I'm just curious as too why this AMAZING game has poor engine sounds (not all but for the majority of cars) some sound great and really close but come'on. Need for speed has some dam good sounds that are almost identical to the real thing. I love GT always been a fan but I'm dissapointed at how annoying some sound. A great example would be subaru. How can PD possibly think it sounds even somewhat close to a subaru. Why have they gone with these sounds and done nothing about it? Such an advanced game with huge knowledge about automobiles should notice this. The turbo sounds like a dam supercharger also lol

Try to obtain 1000+ cars, and then record the engine note from the whole RPM range, and then put it in the game. And if you put different exhaust parts on your car, try getting all of those cars again, and then putting every conceivable combination of power upgrades on it. Theres just some things that arent practical. NFS has like 50 Cars? They could probably afford to hand-design the noise for each one .

However recording the sound properly I don't think it asking too much. The P4 330 and at least one other car has really bad clipping on the engine and road noise. Sounds awful.

Are you using an HDMI cable and if so are you letting the PS3 set its own sound up from that information? It's the best way.

Certainly no clipping on my P330!

Actually I think they fixed it, but I can still hear clipping on the road/wind noise at speed. I'm using into an Arcam AVR500. Do you have surround sound? It's only from the rear speakers, which more than capable of this.

Tested on licence S-4 where I noticed this the first time. It used to be a lot lot worse.

I'm with the OP here, all the effort that's gone into this game, but the sound us woeful

that's not an excuse! And they don't even have to be unique. How many mx5 variants in the game? All they needed was one sound for most of them. Some of the engine sounds in the game are like they were produced on a cheap 80's Casio keyboard. Some of the supercars sound like a sewing machine.

I really haven't noticed this... and I'm an Audio Production graduate. Setting up your speakers correctly (even if they're just the standard TV speakers) is absolutely essential.

The frequency range of the engine/exhaust tones are (in my own opinion) excellent and compare fabulously with other similar titles.

I think the sound is very sub-parr. The experience is more than just having slick graphics. Too many cars sound the same , this may be down to me using the nose cam. Also the gearbox whine on all the cars makes them sound like an 1970's BL Mini!

Some cars do sound great don't get me wrong but for the tIme this game was in development and with such a deticated team like PD i would at least expect the premium models to sound decent. Engine noise is a big deal for me as I'm a huge car enthusiast. To be honest some cars sound absolutely annoying once you throw on the titanium racing exhaust. Like the lambo's! I have to keep the semi-racing on so it acually sounds good. I really hope PD gets around to some new engine/turbo/supercharger sound effects. It sucks for long races when using a car with poor engine sound where as need for speed I would crank the "engine volume"

Couldn't agree more... no difference between VW R32 VR6 (which in real life is awesome) and Alfa Romeo's 3.2 Q6 (again could've been a great sound). This is present throughout the range of cars. And they seemed to have recorded just one transmission sound with straight-cut gears... you can hear it on any car when installed with the customizable tranny.

I have to agree that some of the samples are a little, errm, over-used... but I still disagree that those samples are actually of a low quality.

Two different arguments :)

Give me all the years PD took for GT5, and I will provide you with every car sound you want.

While I'm here on the sound topic I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have my ps3 hooked up through HDMI on a 1080p LCD tv. My strero is surround sound with a sub-woofer and sounds great, it doesn't support "aux" so what I've done is taken the cord jack where you would plug in an i-pod and I've hooked it up to the headphone jack on my tv. My stereo doesn't acually have dolby digital for some reason but I would think the system still thinks the sound is hooked up through hdmi on my tv. When I automaticly set the sound settings on the ps3 it detects "linear pcm 2ch 44.1 khz" and " linear pcm 2 ch.48 khz" but if I manually select it it shows many options including dolby digital. I was wondering if its possible to set up dolby digital without having any issues like missing sound?

Seriously?!? No DD will not work through your headphone jack. The PS3 will only put out 2 channel DD since it only detects 2 channel capability. I know the Economy is suck all over the world but you can get a decent Harmon Kardon AVR 100 series for under $300. HDMi direct connection and you ready for DD for real. 👍

However this will not make any of the car sound like they should. I fiercely believe that Turn 10's method of strapping cars to a dyno and recording them under load from many different locations is the best way to accurately capture the true sound. Turn 10 didn't do this on all cars in the game, but you can tell that the ones they did are great. Most others sound good too especially the 93 Fox Body Mustang Cobra. I don't know how they recorded car that they didn't dyno, but it is so much better than GT its almost inconceivable. GTs cars sound like they are all spinning in neutral, also can sound like a key board if you rapidly upshift, then rapidly downshift, very weird and sucky.:yuck:

Overall a lot the cars sound half. Decent but there are MANY that are disapointing and not to mention PD could have put a little more effort into the backround ambient noise like the cheering crowd in rally races. Imo its extreamly annoying and repetative. I wonder what inspires them to not ""want" to fix this. I found this video and thought it was kinda funny lol

And this video I found of comparing lamborghini engine sound (gt5 vs forza3 but looks like 2) gt5 obviously wins. I wonder how the lambos sound so great and others fail completely and don't come close. I love subaru and its depressing for me to hear them in gt5

Another kinda jokes video lol (although I don't expect the in car view to sound amazing that's different but its for the humor :p ) http://m.youtube.com/watch?gl=US&client=mv-google&hl=en&rl=yes&v=NSJQ2YaA3fA

Ya that first video was sick, can't believe the vacuum sounded closer to the in game vette than the real life vette, just pitiful.

LOL @ the cat

But yeah, that vid made me realize how bad the (cockpit) sounds are. Good thing I don't use that view.

Best sounds always come from chase cam, as you can actually hear the exhaust.

But, there are some sound anomalies on at least 50% of the premium cars. It's sad because the premiums have the most accurate sounds, but they sound like crap with looping snaps, crackles, rattles, and pops. I seriously think they recorded exhaust sounds on vinyl. I don't see any other way they could have turned out so crappy.

Sound accuracy = premiums win
Sound quality = standards win

Thinks they paid an ex-con $8 an hour to record sounds with his own equipment (For the "new" premiums)

Yea I'm not too impressed with engine and exhaust sound. How does a Honda NSX sound like a Nissan 350/fairlady ??? Lol I hope in the near future PD decides to fix this

Awesome :)

I want my in game suby to sound like this

yea wrx are one of the best sounding cars out there. I always loved hearing one drive by.

like what was said, the sounds are kinda lame in the game

Gt TV is so slow, whats in it? Do they strap them on a dyno and record them under a load, or just rev them in neutral. Thats what it sounds like to me.
