facts/index.asp
  • Sixty-eight percent of American households play computer or video games.
  • The average game player is 35 years old and has been playing games for 12 years.
  • The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 39 years old.
  • Forty percent of all game players are women. In fact, women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (34 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).
  • In 2009, 25 percent of Americans over the age of 50 play video games, an increase from nine percent in 1999.
So, never fear mentioning that you have a PS3, or play any video games. Many will portray it as childish, but the truth is that it is a very mainstream activity.

I run into the stigma with my father-in-law. After playing some games at my house my brother-in-law bought a PS2 and some games and when he got home his dad said, "don't you feel silly buying a toy?" The irony is that he devotes as much time and passion to watching sports (which is just a game) as I do to playing video games.

For the record: I am 30, work in management, married, and have a child on the way. Video games are my primary hobby and I am far from the oldest member on this site.

And we share the same first name. 👍

Wow I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
If boys under 17 represent 18% of gamers, I don't understand why I always see some 10 years old kids on call of duty.

I would guess that the under 18 crowd has more free time to devote to gaming.
That said I question why 10-year-olds are playing an M-rated game.

Women/Girls playing is a lot more common than I thought - unless, again, they're looking at who buys, versus who plays. Hell, my mom played the NES when we had it running back in the day (we still have it, just haven't played it.. it has issues with cartridges, of course)

My bf and I each have our own PS3, and our own TV attached to said tv; along with an x360 (rarely used), and .. well, every other system except for the Wii. lol BIG entertainment center. hah. (we share a place, I'm 26, he's 28). He's into RPG's and I am into nothing but racing games.. and Warhawk. I am addicted to Warhawk moreso than GT4's Photomode (i haven't updated that thing in forever and a half) and there are still people on there (warhawk); hell, there's even new-to-the-game people on there still.

As far as the "kids on [M] Game" .. easy, parent's don't pay attention to what their kids are actually playing, (exceptions to the rule obviously apply, or there wouldn't be a ratings system). My guess, is, they did the statistics on who BOUGHT one; how many people under 18 have that much money? and if so, how many actually bought it, versus getting it as a gift, etc.? Most teenagers don't have 700$ laying around, much less 60$/game.

We have tried the racing-wheel; it's in storage, because our place isn't big enough to house one permenantly; so once we get a larger place, we'll probably build a pseudo-cockpit for our wheel too. The bf is convinced he'll do better (i doubt it; without plenty o practice.. hah) That thing has some serious torque to the wheel though .. I need to practice, i've been a Dual-shock player until we got this thing for the PS3.

At least the PS3 has multiple uses, besides gaming. Intarweb, Social Networking (Home); Donations (Life); and an all-in-one media unit. So it's not just for gamers anymore :D

"The difference between the men and the boys are the price of the toys". I am 37 and have been playing games since Atari 2600 and have owned every console known, except Xbox 360. My wife just started playing Battlefield 1943, her very first person shooter and she liked the online thing.

Welcome to GTP! You should try out the Weekly Race Series (WRS) if you want some friendly competition right away. But first, you need to run the Qualifier. Again, welcome and goodluck with the wife :sly:

I was very drunk in a bar once and while I was getting a drink, some random guy just turned to me and said "I bet you play Call of Duty 4 don't ya mate?". I said yes and he told me his gamertag. I forgot it instantly but it was a very odd moment.

Did you guys stared each other in the eyes while a romantic music was suddenly playing? :dopey:

my dad plays console games as well, to be honest it was my dad who influenced me in playing computer games, and up until now we still play console games, my dad was more happy than me when i got my 1st ps3, he even asked me to buy GT4P ASAP, i was like lol and get it yourself, oh and btw my dads 41 =)

Isn't buying toys the motive behind working 9-5?

I guess I'm one of the smaller minority that simply raises the curve :)
I'll be 61 in a couple months.

I was an avid fan of motorsports when I saw the very first ads on TV for the PS1 bundled with Ridge Racer (1995 I believe). Bought one on impulse, never having played a video game in my life before because I thought that the cars looked almost real (all laugh now) :sly: I wound up buying every racing game that came out and became an avid GT addict. I literally bought every racing game that came out for the next 14 years and my wife coined the term "Vidiot" to describe me to her friends :)

When the PS2 was delayed, I bought a Dreamcast and every racing game made for it. I still have it and 12 racing games. I bought one of the first VRC's (Virtual Racing Chassis) from Bob Earl Racing in 2002 and a Playseat 2 years ago. I've owned (and worn out) every wheel Logitech has been able to produce. I still have 48 racing games for the PS1 and kept a dozen PS2 games after selling off 44 of them to one guy alone. I bought a PSP on launch day and almost every racing game for that as well. Did I mention I like racing :)

I guess you could say that I am just a typical gamer :dopey:

BTW ... I've already set aside the funds for NFS Shift, DIRT2 and GT5 (and I don't have a mortgage :))

ANFD, you are my hero.

Bonus points for being from Georgia - I was born in Columbus. :)

Now thats a true fan right thurrr! You can never let go of the kid inside, or else everyone on this earth will go insanse! We call those certain people criminals  Might i ask, what do you drive in real life?
