Something to consider before getting into GT6

In GT5 a news item has just been given that makes it clear that sometime in the future there will no longer be Seasonal Events in that game. The exact wording:

"Please note that the actual "Seasonal Events" service for Gran Turismo 5 on PlayStation3 will continue even after 25 December 2013. We will communicate at a later stage the date of the termination of the service." (Italics mine.)

Ok, I can see no further new seasonal events, but taking them out altogether? This IMHO would severely cripple GT5. Seasonals are a great challenge and above all the best way of making cash, and doing so without tedious grinding.

So, no problem. For $60 I'm getting GT6. Just consider. If they pull the same plug on GT6 whenever GT7 comes out, crippling GT6, buying GT7 will involve shelling out, what?, $400+ for PS4? Maybe you'd be doing that anyway, but I hate being forced. And slipping in this little item on the exact eve of the release of GT6 is a bit like scare tactics.

Something to think about.

You aren't being forced to do anything. Its your choice to buy the PS4 for GT7. Almost all games shut down their online part of their game when a new version of the game anyway. Theres nothing unusual about that.

I thought it said that the notification was being stopped on gran-turismo.com? No matter what way you look at it GT5 is out 3 years. 3 well supported years. How long should they continue updating it? Virtually no console game has such long support and you cannot be surprised that this happening.

If Seasonal Events had stopped a year ago I would not have been shocked and purchasing GT6, or eventually GT7 on PS4, is not something you are being forced to do.

So, GT6 won't - to quote Georg Friedrich Händel - "reign for ever and ever".

But GT7 is not even on the horizon yet. It's probably not the best time to pick up a copy of GT5, but GT6 will last for at least a few years. And even when the online services eventually are being terminated, you still have the offline mode.

Never said there was anything unusual about it. Unfortunately it's all very typical Market Place tactics, executed with perfect (if a bit obviously heavy-handed) timing.

According to this guy, it isn't.

What exactly is that Italian retailer saying, and what's their source?

What do you expect? I mean just like 5 Prologue, all services stop sooner or later no?

The loss of the seasonal events isn't that big of a deal to me personally, I think the big one will be when they pull the plug on online multiplayer. I do hope for the museum cards they will just unlock all of them since they require online services to acquire.

How long multiplayer service continues varies on the video game title, some very well known franchises still have all of their multiplayer servers still up despite being close to or even older than a decade in age, for example I think all of the games in the Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Half-Life franchises still have their server services available as of late 2013. For other games, online service can be the equivalent of a blink of an eye, the most extreme examples being EA sports games. As seen with GT5 Prologue, I expect mutliplayer service to survive possibly a year or two longer, but seeing as how PD has discontinued certain GT5 services before GT6 has even released, I feel the online multiplayer life span for GT5 might be shorter than I predicted.

I do think the OP's concern is legitimate if the rumors are true and GT6 is basically a stop gap for GT7 which may release as early as next year, considering GT7 is likely to be on PS4 and will require additional investment.

As written in PD note I've noticed yesterday I understand that seasonal events will still be in the game , but there will be no new events and there will be no "news" on the intro screen ,but you'll have to search for them through "campaign" menus.Iit is a standard note issued everytime new iteration of game comes out > NFS series , COD .... Service will of course be terminated at some point (servers do cost money) but I don't think It will be that soon - tba> 6months,year,2 years? - depends on GT6 sucess and how many people will still play GT5 :D
