I have a new 80GB PS3 with two DS3 controllers. The one that came with it, and a second one.

I charged the first one, and it assigned itself as controller 1.
Then I charged the second one, and it assigned itself as controller 2.
Then I recharged the first one, and it assigned itself as controller 3.

Now whenever I power the system on, the first controller always assigns itself as controller 3. I can hold down the PS button, reassign the controller, and go back into the game, but frankly that's a bit of a PITA.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Reset the controller that is causing the problem, you will find a small 'reset' button on the bottom of the controller. Use a cocktail stick or similar to push it in, once done re-synch the controller and fingers crossed it should sort you out.

BTW feel free to add me to you friends list.

Do you turn on your PS3 with a controller or the console button? Any USB devices plug in to it? Wheels, other controllers etc?
I think like Scaff have mentioned it, Press RESET button on the back of the controller.

When you charge controller, it automatically turns on and sets to 2nd or 3rd slot? Or are you pressing the PS button when you plug it in to charge it?

OK, I'll try this, thanks! I'll also add you to my friends list. Do you mean PSN, or GTP, or both, by the way?

Usually the PS button, but sometimes the console button.

I have a receiver for the wireless Buzz buzzers.

I usually charge one or other of the controllers when the PS3 is showing a DVD, so I just find the USB cable and plug in whichever controller's nearest. I've noted all the lights flashing on the controller, but not one individually.

Unplug, turn of BUZZ buzzers that might be the problem...
When all lights are flashing means that it is charging and controller is off. So that is good.
So yeah just unplug or turn off that buzz buzzer thingy and it might be fixed. Same thing happens when I have my G25 plug in, then turn on Controller controller is on spot 2.

If it's plugged in when you're trying to turn on Controller #1, that would be your problem. Unplug it when not in use or assign it to controller 3 (or higher), and assign #1 to controller 1

Both 👍

If you leave the Buzz receiver plugged in, as has already been mentioned, that will be the problem.

It uses slot 1 by default, I always take mine out.

Now I know you have Buzz we will have to try and sort out a Sofa vs Sofa match sometime.

I removed the Buzz receiver, started the PS3, and Controller 1 took ID 1.

Perfect. Thanks guys!
