Sony STR K660P(Receiver) - 6 years and running like new. Still sounds awesome also.
Sony Wega CRT HD-Ready - 4 years old and has a little dis-colorization in the top right of the screen but works fine.
Sony PS2 - 8 years old and still works to this day.
Sony PS3 - 3 years old and still works even though I have never cleaned the console.

I disagree with the rumored "TIMER" as how would Sony be able to cause a computer to crash?

My only Sony products are my PS2 and PS3. My fattie PS2 is from the initial launch day back in what was it '99 or '00? I modded 'fixed' my PS2 and it works great. My 60GB PS3 hasn't had any issues besides it requiring me to enter in both the primary and secondary dns IP's on my gigabit network :D Plus, I've never heard of this Sony time bomb thing before so its not THAT well known (but may be if I had more Sony stuff).

Vaio desktop - 7 years old
Portable DVD player - 3 years old
PS3 - 3 years old in June
PSP - 2 years old
Alarm clock radio - I can't even remember when I got the thing as a gift.

All still work.

And my PSX and PS2 both worked until I sold them as I upgraded. I also had a Sony aftermarket car stereo/CD player and 4 speakers that worked until I sold the car.

Although not being the best sounding headphones, it served me for around a decade. Other than the ear pad cover starting to shred, they were indestructible. Until I snapped the thing in half in my Modern Warfare 2 rage. loser I use the SONY V6 now, and it is awesome. Paid only $65 on Amazon. I recommend upgrading. Night & day difference in sound quality.

$65 off Amazon you say?

Interesting. . .

On another note, having sold more of these bloody things than I care to remember, Sony's Cybershot cameras are TERRIBLE.

Ditto, for that matter, my wife's 28-year-old Sony clock/radio.

My dad has a Sony alarm clock he's had since well before i was born (So at least 19-20 years). He also has a Sony CD player (Walkman?) That must be around 15-20 years old.

I've never had any problems with Sony products, because aside from my PSX, PS2, PSP and my brother's PS3, we don't have any Sony products because they are usually quite expensive. Oh wait no, my Sister has a Viao laptop that breaks all the time, but i would put that down to the fact she doesn't maintain it properly.

i have 7 year old Sony DJ headphones, a 5-6 year old 32" Sony SDTV i use for my SNES, Sony Home theater receiver my dad gave me but we had since the early 90's, a Sony tape deck also from the early 90's, an Old vaio Laptop, a PS1, PS2, 2 fat PSP's and a PS3 all goin strong.

This "myth" is BS, how can an entire nation of people really believe such non-sense? I think Sony make top notch products and that is why i will continue to purchase them.

I have a sony vaio from 2000 and it is the 2nd fastest computer at my house (next to mine, followed by my dads dell, my moms brandnew macbook pro >:D, and last my little brothers vaio ). It does have a cracked screen and half the keys missing due to soda spilt on the keyboard and ripping them off due to them sticking down. Total HDD is 40gigs. Now my little brothers vaio which is from 2007 is retarded slow, it was OK before switching to vista but now its unusable and needs to be checked by me once a week.

I've got a launch PS2 that works like clockwork. Of course, I also have 2 broken PSXs that both lasted about a year each.

So am I the only one that has a bunch of tiny Ninjas come in and destroy their Sony products? I try to follow them afterwards but can never catch them. I think they may be related to the underpants gnomes.

On Topic: From my experiences Sony products have all outlasted any other brand of electronics I've had. Really except on PS2(which had the disc drive go out due to GT4) none of them pre-maturely died.

I bought 2 original Walkmans (cassette tape) when I was in Japan in 1980. This was one year before they were introduced here in the States. Sold one when I returned and still have the other which functions perfectly after nearly 30 years.

My original PS1 still works. My first PS2 died but I didn't grieve as I used it 12 hours a day for years and travelled the world with it.

I won a free 36" Trinitron in a sales contest in 1996 and just sold it for $75, working perfectly, about a month ago.

My Sony surround sound and headphones still work perfectly.

My Sony Mini-Disk still works perfectly although I never use it for obvious reasons. (10 years old)

I love (contrary to one commentor) my 10.1 Mb Cybershot and think it's touch screen intuitive menu is second to none.

I love my Sony HD Video camera as much as my Vaio laptop. I got the Vaio so that I could edit the HD video I was shooting and using it's Bluray drive to burn Bluray disks.

10 years ago, I got a 52" rear projection unit that did have a problem. Sony was very easy to deal with even after the unit was out of warranty and they replaced the circuit board for free, with me paying the house call labor of $80.

My 60Gb PS3 died after a couple years and the $150 replacement has been holding up fine.

All this being said, I have come to find that Sony's customer service in recent times is abominable. Try getting a straight answer from them about the "Failed to Connect to Host" (or any answer /response at all). Their complete lack of regard for loyal customers finally pushed me over the edge and consequently I am now the proud owner of 2 Samsung LCD's which are awesome. I have a 2 year old 60Hz 46" and a newer 240Hz 52" unit. As much as I have loved Sony and as much as I have supported them, they simply lost my TV business because of their attitude :)

You know whats funny? I read not too long ago that the reason for PS2's disk drive failure was because of the Mounting screws holding it in place! Apparently the vibrations caused these screws to loosen up, and because somehow the functionality of the drive depended on these screws being secure, the drives eventually stopped working. I read if you were to open your PS2 and fasten the screws, it would fix the disk read error problem!

Pretty much all our tech is Sony and has been for many years. So far, we have never had to bring any of it for repair. There is just this time long ago in my childhood that we had to repair the Sony CRT TV. However, it had to do with me experimenting... what will happen if you attach a giant magnet to the screen. 💡 :)

Sony PS2, uhhh 6-7 years old, still works

Sony PS3, broke after 3 months, second one has worked since

Well my ex-g/f is Japanese, I wish that had a "Sony kill switch" on it.. lol
That's ..... cruel, dirty thing to say, don't you think? Even as it was meant as a joke. But if you read between the lines, some part of you means it.

The irony: I've been reading this thread on a 4 y.o 19 inch Sony LCD monitor. It has a on/off switch but not a kill switch. Funny huh!

It all sounds exactly the same as taking your driving permit (is this correct?) here in Belgium. Years ago, 9 out of 10 failed the first time because they didn't earn enough money on you (again, is this correct? => earn enough money on you).

It seems that all the instructors had a kill switch. The second time, most people had an instructior that function properly, a kill switch free instructor. :p

Hmm, the Sony kill switch eh! Everything old that I have thats made by Sony has never broken but all the new stuff I have purchased broke conveniently within a year or so.

My 2 original JPN PS2's have never skipped a beat all these years, btw only the early PS2's made for countries other than JPN (which came out a year later) were unreliable. Other stuff like the first cybershot I have still work great.

In contrast my PS3 broke after very little use only a few months out of warranty and my newer cybershot I bought around the same time broke days before the warranty ran out so I quickly sent it in to get fixed.

Ever since those experiences I dropped Sony and havent bought anything from them since. In my eyes they really have gone down the drain in reliability.

Robin.

I have 2 PS2s, one was bought new in the first year of production, the other was bought second-hand due to the first one's eventual inability to read blue-back PS2 games. Both work just fine, although the first is nearing the end of its life due to constant use/wear and tear. Warranty's long been expired, though.

All fat PS3's connected to PSN, are now most likely... um... 'kaput'.

Notice how the slim models were not affected.

This is no less than full confirmation people, this myth is true :sly:

Mine is still running fine and it's a original 60GB that has 320GB HDD. I plan on cleaning the vents today because it is long overdue for 2-3 years now. The one thing that kills machines is dust and that dust acts as an insulator. The dust adds weight on the fans making them louder and the machine will get hotter.

Mine is also still running fine - date hasn't reset says March 1st. But I'm guessing it might just suddenly go wrong right? Or if it's saying March 1st then the glitch hasn't happened so it's fine?

Mine's a launch console by the way.

It's a PSN issue, not a ps3 issue. Mine works fine apart from not being able to connect to PSN.

Thats what they want you to think :sly:

Its a problem with the internal clock in the PS3. A 'bug', possibly to do with Leap Years being programmed in wrongly. PSN is fine, hence why slim users can still play online.

Well it's fixed for everyone now so that doesn't matter anymore. I bet they pulled this stunt to ease the God of War Demo traffic.

While I don't believe the myth, I would say it's possibly a cheeky/opportunist way to remove the OtherOS feature from the fats. There are strong rumours that Sony want to remove the option, found only on the fat, because of the recent hacks by that iPhone child.

Installing Linux was a major factor for purchase for a lot of people. I do wonder if a mandatory update is offered to resolve the current problems, will it come with an added condition of the removal of OtherOS? Those particularly fond of Linux can keep their consoles offline to overcome forced updates, but if the console simply isn't working (as per this current bug), the update becomes necessary.

I never had the PS3 PSN problem (and I have a fat PS3) but it was due to the system clock on many PS3's thinking it was a leap year (Feb 29th) when it is actually 1st of March, now it is the 2nd of march the problem has rectified itself.

Oh well, then that answers that. Cheers.
