My parents have owned 2 E-class Mercs. The '89 rode very stiffly and clomped over bumps like an old pickup. You'd think being so stiff riding, it handled like on rails. Nope. Somehow the W134 managed to handle like a boat at the same time. It wallowed and swayed and the steering was awful. So were the seats. But mom and dad loved that car beyond reason and kept it for over 10 years.
The '01 is much better, but is still dynamically challanged-- especially since its a 4 Matic, and there's plenty of understeer. In my opinion, both cars where/are not terribly exciting cars to drive. Just fine for the parents, not for me.
Bumpy? Not anymore, but certainly not up to Lexus standards.
