Is anyone watching the spelling bee? Yo, some of these kids are, like, noobs.

I pretty much have gotten them all thus far, minus Mithraeum, which the guy pronounced MithREEEEEEEEEum. That threw me off, because usually "ae" isn't so "ee"ey.

Has anyone ever won a spelling bee on any level? I remember winning a few back in elementary school. Lol. Unfortunately, the practice sort of fell off in middle and high school. I guess you're lucky enough to find people who are even able to compete in such an event.

Share your comments on the televised competition and personal anecdotes!

I've never been a fan of this kind of competition. It's almost like a beauty pageant in a way...some people are good looking and some can memorise words. What kind of talent is that in the real world? Just because you can spell doesn't mean you're intelligent and just because you can't spell doesn't mean you're not.

(And yes, I did spell "pageant" incorrectly first time round  )

The only exciting thing that happened during a spelling bee that I would care to watch is that one kid who passes out, slams on the ground after being told a word to spell. Then, he just gets back up and spells the word correctly and continues on with the spelling bee.

That was about a nine on the "Weird ****-O-Meter."

sOME OF THOSE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL WORDS AMAZE ME. *click* Whoa, a little caps lock mishap there. Anywho, I agree that "ae" should sound like "aye", or "ay", or "A". But it just doesn't work that way.

Back in elementary I was an awesome speller of words, but I always declined a spelling bee. Stage fright. But even now I can pronounce a lot of words that my peers can't, even though they may be "smarter" than me. And some I've never even heard of. Like "quixical". Never knew that one 'til I read a buddy's paper. He's a good guy.

Hey, everyone has their talents, and though I sometimes make fun of uber-intelligent people like these kids, maybe saying "I bet they can't drive a stick," I bet they make fun of me for driving and wasting gas like an idiot. Screw them.

So what channel is this bee on? I'm interested.

Amp, I think it takes a fair amount of intelligence to know strange words in the dictionary. But, I see what you're saying. Most of the challenge lies in knowing the mechanics of all the languages in the world, but even then that is still quite a feat. If they had to know the definition of these words, that would be insane.

I still, of course, respect all the contestants, no matter how many may be nooblets in spelling or other things in life.

I represented my class every year in elementary school. Never could win the school one though.

(I was a geography and spelling bee nerd :D)

I watched a state competition once. Those words they say are freaky and weird at the same time.

What was up with all the German words, though? It was a total Nazi Bee.

Dude, I could have spelled that U---- wahtever word better than that kid. I could do it just from the sound. Now what was that word again?

What? The final word? I forgot the final word, but the canadian girl should've been kicking herself for missing Weltschmerz because she said V instead of W.

what an idiot.
I only took two semesters od Deutsch and ended up hating the class, but I could have spelled that.
