There have been lots of connection problems lately in my nightly room. There have always been a couple or so regulars that sometimes couldn't see others on the track, but lately it seems many more have had the problem. When people had that problem, they would leave and come back and everything would be fine. Now that does not work all the time like it used to.

So I was thinking about changing to a fixed host room.

The other night I ran the room fixed host, and everything was great. Everyone saw each other. The black screen right before the races start, was nearly nonexistent. After the races no one got booted by the system. No one got stuck loading or with binoculars next to their name. It was the smoothest the room I have ever run.

Last night I ran another fixed host room and after about an hour and a half things went south fast. The last race I didn't even race in because I only saw two people on the track, even though there were actually 12.

I don't even know how that is possible. I was under the impression that in a fixed host room, everyone's PS3 communicated only with the host's.

The room was full. The PS3 is hardwired to the router, and NAT 2. I used the recommended race quality, standard.

Has anyone else had trouble with fixed host rooms? How can all that race data be passing through my PS3 without me even seeing it?

I don't know any of the technical stuff, but I avoid using fixed host rooms because I have been told that the number of connections required rises exponentially with the increase in the number of room occupants. It also requires the Host to have a very high connection speed and works best if all the room members are geographically close i.e. all in the same country.

I always set the race quality below the amount recommended in the game and also disable voice in an attempt not to lose bandwidth.

Setting the room to "Public" seems to produce a more stable connection than setting to "Friends" but has the disadvantage of unwanted entrants (who have to be kicked) even when the room is labelled as PRIVATE and some of those entrants can make the room unstable and / or introduce lag spikes. I haven't tried the club rooms for various reasons, but understand (possibly incorrectly) that they are less stable than public rooms. Some people recommend that in game background music should be set to 0 by all room occupants including menu music.

I presume that everyone who races with you @Chrunch Houston clears their cache before entering.

There is some very good guidance on this site from people with technical knowledge about how to optimise the setup of your PS3 and Rounter etc. I did a quick search, but couldn't find the particular guidance which I remember.

@Chrunch Houston ...

I usually race Tuesday nights with the COTW crew, and even though it's not a fixed host all the time, @McClarenDesign usually does a "room reset". By this he changes from our normal settings to a "one make race" using the Mito and once that all players are out of practice mode on the track, he then changes it back to cars selected from the garage.

It seems to work wonders, maybe give that a try.

Cheers

The guys I race with voted for us to switch to fixed host. I started last night.

The room peaked at 14 people, then it broke. The same thing happened, they could see me and each other but I only saw a few of them.

Tonight the same thing happened. I tried resetting the room by changing the track, but it didn't help. When the scheduled race started, I got the "race did not start..." message, even though the race started.

After a minute or so into the race about 2/3rds of the room got kicked by the system, then the rest were kicked. People rejoined, but I still could not see when they got on the track.

I guess my days as a fixed host are over.

This sucks.
