Why does my Minolta 88C-V lose speed during endurance racing (Indy 500)?

It needs an oil change.

During a race?

To answer your question, I think that one of the following things are happening:
  • Your car's oil needs changing - Especially if you bought the car used with lots of miles already on the car. If you don't change the oil then the car's BHP value will slowly drop, so keep an eye on the oil gauge after endurance races
  • You are slipstreaming and hitting the rev limiter - If you are losing speed when your car's rpm is in the redline area, then it is because you are hitting the rev limiter which in real life helps prevent some damage if you are constantly driving the car at high rpms. Try making your sixth gear smaller for more top end.

The car's oil will not change during the race, even at the pits. Therefore, over the course of an endurence race you slowly lose power. When the race is over your oil will need to be changed, and doing so will usually get you back most of the hp you lost during the race. Hp that doesn't come back after an oil change is lost due to engine wear, and you'll need to overhaul the engine. As mileage stacks on a car, it will lose hp permanently (very, very gradually over several thousand miles).
