Don't know whatthe heck it is, but some fellows in this forum may be interested:

According to a press release from Interactive Data Visualization Inc.(IDV). Their premier real-time foliage middleware, SpeedTree RT will be made available for PlayStation 3 developers under an agreement signed recently with Sony Computer Entertainment.

The official website explains the ground breaking tool in an easy to understand format, " The SpeedTree product line enables both real-time developers and off-line animators to incorporate beautiful, animated, and fully 3D foliage into their scenes. In real-time, our proprietary techniques automatically construct trees with built-in levels of detail – and transition smoothly between them – allowing scenes to be populated with many high definition 3D trees. Almost 1,000 tree and plant models representing over 170 core species are available, and SpeedTreeCAD can be used to create variations or completely new trees & plants from scratch."

A free, fully functional evaluation version of the SpeedTree RT middleware is also available for developers who want to try it out first. The evaluation kit includes plug-ins for 3dsmax and Maya, the fully-functional real-time foliage software and the highly versatile SpeedTree CAD foliage editor and creation tool. After the evaluation period is over, a full license can be easily purchased for a sum of $9,995US per title.

“SpeedTree’s ability to quickly bring beautiful, wind-blown and efficient foliage to real-time titles makes it ideal as a middleware choice for the ground-breaking graphical excellence of PLAYSTATION®3," said IDV Vice President Michael Sechrest. “We welcome developers of PLAYSTATION®3 titles to evaluate SpeedTree if they want to give their players truly next generation outdoor environments.”

IDV's SpeedTree licensee list is nothing short of spectacular. Epic Games, Rockstar, Ubisoft, THQ, NCSoft, Webzen are some of the biggest International names in the gaming industry supporting its middleware solutions. SpeedTree has become the ideal solution for game developers across the globe for creating lush green forests on next-generation ground breaking titles.

It's things like this that can add that finishing touch to a game, at least this shows us Sony was serious when they showed that ever growing jungle demo at the E3, stuff like this can make that realistically happen in a game.

Well there goes Xbox360 advantage with its incredible tree and plant rendering through procedural synthesis. But Xbox360's is done in hardware(although there are downsides to using P.S.

I always said I hated how the trees looked in GT games. I hope Gran Turismo 5 will use this. Pretty neat stuff...

this is a wicked middleware prog, ive seen other tech demos using speedtree, and they look amaizing. MS should be worried about PS3 but TBH i dont think that the Box will be a Direct competitor for the PS3. Think of MGS3 with this king of detail :) would look beyond belief.

There is one thing you guys are missing though. If you look at their website, you'll see that this technology is already directly integrated in Unreal Engine 3.0 at its core. So, that means that any game coming out for Xbox360 using that engine, such as Gears of War, will be able to take advantage of this. And, it also lists Ubisoft (Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia) and a load of others that are using this core app. So, while its nice that Sony has come out and said they are going to support this. But, there are already a bunch of dev houses that are using it for Xbox360 as well.

All the trees look fat and cartoony. I don't know if that depends on the game, or if that's the actual program.

the MGS environment sure looks a hell of a lot better than that Trees of Pangea garbage.

Microsoft is already using it.

I think his point was that MS had cited this as a powerful reason their "middle ware" would be superior to all the competitors. Now that it is not exclusive to their hardware, it makes it a null point for them.

so like....If you shoot enough at trees and crap, will they fall?

Thats how i read it too 👍

The good things that come from tghis prog is that they are self shadowing and the react to wind and the like, so they will look alot more real than the trees in GT4.

Do they shed leaves and crap, too? SOMETHING MUST FALL, DAMN IT!

If you shake it really hard, a monkey will throw a coconut on your head. And you will fall, dead.
