Manchester United favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has retired due to a knee injury, according to Sky Sports News.

Solskjaer will be forever remembered in United folklore for scoring the dramatic winner in the UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999.

That goal was one of almost 130 he scored for The Red Devils after joining from Molde in a £1.5million transfer 11 years ago.

He made over 360 appearances for the club, but recent seasons have been blighted by injury.

The 34-year-old did maintain a level of fitness last season, scoring 11 goals as United won the title and reached the FA Cup final.

But he did not figure during the pre-season campaign after undergoing a knee operation over the summer.

This was expected to be his final season as a player at Old Trafford, but he has now decided to announce his retirement.

Solskjaer's decision to quit could prompt Sir Alex Ferguson to rethink his attacking options prior to the close of the transfer window.

Along with Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Louis Saha, Solskjaer was expected to form part of Ferguson's plans up front.

But the United manager may now require further reinforcements in attack, having been linked with Bolton Wanderers' forward Nicolas Anelka.

That sucks. Although, I pretty much expected that in the next couple of years with all of the never-ending injury problems he had.

But, as I said, that sucks.

Shame to see him go, especially like this, never like to see a players career cut short through injury whether they're young (such as Ipswich's Gerrard Nash...17 and knee injury caused him to cut short what would've been a great career) or experienced (such as Ole)

Ditto to most of the comments, it's sad to see him leave but he's had a good time at Man Utd and I'm sure he can retire feeling fully content with his achievements.

On another note, the link to Anelka is interesting but I'm sure Boltons form will pick up which may rule that move out.

I think this decision will force Fergie to buy a new striker, if not this week, which seems too short notice, then in January.

Ole was a fantastic member of the team, with firm emphasis on "team". He was a legend on the pitch and a role model off it. His career at Man U is not over though, he is set to be offered a coaching role and to be made an ambassador for the club.

And who will forget that injury time winner he scored in the Champions league final, or when he came on as a 70th min sub against Nottingham and scored 4. Even last season he maintained his average of just over 1 goal every 3 appearences scoring 11 goals in 30. It's a pity he picked up that knee injury in 2003, it didn't prevent him being a great player, but his knee never fully recovered and has been injury prone since.

Thats the sad thing about injurys some players will come back stronger, on the other hand it could 'cripple' some players and there careers.
Big shame.
Although i am not a Man. United fan i always remember staying up late to watch that final.
And yes, i did celebrate the goals.
