Is a game progress save to usb/flash drive (PS3 gsme save utility) enough to cover you in the event of ylod? Some talk of having to have an entire system backed up? I would have thought as long as you can load your game save data onto a new ps3 your GT5 progress would/could be restored to new system
Yes you can use the "backup utility" under system setting on the XMB to backup all data on the HDD.

Yes you can backup just the GT5 game saved data file to USB stick and load said file onto any PS3, but it would have to used under the exact PSN it was saved from (which is a no-brainer).

I think the OP's issue is he didn't have a backup of his game saved data (or he wouldn't be mad in the first place), which is a little careless since they "unlocked" that feature just for this reason.

Excellent! thanks for putting my mind at rest. To the OP - really sorry for you. Unless you can get around the encryption then it looks to be near impossible to get the data off the unit. Only option is to let sony repair rather than replace the unit and ask that they do not wipe the hdd.

If I remember correctly, save games cannot simply be used by anyone on any system. The saves are tied to a particular user on a particular system. As such, in order to be able to use a save game, you need to retain that user on that system. Please anyone correct me if this is wrong.

A game save on a USB can be used on another PS3 that you have your PSN ID on.
They are tied to the PSN ID not the PS3.

It will not be worthless if they send you back your original PS3. Each PS3 has a key encryption tied to each HDD (hence the data only be accessible by your original). As far as I am aware, your HDD should be in tact when placing it back in your PS3.

Now, saying that, I have no idea of Sony's policy on repairing/replacing PS3 and/or the chance of you receiving yours back.

I believe with the fat PS3s, Sony just sends you a refurbished system. My PS3 bricked a month ago and I contemplated sending it back to Sony because I was afraid I would mess up applying the thermal compound. Glad I decided against sending it in because it was an easy do-it-yourself fix.

You will be sent a refurb and your HDD will be reformated when you insert it in.

This is one thing I'm for when it comes to jailbreaking. As I believe it frees you from being tied to one HDD without having to reformat

FWIW a full system backup is fairly easy and doesn't require a lot of memory as there is some file compression occurring during the process. I went out and bought a 500GB drive to backup my 500GB PS3 (200GB in use) and the backup file only ended up being something like 90GB :dunce:
