Hey my favourite japanese canadonian is 33 today!

Today's a time to celebrate you're away from all your friends and family and that you're in a place you don't really like and feel miserable all over because you're a year older and feel 10 years older, but not a day wiser.

And with that said, you know we're in kind of the same boat, so I only talk about personal experience in that matter ;)

So what did you get? And please don't say a "kobayashi wachatameegeri kamawashigeri" book

Well, last week, I received a Koto era, Sue Tegai school, Kanenaga nihonto. (It's a 500 year old katana).

Today I received cookies.

Those are really good motorcycles
I keep telling them we invented motorcycles....... :p

Seriously though, that's a very nice gift. 👍 My grandpa used to own few swords, bow/arrows, even an armor. I think the swords cost like thousand bucks, and this was when I was like 10!(I'm same age as Speedy..... now).

and Speedy is really proud of those swords... I keep trying to convince him to take them to work. Next time one of those subway pushers comes to him, just take it out and say "go on punk, make my day"

Just wait until you're 33⅓, then things really start spinning...

no pics with the ninja outfit complete with garter belts and latex mask?

umm just in case you didn't know samurai and ninja are not the same. Ninja are considered to have no honor because they do not face their opponent head on, they sneak up behind you and slash you throat. Samurai at least let you know that they have to kill you.

PWNAGE!!!

I think you just ruined his birthday...

Oh yeah, Samurai, send me a beer before I go ninja style on you. :grumpy:

Actually, this is incorrect. Ninjutsu is more a sub-specialty of the samurai. Many traditional samurai ryuha (schools) have sections on the training of ninjutsu in their old densho (documents).

Taken from Otake's book (of Katori Shinto Ryu, considered the oldest samurai school) "Ninjutsu is the art of surreptitiously entering the enemy's territory or premises for the purposes ranging from information gathering, stealing of objects, and planting false information to military activities such as sabotage, guerrilla warfare and assassination."

I could go on and bore you all but I won't.

To say that the difference is a matter of honour belies a lack of knowledge. And that's okay.

Woo, I didn't know that there were samurais who were familiar with ninjutsu. I learned something today.

Ninjas were basically spies. From my understanding, they did fight/kill occasionally, but mostly carried out espionage related activities. Also, their costumes consisted of peasants, or farmers clothes, and not those ultra slick black nenjya(that's how my American friends pronounce it for fun) suits, most of the time. They did have to blend in.

Diablomonkey's right about samurais focusing a lot on their code of honor(at least the good ones), where ninjas, if they cared about honor, they'd be dead ninjas. But as Speedy said, that's not what separates ninjas and samurais.

This is the weirdest birthday thread, ever. I'm so proud....

Actually, if my memory serves me correctly, the idea of Bushido, or a warrior's code of honour didn't take root in the samurai class until near the start of the Tokugawa Shogunate. When peace was brought to the country, all those warriors who were now more or less out of a job, kept practicing their craft and the idea of a code, and a way to enlightenment (budo) started to take root.

You do good work.
