SCE's UK managing director Ray Maguire has been speaking to The Guardian about the company's reasoning behind the £425 RRP of PlayStation 3.

"There's a compulsion within the media to look at everything as a snapshot, and do a calculation, normally based on just the RRP in somewhere like the US and just do the RRP in the UK. What you should do with the RRP from the US is add sales tax," he said.

Maguire argues that comparing RRPs is too simplistic an approach, due to exchange rate considerations: "When business trade, they hedge. It depends what currency you're buying against. We don't buy anything in dollars, so the dollar can go up and down.

"If it were $1.40 to the pound as it as a while ago, then the PS3 would be a bargain compared to the US; if it's anything more than that, the UK price appears to be comparatively expensive. But we're dealing with Euros and Yen - it's about the relationship between those currencies."

Any plans for a lower price at some point? "Of course, I would dearly love to have the PlayStation 3 RRP under £400, and at such time as we can afford to do so, we will."

Answering the question of why there aren't any 20GB PS3s at the UK launch, Maguire said it was a consumer led decision, "They want to put their own media on it from day one. So a big preference has been shown towards the 60GB model. And when we look at the sales figures from both Japan and the US, that's reflected at retail. You can either have not enough of both in the marketplace for day one, or you can have round about the right amount of one."

This is non-news. You could put any price in there.

No ****, Sony! That's because of every 10 PS3s you ship, only one is a 20GB.

Sheesh.

You're. Missing. Daan's. Point.

Its a real pity that its so expensive.... its putting so many people off and now loads of people I know who were keen PS fans are just buying 360's purely because of the price, even people who know nothing about consoles say its just too expensive..... price is the issue here with everyone!

The UK being a rip off for this kinda stuff anyway doesnt make it any better... (for example vista being double here than in the US)... but the price to begin with is stupid..... they should lower it to £400 and offer 20GB aswell... 360 offered the core version so why cant Sony.

Sony will sell loads..... but they would sell a hell of alot more if this "oh its £500" mentality went away!

I thought it was £425

It is, was making a point about mentality that's all. The PS3 isn't expensive for what you get, a lot of people don't realise that.

Wait, how long ago was that?
2002 I think.

Yes, as live4speed said I was just saying that peoples perception of money gets distorted when you enter the hundreds of pounds... suddenly you add £25 to £400 and people think oh its around £500 then!

Just like the "99" method of pricing by putting something just under it changes the way people think..... make it £399 and people will think bargain!

Because of this odd price figure they have put on the PS3 its going to put alot of non loyal people off which is the kind of people sony need the most!

They have already shot themselves in the foot delaying till march so when it does come here they better hope everyone doesnt have 360's and Wii's! ... oops thats already happened!

Actually the 360 isn't doing as awesome as you would be led to believe. It is in the US, but in JPN and EU it's not doing much better than the original Xbox did. I see it still winning out for a few months, but I honestly expect the PS3 to pass the 360 in EU by Dec 2007. It wont be until late 2008 that it does the same in the US.

Things will never be the same price though on something like this because of the massive difference in exchange rates, surely?
