Hey guys just thought I would share a few pics of my Holden Commodore.

1981 Holden VC Commodore Sl/E.
Engine: 5 Litre 308 V8
Gearbox: Turbo 350
Colour: Atlantis Blue Metallic over Nocturne Blue Metallic

Thanks for looking 👍

Looks pretty clean and good condition, which seems to be a rare thing for most Commodores...lol.

A friend of mine used to have a VB SL/E in orange with the 3-speed auto but it was in nowhere near as good nick, as the defect sticker on its windscreen would probably tell you.

That's the reason why I decided to keep it in fairly original, in the nine years I owned it I've only seen five other two-tone VC's.

Thanks for the reply.

Absolutely mint, I like it.👍 I don't know about the windscreen sticker, and I'm sure it's not overly fast, but nice cruiser none the less.:D

Well the windscreen sticker been on the car since 2003, when I got to take the car to Bathurst as part of Commodore's 25th anniversary and as the car has been featured in Unique cars magazine twice in 2008, it's sort of become the cars identity, but it is starting to show it's age a bit.

Thanks for the reply.

nice early commodore, you really don't see any good condition VB/VC's around, especially 2 tone ones. i've got a VB sitting in the shed :)

i see you have air conditioning too, how luxurious, my VS commodore doesnt even have that!

Yeah that's the main reason why I've kept it so long (eight years last december), is that you don't see many non- HDT commodores around any more.

I wouldn't worry about the air con, much like the cruise control, it doesn't work.

yeah, they all just ended up getting driven around by derro's until the wheels fell off and then went to the tip.

mine is only an SL but i have the same wheels as you. unfortunately, my grille was stuffed and you cant by new grilles from rare spares in a VB style, only VC.

Wonderful car. The sticker really dates it... though... big vinyl... so 80's.

But considering the vintage of the car, fitting, somehow.

That very werid considering Rare Spares partnership with Holden, maybe you could pickup a good one on Ebay?

Thanks man, nice to see I'm not the only one who likes the sticker.👍

Thanks for the reply guys.

You don't see single supports on the steering wheel like that anymore, car looks nice.

I have always had a soft spot for VC's as my first car was a 1981 VC (almost 15 years ago), very nice car in great condition, I would have loved a SL/E version back then.

Yeah I think there's a reason why nobody does single spoke wheels any more.
Nice VC!

Look after the headlight wipers, impossible to find
Yeah they are, lucky dad has a VC Brock and he's got a lot of spares.

COOL CAR MATE!!!!

Reminds me a car that we used to have here...The Chevrolet Opala (People says that he was a cousin from the Commodore)

^Never seen that Chev before, looks very boxy, I like it though.

Thanks for the reply.

A while ago I picked up a VB grille from Suttons Parts at Homebush. Vaguely remember them saying they weren't stocking them anymore though. It was painted silver, not chromed like the original.

Ah, very nice car. Any 80s Sedan with a burbly V8 is neat as heck. These cars had intresting forms, they were boxy but laid back, and given the engine size and how it doesnt seem to be tooo crampled underhood, I'd guess they are a bit bigger than what the pictures might otheerwoise suggest. I like it.

Yeah that's one of the main things my car is missing is the original SL/E grill, which was chromed around the outside.

Actually it's around the same size as my dad's VT Commodore, but the pictures probably make look a bit smaller.

Thanks for the reply's.

Opel Rekord platform...

The Europeans were quite dull, the Brazilians fitted the 4.1L engine from the Impala (Opala = Opel + Impala), but the Aussies went further with the V8 engine...

^Yeah that's what I thought, the V8 while quite big at 5 litres only produces around 120kw. (160 hp)

Thanks for the info and the reply.

Only 160hp? I Thought it was more...

So the Opala SS6 250S 4.1 (Straight Six) was more powerfull...It had 171hp...I ALWAYS thought that the Aussies were more powerfull...

Some figures from the Opala SS6:

Max Speed:190,47 km/h
0-60mph:11,67 s
Torque:32,5 kgfm a 2600 rpm

^ I think it was because of the fuel crisis in the '80's. (Ford Aus totally dropped the V8 from their Falcon line up around the same time)

From memory American cars in the '80's also had the same problem. (Large V8's, small Hp numbers)

obviously in the HDT models had a fair bit more hp.

the book i have says the vb 308 with dual exhaust option had 125kw and 352nm.

the VC HDT had 160kw and 450nm. but if you got a VH HDT commodore with the option V5H engine you got 235kw and 451nm. fairly solid in a little car.

Although it started as an Opel platform it was quite different once Holden were through with it, it was far more structurally beefed up and would have had a wider track and possibly a different suspension setup. When they originally tested the Opel platform developing the Commodore it split in 2 over Australia's harsh roads.
The V5H had 177kw.

apparently according to this book there was two different v5h options, the common one being the 177kw one with 9.2:1 compression and then the high output one with 10.0:1 comp ratio and 235kw.

also, it seems HDT did a stroker group 3, was out to 5766cc with 9.0:1 compression. 251kw and 522nm. apparently this stroker engined group 3 did not enjoy commercial success.
