sorry noob question

after i get to the online lobby and select a race when i hit start it tells me unable to make connection? please help as i can seem to start an online race.

Let's start from first principles.

1. Do you have an internet connection in the house?
2. Is the PS3 connected to it (either wired or wirelessly)?
3. Do you have a PSN account?
4. Is the PS3 signed into it before you start the game?

Assuming all of these to be "yes", do you get an error code given to you when it says it can't connect?

yes to all. I think the error code is 11.

it says "matching failed"

And that's why we have a search function. "Matching Failed", for Threads in the GT5: P forum would have yielded exactly that thread.
