Hey all, what's the correct way of down shifting when using the H pattern shifter on a steering wheel.
Ok, so let's use Monza as an example: http://2wheeltuesday.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/monza.gif

By the time I hit Rettifilo Tribute, I'm in 6th and I need to downshift to 2. So here's the question (may be a very dumb question, but I'm honestly clueless lol), on the H pattern, do I need to go from 6th to 5th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd? or do I just hold the brake (to slow down into the turn) while pressing the clutch and shifting from 6th to 2nd?

I guess I'm just having a lot of troubles right now with the H pattern :(
do I slow down enough and then change gears or do I change gears AS I'm slowing down into the turn.

any help is much appreciated. if anyone has/knows a good video I would really appreciate that too.

Let's say like this:

You can do either..
Going in 6th, you can press the clutch, put the stick in 2nd, and as your speed lines up with the speed of the very top of 2nd gear, just let the clutch off.
This is a rather controlled way of doing it.
But, you miss out on some of the engine braking.

Going from 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd and eventually in to 2nd, with reslease of the clutch for each gear will give you better engine brake assist as you slow down.
Or perhaps not go down using every single gear. You can go from 6th, to 4th to 2nd..

The last move requires more co-ordination and more skill, but is the most effective way.

Then there's the "heel-toe" technique..
Press the clutch with you left foot, select gear and brake simultaniously (use you right foot for braking obviously since your left is occupied with the clutch). As you release the clutch, blip the throttle with your right heel (while still applying pressure on the brakes with to front part of your right foot) to meet up the revs in order to control your deceleration to the fullest.. Good luck! ;)
It's tricky as hell to get it right..

When you are driving with a clutch, as you might do in real life, the best way is to shift from 6th, to 5th and so forth until you reach the gear that you need for the corner, while heel-toe down shifting. If you don't heel-toe in GT5, then it's not much of a big deal as the physics are messed up in this sense, but if you don't in real life then the transmission might lock up.

And if you don't know what heel-toe down shifting is, then here is a lovely example done by Aryton Senna (Rest in Peace :( ):

I do 6-5-4-3-2 in the game because I feel more engaged with the game and my G27 while heel-toeing like a b*tch. In real life though, I just brake and skip to the proper gear when downshifting when driving normally on the road.

For casual, everyday driving you normally don't have to heel-toe down shift.

Great! Thanks for the advice.

This is DEFINITELY something that I need to practice more of..... lol.
I've had my G25 for a total of 4-6 days. Bought it last month, used it for couple of days then I went to college and didn't bother bringing any of my video games. But now I'm home for summer break and I definitely have much more time to practice this "heel-and-toe" style.
At the moment, I'm still getting used to the flimsy H pattern of this G25 lol... I might do the little tweak on youtube that gives the shifting more resistance.

Random question, to those of you with a G25/G27 and experience with driving a race car in real life, what do you have the Strength level of it as? What level is more realistic?
I'm currently at 8 and I feel like it's too "stiff" I have never driven a race car or driven on a track going 150+, so I really don't know if 8 is realistic at all? any help is much appreciated.

You really should though, as by not doing so, you are putting unnecessary wear on the clutch (effectively using it as a brake).

To the OP - the best method is this. You pick the optimum gear for the entry speed of the corner when you have braked enough. If you pick every other gear on the way down the box, you risk missing a shift or compression locking. There is no good reason to do this. Engine braking is largely a fallacy as the brakes on your car should be much more efficient at slowing the vehicle.

If you can (and it is really a technique worth learning), try to bring the revs up to suit the speed of the gear you are about to pick. If you are successful you'll be rewarded with a smooth downshift, and a stable entry to the corner. Not to mention a cool "blip of the throttle" sound to anyone who's listening.

PS - the "heel and toe" technique doesn't really require the use of the toe on the brake pedal, and the heel on the throttle. Given the spacing of the pedals on the G25/27, you should be able to do it using the ball of your right foot on the right side of the brake pedal, and the edge of your right foot to blip the throttle.
