I am a little bit confused. I will be buying the PAL version on friday, so will i be required to download this update mentioned in the update thread? Or is that for NTSC users? If i do need to download it, i hardly think that it is fair having to download an update as soon as you buy it, especially since i have no way of connecting my PS3 to the net as far as i can tell!!

Anyone shed some light on this?

Anyway while i am on the subject, how am i supposed to connect my PS3 to the net since my only internet source is my PC through a router to the phoneline?

I cant work out what the ethernet cable is supposed to do and i dont have wireless!

I assume you take the cable out of the back of the PC, and plug it into the PS3.

EDIT: Use the one that says LAN

Does PS3 need special network adapter settings, for example if you use internet not as bridge, but as PPoE(dsl) with firmly settings applyed to the network adapter?
I mean can you set TCP/IPv4 parameters in PS3's net. adapter? I have it that way configured on my PC.

Yes.

💡

i tried the simple things when i first got my ps3 but no joy :(

By this light bulb above the head i guess you have an idea, but its not clicking with me, please help if you can?

Are you suggesting i buy a router for my ps3? Also will i need this update?

Even if i dont it still anoys me that other games will use this method, like ferrari challenge and others! Why wont they allow us to download to a storage device like the system updates? i am guessing in-case we download corrupt files and hold them responsible.

How is your setup done is it like this

Wall socket ------ modem ----- router ------- PC
..................................................\
..................................................PS3

If it is then the router might be your problem. I get broadband through cable and I have to unplug the cable that first connects into the router and plug that into the PS3 so it just looks like this...

Wall--------modem-----PS3

and that works, but if I send the connection through the router it doesn't work, I can't set it up through the router I have.

In the last case you can also use(if you have 2 on your mobo), or buy another network adapter(PCI) and connect it with your PC primary network adapter(it's called bridging I think) and use the second adapter for the PS3 this way you have internet on both of machines.

my internet setup is basically-

wall socket>>>>>Router>>>>>>PC

Maybe tomorrow i will try and connect by plugging the phone cable direct to the PS3, but i can't see this working at all.

The only other thing i can think of is buying a compatible router and configuring it myself somehow. Thanks for help so far, but does anyone else have a better idea? There must be people in the same situation as me.

make sure you turn your modem off for 10secs and then back on again to reset it for the PS3

it's something you need to do when you plug your cable into a new PC or network card. Same applies for the PS3
Otherwise the modem won't recognise the PS3

ok the fact that i will need this update to turn off ABS is making me quite annoyed

i cant believe that the only way i will be able to update is by hooking my ps3 to the net somehow, even after paying for my copy of the game! It was enough that the UK PAL would be missing the tuner RX7, but now there is an update that it seems i wont be able to access.

Isnt it possible to download updates to a USB-Device and then take it to your PS3 to update from that device ?

If it is like that its really bad. Its not like Computer updates can be handled..

So maybe you could take your PS3 to a friend to get the update from his internet connection ?

But i think that if you have got internet connection already at home its just a config thing to get your PS3 online isnt it ?

Is it broadband connection ? What type of router ?

Yeah, if you can tell what kinda connection it really is maybe someone can help. (as in, what do you do, say for egs. you format your pc and re-install everything, how do you start your internet connection? do you goto the networks tab in tcp/ip, or do you use pppoe settings? is your ip static?, sorry i use a mac so may be i wont be of much help, lol, but i am sure if you elaborate on ur network options, someone here would be able to help you connect ur ps3 online)

You need the update to play on line dude.

And as sheruken more info would lead to a quicker solution to your problem.

The thing is the PS3 is pretty user friendly.
All I did with mine was turn everything off plugged Ethernet cable into 4 port router(which is just PnP) and other end into PS3. Turned all back on. Went to the XMB on the PS3 Network settings let it do it all automatically. And away you go.

Mines like..

Wallsocket------> Router------>PC
Wallsocket------> Router------>Laptop
Wallsocket------> Router------>XBOX360
Wallsocket------> Router------>PS3
Wallsocket------> Router------>HP Printer

Only 1 wall socket and router, but all those devices on it.

All on the net at same time through a router.

Hooking your ps3 to the net is a good thing! You can stream movies, music that are on your pc, play Gran Turismo online and get updates, I don't see why you wouldn't like that.

I won't work you need a router.

You dont need a router at all. Router is only needed if you want multiple networked items on at once.

By plugging a cable directly into the PS3 from your modem will work just fine.

If you simply do a search online you can get all the info you need to hook up to the internet, either through your PC, via a router or switch or directly into your modem. Without any info of your network and internet setup we could be here a long time. Basicly stick the cable in the back hook it to your router, turn EVERYTHING off then turn it back on again, goto internet conection on the PS3 XMB and select automatic config....the nice black box will do the rest, if there is a problem the PS3 will tell you what the problem is (It's nice like that) if a google search isn't helpful with the problem then post the problem here. Going online with the PS3 opens up the system and really lets it do what it was desighned to do. Updates and the like are available to download onto your PC and then be transfared via a USB stick/thumb drive if you don't want to hook the PS3 up. For those who can't physicaly run a wire to there PS3 then the built in wireless adapter can give you a wireless connection very easily with the addition of a wireless router on your network, all cheap and readily available at most if not all PC outlets.......You don't need Sony routers, Cheap PC ones will do just check the specs needed on the sony website.

All fine and good if your PS3 is at a different end of the house [/sarcasm] As such, I bought a router today, yet to connect it.

its not that i dont want it to be connected i would love it to be, its just difficult because its a looong way from the phone socket

i am happy to download to a flash drivethe ps3 updates so it confuses me why they dont allow this option with game updates!

anyway, the problem i have is now clear, my sister is the one who pays for our internet and she chose talktalk(UK) and they sent us this crappy router with only one plug for the phone line and one for the usb to connect to PC, so theres no way of plugging my PS3 into it.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to simply unplug the USB from the PC and then connect it to the USB on my PS3? Or would it not be compatible as a usb device with my ps3?

Failing this, maybe there is a router i can buy to replace this crappy one, its just a case of finding one that has more than 2 connections and is compatible with my isp.

Thanks for all your help people.

Heres my crappy router...any ideas? Please send on a post card :)

It even says on their website its only for a single PC. Looks like the router has to go. Now i am wondering, will i need the router to be connected to the PC for my PS3 to use it.

yea thanks only problem is i have been doing some searches and seems there has been some issues with talk talk accepting other routers so i think ill have to wait and see.

ignore the idea on the last page about plugging it into the usb, i now realise that the usb is merely a power supple and the actual data goes through just the adsl cable

looks like i need to either find a cheap router with a seperate ethernet port or go wireless

A freind of mine is on talk talk. he brought a 4 port wireless router from Tesco I think. That works fine. It's a little late for me to call him to be certain that's where he got it.

thanks alot mate its funny you said that actually because i was just thinking i bet i can get a basic replacement at tescos! im gonna go have a look on monday! thanks for your help.

No problems. But you might want to have a word with your sis about changing providers.

Have a read of THIS bud

oh man wonder what areas they live in

i knew they were bad anyway its pretty hard to find a good isp, but dont think my sister will listen she just takes what seems to be the simplest option, and she still wont listen.

we experience random kickouts sometimes but not as much as some of them unlucky people. I wont worry myself too much about it though, i just use them to come on here, send emails and download stuff now and then. If it ever evolves that i use the net alot more while living here then i would almost definately change isp, with or without her knowing.
