So, who has their Wii?

In longterm the Wii kind of sucks IMO... Ok we have the first class Nintendo Inhouse games, a hand full at least, and a great Wiimote/Nunchuck. Awesome for multiplayer, but honestly, in 2008 I'll play 3rd(4th) generation Xbox360 games and 2nd(3rd) generation PS3 games on 1080P with Dolby 5,1... what else do wii have ? Bad textures, low performance of the day before yesterday and low res without effects... Wohooo...not...

EDIT : Note that I am not a graphics fanatic, I still play SNES/SFC and I enjoy it, but I would have preferred to pay500 or 600 bucks for high end performance instead of 250 for this average machine.
I know that fun is not directly related to hardware performance, but it helps a lot to increase the intensity of the atmosphere etc.... and as much as I like Mario and such, I think it was a totally wrong decision of Nintendo. For me at least, maybe not for Nintendo and their business...

You know I just don't want to play Egoshooters or Racing games on this machine, why should I if I can get High Def and 10 times more moving objects and whatnot on 360 and PS3 ? Sure multiplayer parties and Nintendo games liek MArio - I'll be there and I'll have a lot of fun. But I can't see myself buying a multiplatform game for Wii....

I think the high-definition graphics of the PS3 and 360 are a bit overrated. Sure, they're technically more advanced, but does that automatically mean the games will always look better? Not at all.

If it has a clean, solid presentation, I'd easily buy a multi-platform game for the Wii.

Well I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens... but honestly, if you have an HD TV, the difference will be huge. Take a PC game and change the resoltion from 640*480 pixels to 1920*1080 pixels... leaving out every other aspect ( like better graphics in general, since the PS3 and 360 are let's say twice as powerful as the Wii ) a multiplatform game just can't look as good on the Wii... I mean, it's not just about the looks, but there is a certain standart and people get used to it in a short time and I don't think that the Wii can keep up to that level... which is sad imo.... and I really know that at the end of this current generation I'll have X games for the Wii and 3X or 4X games for each the 360 and the PS3... not only because of the grafics, but also...

I don't know if I should get a Wii, I'm thinking about a 20GB PS3 but don't know which one to choose.

Any help?

Well, if you can't live without Mario and Zelda and have 3 or more friends ( also casual gamers ) in your house several times a week, then you can think of buying a Wii. In every other case : PS3 ... that's how I see it... I mean let's face it, we are on GTplanet and that's why we need a PS3 anyway in midterm, right ?

Agreed.

Ciao!

1. I didn't know 20GB PS3s will be available in Europe.

2. I agree with Max_DC. Unless you have a lot of people coming over to your house, and you simply can't live without Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc etc, get the PS3. It's much, much, much more futureproof, you're not going to get bored with it, it has a much better online service, better games, etc. My Wii, while it's fun and all, is overrated. ExciteTruck and Rayman are entertaining for 20 minutes, and Zelda is probably going to be one of the few great games in the next few years. I wouldn't be surprised if I got bored of it in 3 years and decided to sell it on eBay. Right now I'm playing Super Smash Bros Melee more than anything. And with the motion control, while it's cool, I'd much prefer to play multiplatform games with a standard controller. Heck, the PS3 has the Sixaxis tech, gives you a pretty good taste of the Wiimote.

Pretty much, if you buy a PS3 or an X360, you just can't go wrong with it. With the Wii, you can, though it's unlikely. You get what you pay for I suppose. And yes, if I had the choice to choose a PS3 and not be able to own GT5, or a Wii, I'd get the PS3 without hesistation.

The Wii is a great choice if you're looking for something different and new...and if you can stand to not have the sharpest-looking games.

The 360 is the best choice if you're looking for a "traditional" game console, with a good ol' fashioned gamepad, an excellent online service, and plenty of great-looking games.

The PS3 is a good choice if you like Gran Turismo, Ace Combat, or Metal Gear Solid (or any other worthwhile Sony-exclusive series). Otherwise, there's no point.

I can kind of agree. But honestly, did you notice that after an hour of playing you hardly notice that you play with the Wiimote instead of a traditional pad ? I felt like this, although I really like the new concept, at least for certain genres. Oh and after 3 hours you'll notice the Wiimote again, because your hands start hurting  ;)

@ PS3, well, although it is still too early to confirm, I am sure that there will be a ton of exclusive games for the PS3, especially from Japan. You know, games that can't be directly ported ( or in a weak way ) to Wii and won't be ported to 360 because those games mainly sell in Japan. That's why I think that the PS3 is not really an alternative to the Xbox360, but more or less an important musthave for 360 owners aswell. The often quoted sentence : " Buy a 360 and a Wii for the price of a PS3" is not really the best solution imo.

Nah, whatever, as always it is the best way to own all consoles, but those who can't or don't want to go that way have to decide for themselves. All I wanted to say is, that I really can't recommend the Wii as your only console, only, maybe, if you are that Mario/Zelda freak with splitscreen multiplayer addiction...

However, I played a little more Monkey Ball yesterday and I really had fun with it. The new Wiimotecontrol is really adding a lot to the single player mode, although I still feel uncomfortable ( since you constantly have to point the Wiimote towards the floor in order to keep the monkey rolling fast ;) ) after a rather short time of gameplay...

In my instance I don't have an HDTV yet and don't plan to for a while. I know what the FCC regulations are for HDTV here in the states and so I am biding my time until the televisions drop in price because that is all there is.

Also, I don't plan on buying a PS3 until GT5 comes out anyway. Gran Turismo has always been my first game. It is the motivator to make me buy a Playstation, otherwise I may have never stepped away from my PC games and I would probably be playing WOW (thank you PD).

So, I am looking at one year, most likely more, until I plan on buying a PS3. Heck, it will probably be a PS4 by then at this rate. I was planning to ignore all the new systems until GT5 came out, but then a friend bought a Wii on launch day and was showing it to me. I realized that the sports games had a completely different aspect to them that would make up for the lack of graphics. These woudl be teh multiplatform games that I can see people buying. I want Madden and plan to get Tiger woods in March. So, when my wife asked if I wanted any of the new systems for Christmas I told her a Wii. Of course, this was post-launch and so it will be more like January when I get one.

Anyway, my point is that for me the Wii is a great holdover until the games I really want to play come out. I like first-person shooters plenty, which is the best the other two seem to be offering for me right now, but as the attitude drifts online I am becoming less interested. I love a good single player story and Halo 2 showed me that it is less important now and more is devoted to multiplayer. Plus, I had so many bad experiences with online gaming from my PC days that I don't relish jumping online unless I am playing friends. It got to where everyone was cheating somehow and the new consoles are so powerful that I foresee people finding ways to cheat online just around the corner.

So, for me the Wii is a great way for me to play some "next-gen" games, even if the graphics are downgraded. But until GT5 comes out and I find myself wanting to play a game where the graphics matter I'm not rushing to buy a PS3 or 360. Perhaps if I get an HDTV first I might find myself motivated sooner, but I doubt it.

Honestly, I see the PS3 as an X360 with more multimedia features (Blu-ray, super large HDD for music, photos, and videos, etc), and some good exclusive games. I'm not really comfortable dishing out $600 to play a few games on it, where as with the Wii, I'm fine with forking over $250 to play some great games and play them in an entirely new way.

However, if Blu-ray wins the format war, and the PS3's price has dropped by $100 or more, my parents and I will probably buy one since they like movies and I like games. But that war isn't over, and I might end up buying the HD-DVD add-on.

Both of you have good points, no doubt about it. The PS3 is expensive and without a HDTV it's not really a gigantic step up regarding graphics and more important HDDVD/BR become totally useless since there is no difference on normal TV's. So I totally understand Duck.
As for you Foolkiller, well you have no 360 and no PS3, and you want to go with Wii... well I mean why not, but you shouold give the 360 a chance if the PS3 is not worth the money for you atm...
Cheating is not really a problem afaik, never had any problems with it. You know, there are no mods and therefor very little ways to cheat ( Apart from software bugs, but then they are simply fixed ). And well you can play with friends online, so that would - as you said - solve the cheatproblem anyway...

You know it's just... you'll buy a PS3, that's for sure right ? So if you buy it in 2008 you probably pay 400 $. So for having the fun right now until 2008 you'll have to pay only 200 $, which is less than the Wii. And in total it's like 2 $ a week...

I guess that'S really personal preference, I never really cared so much about the "control"... PC gamers say : mouse/keyboard or nothing for egoshooters... I say : I don't care, I play both with M/K and pads. The Wiimote is funny for certain genres, but i doubt that racing games for example are better, well actually I think it's far worse than ordinary pads. And even if the handling was better, I still have half the details / opponents / effects than on PS3/360.... I don't want to flame or sth like that, I have the Wii and I don't regret buying it. But you know, basically it's average performance with a Wiimote. After 3 months you are used to the Wiimote, I say it won't be sth special anymore ( I mean the sixaxis pad of Sony is almost the same ) and then all that's left is the inferior hardware. Warioware, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Wave Race, pilot Wings... great confirmed games and games that should be released in the nea future. But where is GT ? Enthusia ? Forza ? *insert game here* ? And even if similar games will be released - and I know that I'm repeating myself here ;) - they will look worse. It's one thing to take your N64 out of the corner and play some good old Mario64/Goldeney, bringing back the old times, the times you had so much fun it's a totally different story if you buy new games with dated technology.
Personally I'm like this : As soon as a new generation arrives, I usually don't buy a single game for the old generation anymore - as good as the final software might possibily be. As the 360 was released I stopped buying PS2/Xbox games ( with some exceptions )... Whatever, I'm talking way to much here :D, I think you both know best what is right for you, and as you describe your opinion, it makes perfect sense...

But none of the current games interest me and I don't cough up that much money on things that I don't try out first. I have plenty of friends that got a 360 and I intend to put plenty of playing time into the 360, but I wasn't impressed with Forza and unless it blows me away with Forza 2 I won't be looking at the 360.

The PS3 has to much system usablity from what I've seen so far for people to not find a way to cheat, especially with possible third-party devices. It may never happen and once I get my PS3 I may happily kill all you fools in a FPS online. But until I see it I will stick to my guns. Besides, whatever happened to good story and entertaining adventure instead of just running around trying to shoot your friends for no reason (Dear God, I've gotten old)? Although, I am hopeful that the PS3 will have RTSs such as Starcraft that I can enjoy with a keyboard and mouse.

You know it's just... you'll buy a PS3, that's for sure right ?
As long as they make a Gran Tursimo.

Or I can get a Wii now, for Christmas (so I'm not paying at all), and it is something my wife is interested in playing games on for once.

The Wiimote is funny for certain genres, but i doubt that racing games for example are better, well actually I think it's far worse than ordinary pads.
I agree on this point and when I said sports I was thinking football, baseball, etc.
And even if the handling was better, I still have half the details / opponents / effects than on PS3/360....
I only own one racing series, and no excite anything will change that.

But where is GT ? Enthusia ? Forza ? *insert game here* ?
Some day coming to a system, which I will THEN buy.

The Wii is just something new for now that is in a price range that I could afford, or in this case get for Christmas, while the PS3 and Xbox are just too expensive without any games that have made me rush out to buy one. Availability has a lot to do with it too. If the PS3 comes out with something great (GT5?) and I won't have to fight to get a system then I would actually budget to save up and buy one.

Trust me, for me the Wii is free, otherwise I would just be waiting for a PS3 and GT5.

Maybe I'm just a Nintendo fanboy, or maybe I'm just the antithesis of a graphics whore, but I still really don't see what all the fuss is about with the Wii's graphical shortcomings when compared to the PS3 and XB360. I mean, it's obvious that the PS3 and 360 are better, but just because the Wii's graphics are worse, that doesn't mean they're bad. I was just playing my GCN copy of R:Racing Evolution on my Wii yesterday, and I was reminded of how great the game looks, despite its hardware limitations (if only the physics were as good  ).

In fact, I've always been one to appreciate well-done special effects more than sheer resolution. For pretty much every PC game I ever play, I always turn all of the options up to full, and then scale the resolution down until it runs smoothly, even if that's 640x480. I have no clue why anyone would want to play at 1920x1080 with a poor framerate and/or downgraded textures and special effects, yet that's what some (not all) next-gen games on the 360/PS3 are and will inevitably be -- really sharp, yet really sparse and empty-looking, and running at less than 30fps.

I disagree completely. I think that with the "hold the Wiimote sideways and rotate it to steer" concept, the Wii will actually be a popular and rather successful racing-game system (a new concept when it comes to Nintendo). The Wiimote will never replace something like the DFP, but hey, the Wii could have something like the DFP, too, because it has USB ports.

Name three X360 games that are empty looking, run at 1920x1080 (or heck, even regular 720p), and run at less than 30fps.

Personally, while I think rotating the Wiimote to steer is fun in pure arcade titles like ExciteTruck and potentially Burnout (if they decide to create a game for the Wii), I'd much prefer an analog stick and triggers.

I didn't mean to imply that there were several games that exemplified all two/three traits, but Sonic is empty-looking and can get slowdown, Import Tuner Challenge is empty-looking and can get massive slowdown, TDU gets slowdown, PGR3 is rather sparse at times, Ridge Racer 6 is pretty but often sparse...my point is that some developers are obsessed too much with resolution these days (coughGTHDcough), and don't focus enough on making worlds rich, lush, and more detailed.

I want to add to this real quick.

Just reading this page of the PS3 General Discussion thread people have been able to copy game saves over to their computers using memory cards, thumb drives, etc. How long before people are uploading saves with more stuff or editing game files to cheat online? The PS3 is like a massive computer/entertainment center in one and now it allows people to edit things the way a computer does.

Mario Kart, say what say what?

Classic controller, what?

Awesome!! My cousins are getting it for x-mas! :D I'll be over at their house 24/7!

@ the "crappy" graphics of the Wii: Graphics is the last thing I look for - my three favorite games ever are F-Zero X, Star Fox 64 and Mario Tennis and I could literally count the polygons just by looking at the screen from 10 feet. Nintendo has always stood for pure gaming fun, and I hope that it will remain that way.

Just got my Wii for Free! I did this sweepstakes drawing and was surprised as hell to get a response. So anyways add me for having one now. :)

Finally got one on saturday, first impression is this looks like lots of fun :)

Fired it up and got the family in for a game of bowling, and my dad won :ouch: i'm never going to hear the last of it.

I don't have WiFi in my house but am considering doing it since I intend to get a PS3 and Wii. I wonder, though, is this WiFi Max thing a feasible option? Just curious if anyone has tried this. Also, will it work with a PS3 as well, or just a Wii? If it is noticeably slower or refuses to work with other systems then I will just go for a new router.

Well, if it works with laptops, I would think it would also work with the PS3...

Though to be honest, I'd rather get a new Wi-Fi router. Datel isn't really synomonous with quality, and I wouldn't want to deal with another wireless thing. Besides, I don't think you can secure your connection.

Good lord, I hadn't thought about that. A router it will be then.

Thank you, sir.

I finally got my Wii on Sunday.

My wife and I got up early and then went to Target, who was supposed to be giving out vouchers at 7:00 AM. Due to the freezing rain no one was standing outside, but were sitting in their cars staying warm. No one came out at 7:00 to hand out vouchers so no one got out of their cars until about 7:45 (15 minutes before opening). The employees stood inside looking at us until 8:00 and then let us in. We walked in an orderly line directly to teh electronics section, walked around the entire area, saw they only had one Classic Controller and then walked out. It would have been nice had the employees told us when we were all standing around outside.

So, the next place to open was Circuit City, and they had advertised having Wiis in that morning's paper. A caravan of cars went from Target to Circuit City and my wife decided that if it was going to require this much work then she was going to make sure we got one and jumped out to start the line by the door, even though it was 8:15 and vouchers weren't supposed to be handed out until 9:00. No employees even showed up until 9:00 and when someone in line asked the manager of he had any Wiis for us all he said was that he had some sidewalk salt if we wanted to do that for him. At 9:30 he finally came out and handed out vouchers for the 10 Wiis they had in stock. Then we all got back in our cars to warm up.

So, at 10:00 Sunday morning I had a Wii and Madden '07.

After five hours of play I stopped because my shoulder was starting to hurt and then I flipped through the manual to see where it suggested a break every hour.

Today I am going through and reworking my Gamefly Q so that I can get some Wii games to try out.

Games I am looking at right now(some at my wife's suggestion). Please tell me what you think of them so I know what to expect.:
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Rapalla Tournament Fishing (I like to fish)
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Excite Truck
Zelda

And I am going to borrow Marvel Ultimate Alliance from a friend that already beat it.

I plan to buy Wii Play next month and Tiger woods '07 in March.

Congrats on the purchase! Do you think it's use of the controller outweighs the graphics? Or not? I may buy it when Madden 08 comes out, but I'm not sure if I want graphics, custom soundtracks, achievements, etc, or a killer control set-up that'll make the game last more than a month.

Trauma Center: Never played it, but it seems interesting.

Rapalla: I'm not a fan of fishing games, nor do I know how good the controls are.

WarioWare: Heard it's pretty good, and it has some very interesting ways of how you play the minigames.

ExciteTruck: Very fun... in 15 minute bursts. It very eerily seems like Hydro Thunder with trucks. I'd rent it first.

Zelda: It's one of the best games of all time. I think it's safe to say that if you don't buy it, you're nuts.
