My neighbor has a 1994 Mercedes S500, and I cant seem to find any info on it performance wise to save my life. He told me that the owners manual says it has 315hp, but thats all he knows. He thinks its a hot car, but I say that the Prelude will hold its own against it, not win but be able to keep up at least. This is all on a track of course. This all started the other day when he blew by me on the frontage road when I was driving my dads CRX. I am now out to avenge the death of the CRX (on the track of course)

yea, thats what I figured. Do you know any 1/4 mile times or 0-60? I figure that they will be somewhat close but favoring the Mercedes because it has torque

Well, they weigh 4700 lbs... and from what I am finding, I would say zero to 60 in low 7's, maybe?

500SEL would do it in 7.4s with the 326 horse engine. An S500 would probably do it in roughly the same speed. Every Prelude made since 1994 could beat that.

1994 Mercedes S500 sedan: 315hp 5.0-liter V8; 4830lbs; 4-speed automatic; 7.2sec 0-60

I would estimate the quarter at 15.4sec-15.6sec and the trap speed at around 93mph.

These are as-new figures, of course. I would be surprised if it still managed them.

Those numbers are right in Prelude territory. I figured it would be at least a little quicker than the Lude though.

your prelude probably has it only on acceleration from a dead start. at freeway speeds, roll on passing power is huge in the benzes.

I was actually thinking the exact opposite of that. Preludes are known to be "highway queens" LOL.

On another note, I tried to IM his son, one of my friends, last night to tell him what I found but he wasnt online. :grumpy:

While I love my Mercs, our Preludes--in 5spd manual trim--will take that S500 in the 0-70(ish)mph. On a roll it would definately depend on who is in their "powerband"--which might be the Merc on most occasions. At 40mph--drop down to 2nd gear and the Prelude is all about being a Japanese sake rocket. Its a hell of a passing gear if I do say so myself. This is all of course on the track you see.

The Mercedes has a 15-year-old 4-speed automatic. It'd probably hunt for the right gear for a week before selecting it. I think the race in question would be close no matter which way you did it - provided it was in a straight line.

This is true, there is also a pretty nasty 3rd gear powerband from about 62ish since 2nd gear ends at 61, unless you take it into the redline to fuel cutoff.

as the others said already, the prelude might take the sexy benz from 0-60, but once on the highway and u floor both of them, i believe that you will see the rear of the S500.

God i love that old W140 benz. Real Tank on the road

You shouldn't take it "all the way up" anyway...you're better of shifting around 7300~7500RPM to get the most out of your rev-range. At least that is what my personal experience is in my own car. Anything above 7500 is a waste in my opinion. I would probably think you'll agree with me here.

I think it would be closer than what you would think. If anything the Prelude low-range is where it would be destroyed. 0-30ish mph the Benz walks it. *edit* Unless you do a hard clutch dump at a high RPM?

It wont be like a ferrrari walking a geo I would assume? The Lude is not THAT slow up top.

Unless the Geo had the same engine as said Ferrari. :sly:

I completely agree with you on that. But some people tend to take first a little higher because if you shift at redline, and you are slow, it will fall out of the high lift cam.
