A friend in the US sent me an e-mail this morning about a website called spokeo which lists the names and addresses of certain people. There also seems to be a link between Myspace and Facebook so some people actually have a photo of themselves displayed aswell.

If you reside in the US go to the site and type in your name and see if it locates you and displays your contact information.

I haven't read too much in to it but thought I better post it just in case it affects some GTP members.

This is scary... I'm not in the US, but I typed in a couple of names of old friends from FL and it popped up with ALL of their info. How many people in the household... the names of them... the value of their house... like EVERYTHING!! Very scary.... Big Brother is watching... ;)

Great idea for stalkers!

Not cool, just goes to show how carefull you need to be with your info online and not join every stupid facebook group you get an invite for! I did a search for a few random names and it's shocking how much info it brings up.

The best way to block the information is to check your Myspace and Facebook privacy settings. I believe alot of the information taken from the details entered on those sites.

Apparently my house is worth $600-800k (I WISH!!!), I've lived there for 5 years, while my wife has lived there for 6 even though we've both lived there for 7, I reads about fashion and I like country music.

Yes, there is a lot of info on that site, but for me most of it was wrong, short of name, address and phone number - all of which you can get from dex anyway.

I did forget to mention that the info I did get was dated, as in it was the house they lived in with their parents... while most of my friends in the US, now live on their own and are home owners... Its still scary though... if this is possible imagine what else is.... :scared::scared:

First people share voluntarily personal infos on the interweb, then they are caught by surprise if 3rd parties aggregate them? Nope, nobody forced them to give details, they did so by their own free will.

Apparently I haven't graduated college, I'm in a relationship, make $200k+ a year, own a home, have a home without central heating, and I enjoy cars. At least they got the enjoys cars part right.

No big deal really and it has nothing to do with facebook/myspace. You can find the same info here at yp.com(Yellow Pages). In fact I wouldn't be surprised if all this Spokeo.com did was use that directory(or similar) and put them on a map.

edit: I found a link if you wish to remove a listing.Link It also tells a little about the site.

It has me living with my parents even though I haven't lived in that house for 11 years but it doesn't have the 2 apartments I was in for 6 months each, which is kind of understandable, or the house I was in for 3 years, which I don't understand.

Don't put too much stock in this, peoples. Like said - the only information they have right is in the phone book.

Yep, found myself at my current address. Got my parents right, but also lists my father's first wife (divorced...and then she died of cancer) still in this household. Otherwise everything says "unknown".

It says I own my own house (wrong) that's worth $1m+ (very wrong), that I'm an aries (wrong), I have children, (wrong) and the neighborhood is below average (also wrong).

The only thing that website has (partially) right is my name and address.

Your house must really stand out than if the rest of the neighborhood is below average.

I'm not even on there at all, although if you look up my phone # it says I own a 840k house and make 54k/year. I wish that were true.

Glad to hear that the majority of the information is wrong. 👍

It can't find my name but it found my facebook and deviantart info from my email address. And I suspected it would.

This is why my Dad and his sister have all this crazy info on their facebook pages. Like that she lives on Mt. Doom and is Reform Jewish.

Yeah, I'm getting sick of driving through all those below average neighborhoods with their paltry million dollar homes. How do you people tolerate such squallor? :dopey:

edit: .../sarcasm. And I'm kind of happy it doesn't seem to work for Canada. Probably some other site that does, though -_-.

Most of the info seems to come from the phone book, which Canada does have. If someone wanted to they could put your name into this site and find out where you live as long as it's registered.

This is nothing new, it's just on the internet instead of a 1,000 page book you get every year.

I found myself, :scared:
Correct address, wrong picture of the house, but no other info....there are 537 of me in California alone, talk about popular name!

I like this website. I'm sitting here in our $1M+ house without central heating or cooling and in a below average neighborhood. Well that's what it said about my parents since I'm not listed on it.

I'm glad that according to this website, I don't exist.

They don't list people under 18, mostly because legally all your info is private until you are 18.

My parents aren't on there either.

Oo i found my uncles. And quite a lot of info on them. . this is quite scary. .

this is quite scary. .

Not really, If I wanted to I could have found out all the info this site provides elsewhere on the internet(or the courthouse). This site really is only gathering info(granted most of it is apparently wrong) from several public databases and gathering it into one place.

Wow..I hadn't even heard of this website until now!

Doing a little 'playing around' and I was able to verify about 1/2 of the information this site pulled back regarding a few people I know...so I'd say for the most part, it's pretty accurate!

I especially like the Google Map section as well...pretty slick if you ask me! :-)

Haha they don't have me! No one with my name in Minnesota (where I'm from), and the ones in Michigan are all in different cities.

Haha, thats Nawesome. I'm listed twice in Oregon, my old apt and my new house. No picture at least.

If this was in the uk you could sue them.
