See this site has one thing that just bugs me so much. Why point out people grammatical typing errors? Just read it and say what you think that what I thought this was what this site was all about. Listens to people's opinions and say what you think of what they said. Instead of point out there problem telling them how to do it right and telling them there a dumbass, and bag on them in all your posts.

Bryce, this is the first post you've done where you use periods throughout. Trying to read one of your broken-English posts is like listening to someone who is struggling with the language...eventually you tune out. If you want to be heard and understood and respected, you have to post in a coherent, repsectable manner. Them's the rules, I didn't write 'em but I sure follow them!

I understand that but why bag on them and tell them thye need to do it like this or they have to type it like this. Im not the greatest typer I'll admit that but why mess with people?

Well, you see, I've always thought of the internet, mainly message boards, as an essay exam or a job interview. Do I judge people on how they type? YES. Frankly, some people, who shall remain unnamed, type at a 1st grade level. Whether this is lazyness or a general lack of language skills, no one really knows. Point being, if you want to look halfway smart and want people to take you seriously, type better. I rarely read any posts that have horrible punctuation and sentence structure; it's almost hard for me to read what some people type.

It's sad, really. It's one thing if you are instant messaging someone, but when you are posting on a world-wide site, atleast attempt to look like you know what you're doing. Please.

When I type on like GTP I dont really think of spell checking them. When I'm writing a essay or exam or whatever invloving school or work. I dont really think of going over them again cause if you get the point you dont have to be perfect.

Yep. The better you type, the easier it is for the reader, sortof how a book goes.

I really understand that but when you don't take into consideration of what they said and just point out there mistakes. What's the point?

You see, if I ever get quoted, I don't want spelling or grammar errors to be included. Simple as that. You don't type as bad as some people. The people I really hate are the ones that can't spell out a complete word, so they shorten everything. Then you get a post like "i no that i typ bad but i cant b botherd 2 lern how 2 typ proprly" That pisses me off. Complete lack of brain.

Also, since I judge people online according to thier typing style, if you don't strive to add grammatical characteristics, you merely blend in with the masses. I suggest using key words that no one else uses. Type in an interesting manner. Have fun with sentence structure while still using good grammar. Do I like writing? Hell no. Writing sucks. Typing is different. My handwriting is horrendous, and even if I write a good paper, the teacher will just hate reading it. If I type something, it's better. Plus typing takes very little time, even though I peck. I peck rapidly, without looking at the keyboard. Memorizing key placement is of utmost importance.

Very good point I will think about that when I'm typing my next post.

The point is you can't take what they said into consideration when you don't understand a word they say.

When I was like nine I would only use my two index fingers, and I would always say that was faster, but when I learned how to type correctly and memorized the keyboard I was ten time better. I really just dont think about it when just messing around on the internet.

When I was first starting on GTP I would make small little things like no periods . Which you can still read without them you dont die from not seeing a little dot im sorry.

you dont die from not seeing a little dot im sorry.

Actually, there have been numerous cases of people going mentally awry and killing themselves from reading multiple punctuation lacking posts on GTP.

Well maybe not, but it is usually easier to read posts with punctuation.

If you don't take the time put together a sentence or paragraph, then why should I read it.

That's how you should see it.

edit: Sorry for the typos or errors, however you view them, I was in a hurry to get to school on time.

Precisely. If the user is too lazy to put his own thoughts into something coherent and readable, how dare he assume that we should bother to do it for him? That shows arrogance and immaturity - two things everybody seems to agree suck. Well, everybody except for arrogant immature people. But for most of us, our time is valuable to us and we are not happy about wasting it deciphering some crappy txt msg post full of AOL-speak.

The other point is that this forum is very international in makeup. Many users do not speak English natively. Out of respect for them, it is important to use the best English you can. I know if I was trying to post on a Spanish or German board, I would have a hard enough time understanding textbook posts, let alone those full of slang and horrible grammar.

neon_duke and MazKid summed that all up nicely. When I started out on GTP, I didn't use grammar either, the only things I use were Full Stops and Commas. But then, a week or so later, I would go back and read my post, and I realised what a horrible mess it was. You just can't read it properly. Sure, it makes sense to YOU, because you know what you are trying to say. But put your foot in the other people's shoes, and it's a little different.

You can get away with not using apostrophes, and missing some capital letters. But, not using simple things like full stops and commas makes it EXTREMELY hard to read. It also gives people the impression you are just another Newbie, like the rest of them. You don't have character.

Now like it or not, this is the truth. Yes, all because you didn't use proper grammar. I'll admit, I don't use grammar on MSN, but that's because I'm typing quick. On GTP, you don't have to type quick.

Capish?

Hello.
My name is Jordan, and I used to not use apostrophes.
I had decent spelling, and my grammar was at least readable. But I just did not use apostrophes, seemed a waste of my (valuable :) ) time.

Then one day I ventured into the Drifting forum here at GTP. There I saw things that I dare not repeat here, but needless to say I'm a changed person because of it.

My advice to anyone who thinks it is above them to spell out complete words or use correct punctuation, just please spend a few minutes of your day in the Drifting section of this website. Do YOU want to end up like that?

This is an excellent thread. 👍

I concur.

In addition to the excellent points made by neon_duke, MazKid, et al, the fact is these and all the forums many of us frequent, are text based.

Since we lack the abilty on the forums to "hear" tone and inflection or to "see" facial expressions or gestures (emoticons aside), what you type is everything!

As has been pointed out, one's credibility when posting a response, whether an opinion or a fact, is greatly affected by how you present the information.

Folks can and should look at good posting habits as an opportunity to improve communication skills.

I always have poor grammar and punctuation because I am bad at English, or language, as it is called in school.
Places like this are great to learn a thing or two. Pay attention, take your time and take advantage of it.

True. I remember that and I can tell you that it made all the difference.

It is always preferrable to others that one is as grammatically accurate as he possibly can. If someone rudely criticises you as opposed to constructively doing so, keep those whom are respectful toward you in your mind as you are formulating your typing. Some critics merely want respectable standards and are fair, while others think school yard rules apply here; berating others. It is the latter you would be wise not to associate with too much, or at all if possible.

I don't know my English rules to start with. I don't really know where to put in commas, apostrophes, semicolons, and all of the other symbols of the English language, even though I live in America and write in English every day.

The thing I don't know is what is the right placing for a symbol or the wrong placing. You don't have to explain this by the way, I am just stating a fact.

There's also another important reason for good spelling and grammar: Search Engines!

You're looking for the perfect Nissan Skyline settings, except everyone has spelled it "syklne", "skilyne", or "SkY LiNe", so you have no hope of finding the information you were looking for because nobody spelled it right. Of course, we all make spelling errors here and there, but when you mis-spell words on purpose, it makes your posts seem worthless.

Also, if you're looking for advice, you'd rather take it from someone who can construct a sentence properly, for clarity and readability, than from someone who butchers their own language to verbal debris. People who's first language is other than English actually do a great job of posting intelligent, well-constructed sentences.
