Some people say that interleague play in the MLB is rubbish. I think it's a great measure of how well you are compared to other teams. With the pace of the Milwaukee Brewers this season, imagine matching them up against nearby AL teams like the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers. Here in Texas, we have the Battle for the Silver Boot between my Houston Astros of the NL and the Texas Rangers of the AL. There's also the battle for New York City's finest between the Yankees and the Mets. There's also the matchup of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. But do you like interleague play?
I'll start.
I'm usually fond of competition. Think about it like this. You have the NFL and NBA in which teams from different conferences go at it. There are even collegiate conferences that have non-conference play before playing in conference. And let's not forget some of the national-level football (as in soccer) teams that take part against other teams outside of national boundaries (for example, my hometown Houston Dynamo took on Chivas of Futbol Liga Mexicana]. I also remember someone briefly talking about how Yokohama F-Marinos upset Manchester United once). Take the NBA. My Houston Rockets would take on teams like Chicago, Miami, New Jersey, Boston... all from the Eastern Conference. Playing in the NBA Western Conference is tough as it is with teams like Phoenix and Dallas. Look in college football where you have teams like Auburn playing against someone like Florida State or Georgia Tech. College basketball can have some matches like St. John's meeting Fordham or even California playing at West Virginia like this past season. But in baseball, it seems like the difference between the American League and the National League seems a bit lopsided or strange. I still like interleague play for the sake of competition. If you're going to be in the World Series, you'll have to eventually take on some competition from the other conference. It isn't like you have to win all the games, but it helps your team realize where you are against the competition. I mentioned the Milwaukee Brewers being the hottest team right now. How would this year's team match up against some of the AL heavyweights? This is a great measure of where a team from one conference stands up against a team from another conference.
