Patch 1.60 is now live, with DLC "coldfront" confirmed for a December 17th release!

Have to say SOCOM has been gathering dust since OFP2 and MW2 have been released but I enjoyed it greatly yesterday and am wondering why I stoped playing it :)

Community is still going strong as are the sublime maps which are now nearing the point of being doubled with the coldfront DLC

Theres a few changes been made in the patch one of which is the increased levels of darkness on night maps.....really mixes things up making sniping quite literaly a futile option.

I've started this new thread for the coldfront DLC as it basicly is a game in itself, hope a few of you go dust of your copies and get back into it, allways was a great game and is about to get even better.

Currentlt SOCOM is priced at £14.99 on the PSN Store and the Coldfront DLC is priced at $9.99 (until the 20th) .....(sorry no UK / EU price yet)
1.60 patch has already given players 6 new weapons, 2 new factions (Dutch and Italian specialforces) along with new camo, faces, armour ect ect. This is set to double with 5 new maps set in northern europe and a raft of new weapons, attachments, camo and factions, some of which can be seen on the game including a thermal scope.........loads of videos of the new maps (a number of which are classics from earlier SOCOM games)

Sounds good, although I just don't play Socom enough to make the DLC worth a buy. Free stuff however, is good stuff.

Tried the patch... still don't want the DLC. False advertisement! It didn't really feel much different to me but I have a worry, if thermal scopes are available in all rooms, will they be overpowered and make anyone without it at a disadvantage when trying to hide? Especially at night. Again, I'm still not playing Socom enough to warrant buying anything for it. On the other hand, I'm still having enough fun that no amount of DLC, particular as some of them are maps I already know, is going to massively enhance my experience. Perhaps I will consider after Xmas if I have cash to burn, but I'm trying to buy a Wheel Stand Pro and then another game so I'm thinking cash will be tight.

I just don't really see the big pull with maps as content, I don't see how being in a different place will be any different long term. Sure at first there's the wow factor, and the lack of knowledge, but in the end does it really make that big a difference? It certainly didn't on old Socoms, being on the snow maps didn't make the game very different at all if at all. I'd have to really, REALLY like a game to buy just map DLC, and so far I've not bought a single map add on for any title. Infact I've not bought an add-on full stop, although I would consider campaign add ons as they add more to the story and can be set very differently without changing the core gameplay mechanics, whereas in online multiplayer in particular, a new map is just a new place for the same old things to kill you and to kill in the same way you always have. At least this is how I see it, if I really really liked Socom and played it like I have some other titles, I would certainly go for this, but as it stands it's a pass from me.

I think given the original budget price of SOCOM and the fact I still enjoy playing it after nearly a year the DLC is a worthwhile purchase. SOCOM is it's maps. there an integral part of hoow the game feels and plays, adding more simply freshenss the game up. There are of course new game modes in the DLC which I'll dig some info up and post about.

To be honest though I think there were only 3 of us on this forum who activly played the game for any great amount of time. Plus the release date for the DLC is the same as that of the GT5 time trial demo.........enough said LOL

I might have to give this another try with the new update. I used to always get kicked from the room and the game would hang. was really unplayable. I'll have to give this a try and see if things really have improved.

The patch improvements from 1.5 onwards have been really good, everything works much better.

New game modes Here? Now I'm interested more, sorry if I missed that when I wrote my original, but look at the time of it and you'll understand :)

All told, this pack will have:
New Russian / Eastern European Area of Operation
Snow setting complete with snow effects, new snow gear and camo for both the Special Forces and Mercenaries, and thermal vision
New ARMS RUN gameplay mode
5 New Maps: Uprising, Entrapment, Blizzard, Night Stalker, Vigilance
All new mercenaries characters with new looks and new VO.
New Special Forces squad, the Russian Spetsnaz
Gun turrets emplacements
New music
All new character specialization/progression system
Allows players to pick a primary and secondary specialization and unlock new equipment exclusive to those specializations
New weapons, including: 3 new weapons, 6 enhanced versions of weapons available as part of the new weapons specialization system, 2 new weapon attachments (including the thermal scope), 5 enhanced versions of weapon attachments also available as part of the new weapons specialization system.
2 new grenade launcher ammo types (flash and smoke)
New Trophies

So a character progresion system, character specialisation, unlockable equipment.......looks to shake things up quite a bit?

All this enhanced weapons stuff is really putting me off, I feel like I'm going to get owned by people who have the DLC if I don't.

Not sure how it's going to work to be honest, at the moment you can see stuff like the thermal scope in the loadout screnn but it's greyed out with a PSN store logo next to it so obviously without the DLC you can't have it, but maybe there will be specific loadout restrictions on certain game modes that are for non DLC users, ie the game restricts your loadout automaticaly as it dose with breach games now. What could happen if there not careful is as you say, unbalanced games where those with the DLC have a greater advantage, or they could end up spliting the comunity into two halves which would be a bad thing. They do however need to intergrate in some way the new kit and skills into the old maps or you in effect end up with 2 games.
I'm interested t see how these "skill sets" will be implimented, I'm asuming they work like the ones in call of duty but as to what advantages they give and what equipment they unlock is a mystery to everyone bar /6 How they will be awarded is also a mystery?

Am I missing something? I can't find it in the EU store, is it only available in the US Store or is it just not out at all. That or do I need to go on Socom itself?

Out in Europe The 7th of January...

Question though:
If I could get the password of an American buddy of mine who's got the dlc
and log on to it on my ps3, then download the DLC again from his account from the US store onto my ps3,
and after finishing that process, log on to my account, will I be able to play it then?
Would I have to pay for it for redownloading it, or will it be free btw.

simple awnser.....I don't know?

The release of coldfront is a little bit of a sore subject with EU players at the moment as Slant 6 basicly just couldn't be botherd, either to release it in the EU on the 17th (as they did in the US) or even to tell us prior to release that we wouldn't be getting it! I supose the only upside of this is the US market get to beta test it before we get it......as was the case with the original. As far as customer suport goes Slant 6 needs to take half an hour and try comunicating with the comunity on there official forums, I don't normaly whinge about such things but this really did anger me and the majority of EU SOCOM players.

The new maps(2 of the maps are new the other 3 are old socom maps) are great. There is one I haven't played yet, but the other 4 really add to the game. One really stupid thing they did is that you can't get into a room that uses all the maps. You either get into a coldfront room or confrontation room. I really son't understand why they would do that, hopefully they will add some more medleys to play in that contain all the maps.

The new game mode is pretty nice to. There are 3 rocket launchers placed in the map. One team tries to activate and launch the rockets while the other team tries to destroy the launchers. It sounds like a control pints style game, but something about it makes it different.

My socom will certainly start seeing some more playing time, and hopefully I can get in a few games with you guys. Hopefully they keep supporting this game and we can start seeing more DLC every few months. They should really start advertising again for it, because the game is really just now how it should have been when it was released. If I were \6, I would try and get ign and game informer to review the game again. The original scores were horrible, and really the game deserved that. It was literally unplayable for the first month or so and that is when they reviewed it. \

Anyway, the DLC is worth the purchase if you want to get back into socom. I haven't got booted, or had a game freeze since I started playing again.

Cheers for that Bevo......I really wanted to know what I was missing LOL
Hows the thermal scope working out? dose it unbalance the games or have they kept everything as well balanced as before?
