Playing online in sport mode or an online league or lobby. How would you prefer to finish a race?

I would prefer making it clean and close racing. Having a dogfight is more fun wherever you finish.

Many people think they are 'clean' cause they ddin't get a penalty or it's always the other guy's fault for not getting out of the way.

A better question would be, would you give up the win if you made a mistake without getting penalized for it. I had two such incidents of amazing sportmanship last week. One, a tight battle to the end, I passed into first on the straight after a half lap close chase (Nordschleife), he touched grass on the way to the final corner and inadvertently bumped me wide. Since he came from off track he did not get a penalty for it. He conceded first place after the final turn letting me pass to finish first.
In another race a car accidentally hit me on the long straight before carroussel and went off track giving me a 5 sec penalty. I was still in front at the finish and he gave me time to scrub the 5 seconds without passing me.

There should be a message, That was some true sportmanship.

When I bump someone wide (it does happen now and then) I immediately back off and let them recover, then keep my distance for a while until they have regained their rhythm before attempting another pass, making sure to brake even earlier.

I have my limits though. If you serve a penalty in front of me on the racing line trying to block corner entry with unghosting at the right moment then I have zero regrets when you get hit.

You are right, so I changed. Was worded incorrectly.

What do you do if you're in a close battle for a position, you get close to each other and the other driver goes off track. You think it may have been your fault so you wait and tumble down the order while you wait for them. Save the replay to check only to find out they binned it all on their own. I do that way too much.:ouch:

I'm all for fair play but it seems like racing incidents or anything with an element of doubt becomes tainted if you take advantage of it.

Sport and Lobby mode - clean driving (as much as I can). League mode - win at all costs! I am usually trying to win League races with an underpowered car (i.e. n100 vs n1000), so I might take some liberties to get the win.

Going all clean as possible, between giving space and respecting the lines.
Whenever i don't race online, i take my time with the AI and practice traffic driving and sometimes try to fight with an AI that tries overtaking.

Spot on. Respect first and foremost. A win is only a win if done in a fair manner. It's a hollow feeling for me if I've wronged somebody to snatch any position.

I had some abuse for being dirty a few weeks ago. I had the replay, edited it up from my and his point of view and popped it up on Youtube for him. He apologised and realised all was not how it seemed to him.

In the heat of battle on track, peoples brains can go for a bit of **** from time to time, me included but I like to think keep a lid on my emotions most of the time.

Tried clean, got fed up and frustrated enough to play dirty for a small spell. Not so much to win, I'd given up and don't want the cheap wins anyway, just to get petty and take some shots back.

Totally gave up with it and lost enough respect to become a little disruptive just because. Petty, I know. But the game became a real joke to me. Soon gave that crap up though as I'm really not one to troll games, just was too pissed off to just quit right away, lol. Ahh well, done is done.

Had a few months elsewhere finding my smile. Won't dare return to sport mode and made peace that I'll not platinum this GT, the 1st I'll not complete/100% was my trigger, lol. But I love the game itself too much and bought a cheap copy for hotlapping and building up my virtual collection. Never know, might get rank 50 one day still though :)

TLDR. Win clean, always. But the game has grown so bad that I just don't even want to try anymore.

Pretty much this, even if it looks like I was blatantly taken out in the heat of the moment, check the replay first, because if you make a call on track or even in the post race chat, and you're wrong, you look... well lets be honest a bit stupid

and yeah demolishing your reputation for a quick win isn't really worth it in any circumstances

Thank you for sharing this, Sven

It made my day to learn there are drivers like this out there. I was only briefly online with GTS many months back. I always raced clean and I usually finished last.

Then, for a few races, I was finding my way and managing (to my surprise) to pass a few people and get in to the P12 - P15 range. That's not great for most but it was big for me.

Problem was that I was getting punted regularly or defended by people using 2 and 3 movements, daring me to hit them, something I don't do. So, my impression was that there were no polite racers online in my skill rating.

Theres a reason why GTSport prioritizes SR Rating above DR Rating on matchmaking.

"To win at all costs" is a perfect recipe for a miserable life.

You better be a loser than be a griefer. Loser loses a rating, griefer gets a ban. Thats true for basically all online focused games and even real life sports.

The cleanest racing comes from joining online leagues IMO. Everyone relatively has the same mindset, and the racing is fun all ages and skill. You meet the odd celebrity alien in them as well. There are tons to join by looking.

There are no bans in GT Sport. I have never heard of anyone getting banned. The most the report function might do is increase the chance of a DQ warning after too many incidents. And that's just for one race with a small chance of getting the DQ 1 strike your out again warning at the start of the next race.

However when you give respect you usually get it back. And most people that drive aggressively usually crash themselves off when they have no more bumper to do the braking for them. Own up to mistakes and people will almost always forgive you. Then next race you will have an ally instead of getting a nose on your bumper at every corner. When you don't have the opportunity to make a complete pass, it's better to give the car ahead room to go fast so you both catch up to the front. Only at the front it makes sense to feign moves and get people off their comfort lines to set up a pass. I've also had people on the Nord that intentionally let me pass after driving patiently behind them for a while, since they figured we would both be faster if they were drafting me instead. Of course when you're in first you shouldn't do that :)

The poll is a joke. Win clean or win dirty... Tough choice..!

How about win dirty or lose clean? That is the choice most of us face.

The truth is, as reported daily in the penalty system gripe threads, Sport Mode simply fails in detecting who's fault a racing incident is. Epically.

Why more people don't completely abandon Sport Mode and go back to how clean racing was working in GT5/6 beats me. Without human hosted rooms, you are at the mercy of the automated penalty system. Hence, 🤬'd!

There are two different kind of dirty drivers out there on Sport Mode. Those without sufficient skill to know their braking points, likely exit lines and who ram you off track blithely giggling like little kids (which they probably are). You just let these ones go, they are almost 100% likely to go off track by themselves or spin, and you retake the position.

Then there are the ones with sufficient skill to equal or better your pace, but know EXACTLY how and where to hit you to gain an advantage. And there's nothing you can do about these unless you want to join them.

Other than join a human hosted clean room.

*raises hand slowy, in hopes someone raises their hand at the same time*
Nah, can't vote.
reeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! wHy U sO dIrTy!!!!!!!!!!!
Not that I'm all clean though  if push comes to shove I'd rather win in a campaign or GT League race. Maybe that's what they were referring to

But even being clean is still much better ;)

I have my limits though. If you serve a penalty in front of me on the racing line trying to block corner entry with unghosting at the right moment then I have zero regrets when you get hit.

I'd add lead car swerving under braking to this list. Poor move on their part as they can end up being pushed straight off through no fault other than not being able to predict their erratic driving.

Another good one is cars side repeatedly swiping you down the straight to try and get you to back down or push you into the wall. If I'm not laughing my ass off at the stupidity of it I usually just go inside and run wide through a corner at the next opportunity which can sometimes result in a penalty if they insist on staying alongside and then off - but not completely alongside as I'm not that evil. Result is that at least they're way behind now and I don't have to worry about them pushing me into a wall down the next straight. This can sometimes elicit a divebomb/t-bone attempt at the next corner, so one eye on the mirror helps to get out of the way if it happens.

In these cases its a far more enjoyable experience to just take the penalty than to deal with this crap for the rest of the race. From the other players perspective they probably make me "look bad" though.

And how could I forget players who miss their braking point, go massively wide or off who then think they can just slowly rejoin the racing line without a care for cars coming through. Bye bye clean race, hello penaltys.

Luckily these are still usually rare.

Also, I voted for the clean race wins. Much preferable.

I consider having a clean race and finishing higher than my starting position to be a successful race :) winning is always the ultimate goal but I’d rather finish last having a clean fight than winning with dirty moves.
