PD can release a livery editor with basic abilities and later on, increase it's portfolio with downloaded upgrades. The PS3 was basically built for networking, so use it to your advantage. Heck they should include a small sampling of it in GT:5P that would allow them to get some feedback on what needs to be added, replaced, and improved upon.

Another thing about liveries/mods, please oh please no fantasy parts that do not exist. Infact they can pretty much use generic parts for full racing mods, like carbon fibre shells(body), wings, hoods.

With that said, I wonder if they'll allow you to strip your street car down to barebones, and rebuild it as a race car. You know like semi pro racing, still a production car, but rebuilt with racing in mind. That would allow for more options in racing, especially online. Different car types and classes, pro=purpose built race cars, semi pro=rebuilt from the core car and amateur=production models with after market body parts, but still legal to drive on the street. I think that would make for interesting racing leagues, as many people would gravitate to a certain discipline, giving the game a more of a this is my kind of racing, and appeal to different types of racers. I love to race mildly modded street cars in GT series, but I do like to use the professional cars ever soo often.

I really like that sound of that. I would diffenately enjoy the Semi pro idea as thats something I've always wanted to do, I've even drawn some race cars I would like to make myself.

Without a doubt, Polyphony wouldn't use fantasy bodykits or any that don't contribute to the increase of performance. Turn 10 took the time to model the dynamics of the performance parts added to the cars, and according to Dan Greenawalt himself, even model how different intakes and engine builds affect airflow through the engine! Talk about attention to detail. And I think Kaz and the lads are working along the same lines.

Another related issue to what Savege mentioned, several people posted about this before and I think it's good to repeat here. The upper echelon of modified race cars like Japan's SuperGT involve extensive reworking of the chassis, including widening of the wheel base.and body. In the upcoming race modification process, I'm hoping that this is one of the options.

Going along with Savage's excellent post above, I'm also hoping that GT5 encompasses all the real world racing league's rules, and that it figures into race modding our cars. Here's what I mean. Suppose I buy an Audi TT or BMW, and want to race mod it. The game will present me a menu listing the different racing leagues the car could qualify for when modified, and the costs associated with those choices. Bringing it to spec for hobbyist or semi-pro leagues like America's SCCA might cost $10,000-50,000. Something more demanding like the BTCC might be $50,000-100,000, while serious stuff like SuperGT would be substantially more, and involve completely reworking the car. But after spending your money, you'd have a full fledged race car you could enter in those league's races. And if all you wanted was a stripped down hotrod, you could have that easiest and cheapest of all.

I would be all OVER this. I might not eat for days. :D
 
I really hope when you mod your cars, you can have both positive and negative backspacing for the wheels (if they implement wheel sizing). I hated how in Midnight Club 3 they allowed thinner and wider wheels/tires, but they would never extend outside the body. I wanted to make a muscle car with the wide rear wheels and thinner front wheels, but it just didn't look very good.
 
I said yes it will add because people in our time/age now want more things. With more wants, seeing as the game preceding GT5 had a photomode, i wouldn't see why they wouldn't implement a newer-based editor :)
 
The only paint editor I think PD should include are "Factory" color options and a number plate editor to determine online play.
 
So what about race cars? Do you not like professional racing? Race car drivers are able to take a car and create an entire racing identity out of it. If you don't want the same power to create masterpieces the rest of us do, the simple answer is, don't do it. You'll be happy, and so will we. ;)

I just finished a race series in Forza 2 with a Ford GT which I gave a simple but cool paint scheme to, along with sponsor decals tastefully placed on the body, like a real Ford GT race car might have. Some decals I made myself, like the IMSA and GT2 logos. It has a driver with a name too. And even though the replays aren't as good as Forza 1's, I enjoyed watching the cinemas of my car whipping around the track and just being able to beat M Rossi's McLaren F1. When I have time, I intend to shoot some pics with Forza's Photomode and see about posting them.

Maybe you only like to toot around in stock Supras, Corvettes or BMWs, but the rest of us are looking forward to something more. And for pete's sake, Gran Turismo is about motorsports, not just driving cars off a car lot and going fast. If you don't like race cars, why are you playing a racing game?
 
Er... if you mean you don't want to be able to recreate The Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo, uh... don't? ;)

In any case, it appears that Kaz and the lads do have something special for us in GT5, and I'm hoping that he starts tipping his hand just a bit more. There's an autoshow coming up in which he's supposed to be showing even more of Prologue, but I'm hopeful he starts mentioning details about the real Gran Turismo game to come. Remember, there are only 444 shopping days till Christmas 2008. :D

The Tokyo Motor Show's opening day is October 24th, the demo of GT5: Prologue is released prior to the show on, October 20th. I hope PD does include a livery editor so I can create factory paint schemes of next year's car models after GT5 starts to get old.
 
I made up some decals and a couple of race cars over the weekend, and I've been pretty happy with what I've been able to accomplish. But I wanted to share a couple of sites with you that made me choke. Forza caused some kind of explosion in the car creation community, and Forza 2 upped the ante about a megaton. Check out the creations some of these guys have made, and then if you still don't want to be able to make your street legal cars into race cars in Gran Turismo 5, then you're just odd. And make note: there's no such thing as a "factory" race car. ;)

Poke around in the Winner's Galleries board for a mouthwatering selection of superb racing coolness. I especially enjoyed Jamesways' incredible reproduction of the Polyphony Ford GT, something I was going to do last weekend.

The Forza 2 paint editor could use a few more vinyl shapes, but what they give you allows you to do photoreal graphics, so creating any race car from history or your imagination is entirely doable.

Now, to see about getting some clear shots of those Ford GT's graphics... :D
 
In response to the original question/poll, I voted yes but I endorse it under certain circumstances. I wouldn't want game play resources to sacrifice. The editor would need to be easy to use but powerful enough to actually get the job done. The online/sharing/selling aspects of the livery's would need major attention to really make it work. This last area I think Forza2 made some really good head way with.

If they can't deliver these things, or if it takes away from better game play, leave the Livery's to Forza2.

The funny thing about this car is that I spend only 30 minutes painting it, because that was the very day I was going on summer holiday and that's all the time I had.
But that was enough to make it look like an actual race cars from the 60's, when most liveries merely consisted of a number in a white circle and a plain background.
It was rewarded with a gifted car of my choice... and I chose the Lotus Exige Espionage.

Back on topic (I can't just un-bury this old thread only to talk about my car, can I), as most here have said, I do hope GT5 will include a user-friendly/powerful/supercalifragilisticexpialidocious livery editor.
I guess it makes your gaming experience much more personal if you can paint your car or simply add a licence plate with your name on. In 5 minutes, any anonymous Skyline among 48 similar Skylines becomes your own Skyline.

We all ogle race cars and their paint jobs, at least if you have any sense and taste you do. When we get into racing, we learn who our favorite drivers are and their liveries. They identify the racer and their team. It's their trademark and their statement.

Gran Turismo needs this kind of thing. It was okay in the days of the PS1 to have a basic racing mod that gave you a selection of 1 to 3 predetermined racing liveries available. But custom liveries have been going on for some time now, and Forza Motorsports is the most popular example. The PS3 is more than powerful enough to support something like this.

In Forza 2 I'm trying to create a series of racing liveries which will be my online identity. I want them to be good looking, cool and desirable. And I want the same thing in Gran Turismo 5 so I can have an online identity in that game too. If I join a race and see nine Raybrig NSXs, I'm going to harf. That would be the worst thing ever for a system so powerful, and a game with so much prestige and fan support. Since Kaz and the lads have stated previously that they intend to have something like this for us, I'm hoping that they can deliver in a big way. When they do deliver, it's usually huge. ;)

Oh well, back to some car painting in bug riddled Forza, sigh...
 
Personally I would be happy with racing modifications over a full livery editor, as long as the variety of race mods for each car is reasonable and generous.

Great idea :)

Being able to pick and choose what stays and what goes inside and outside the car, and have those changes impact the performance of the vehicle would be unreal...
 
at least there should be a license plate editor just like they did in metropolis street racer on dreamcast a few days ago. i´m tired of reading the default "NISSAN"-make license plate for the 100th time.
 
As long as they have decals and real dupont or house of color schemes that would be straight.....and i hope you could grab sponsers this time around...
 
I think its now become a standard in racing games (console and PC) to be able to at least do a minimum of customization on cars. Be it only Front and Rear Spoilers (with added benefits of aerodynamics) and at least basic paintjobs (colors/patterns) as well as at a big minimum, real-life sponsors/liveries. No need to go all "Need for speed" like, like some of scared off...

Forza2's serious racers/community have proven that its definately something important. Like any games, the ability to create one's unique and personalized avatar is crucial. Most MMOs do it, most RPGs do it, and now most Action games - even with main characters (Mass Effect) does it... Cars are, in other words, simply another kind of Avatar that should reflect the driver's persona. Real-Life drivers have very personalized cars for a reason; not just to show off sponsors, but to clearly identify and separate themselves from the crowd... it started with the Identification numbers, and now its full on "War Paints"... (there's a reason why they call it that...).

although i do agree that Forza's 1000 Decals per car side is a bit too much. They did that to allow all the "Manga" and "Master Chief" paints to be put on cars... but then again... if the engine can take it... why not? I mean, we're talking real race cars being sponsored with complex and unique color and design schemes here... Why not let whoever is good enough do it?

If you want to express yourself go paint a picture. Compose some music. Gran Turismo is a racing simulation meant to give you an accurate idea of how it feels like to race cars. If you want to show off your bling go play some game like Need for Speed, Forza 3, or Midnight Club DUB Edition.

Custom Liveries in Gran Turismo are like a rewind button. It can be used for small good but for the most part it will be abused as the rewind button will be abused.

Allowing someone to paint a Ferrari Hot pink is like allowing some slackers to "express" themselves by spray painting the Eiffel Tower.

It's called upholding the integrity of the simulation. Once you allow a livery editor that gives you the ability to do whatever you want to a Ferrari and other road cars you've not only cheapened the simulation you've just made all the real world paint schemes available for each car obsolete and worthless.

So do GT Legends and rFactor.

GTR2 is 100% racecars. As is GT Legends and rFactor. Notice in my original post I had no problem with a livery editor for pure racecar only simulations.

If you add a livery editor that can be used on road cars you might as well not give factory colors as an option when buying a car. You might as well have a color wheel that allows you to choose any color under the sun which of course threatens the integrity of the game and simulation aspect. For example, a Ferrrari F40 should NEVER be any color other then red. When racing online I don't want to race a lime green Ferrari F40. The moment that happens I won't be able to take GT5 seriously anymore just as I dont take Forza seriously

If, for some odd reason Kaz gives in to the casuals and includes a livery editor I hope there is some option to make all the cars online look like their original selves. I dont want to see poke-cars or halo posters on cadilacs. They can keep that to themselves.
 
Like I said in the other thread, since this is a simulation of real life, shouldn't there be the option of custom colors and paintjobs? I could go down to the local body shop and have my vehicle painted whatever color I want, so why couldn't I do the same in the game?
 
I think a livery editor is a must for all the reasons made already by the 'for the idea' guys.

Regarding the 'against the idea' argument, I've yet to hear a convincing case not to include it. If you're worried about racing against cars with pokemon or knobs drawn on them, just avoid those rooms online. You'll soon know where to look for the proper/mature GT5-ers.

And the argument stating 'there are already 1000 cars in the game, isn't that enough' just shows you are missing the point of a livery editor all together.

I don't necessarily want to race every time I'm online. Above all else I'm a car enthusiast, and I want to be able to immerse myself in the whole automotive experience, from racing... to tuning... to designing.

With private rooms, you won't have to worry about that problem, especially when racing against guys you know like me and GTP_CWR.
 
Given the amount of time i can waste on any of the GT games a livery editor is both unneccesary and a waste of time. My time that is, when i spend 2 hours making a sweet custom vinyl for my honda civic :lol:

Sounds like we will be getting bodykits this time, which is the important aspect of body styling 👍
 
I'm indifferent. I have a few good ideas for liveries, but most editors are so difficult or clunky to use that I can never get them to work the way I want them to. I'd like to be able to use Photoshop to create a livery on a blueprint and then export that into the game, but I know that will never happen.
