Imagine for a minute that XP is unlimited. People who reach a ranking of expert drivers can act as sponsors for lower ranking drivers.

The way this would work is, the sponsor provides a car needed for his driver, and the way it works is, the driver shares his winnings with the sponsor. There can be multiple drivers per sponsor. The sponsor earns half the money from all winnings, but all the drivers earn double XP depending on how they drive.

Eventually, the drivers reach a level where they too can become sponsors. It would ease the grind for everyone. You have people drive for you, and win you money, while your drivers earn more XP.

Video games have evidently caused people to completely forget what experience is. The term and concept of experience existed long before there were video games or table-top games like D&D. Experience is not a form of currency, something you can grow on trees, or something you can print out unlimited copies from a printer.

Let's say that we want you racing a real race car for real. Now, let's say that you don't have any real-world racing experience. That's okay. We're going to decide that you gain quadruple experience from your first five races. That way, in just five races you gain as much experience as you would from twenty normally. Sound good to you?

True, maybe a point system. IDK, I was thinking more along the lines as XP being points for being a clean but fast driver. For those points to increase, you need to get better.
Your not earning experience like points, you are getting more experience, therefore getting better, therefore earning more points.

You get points as a reward for how well you've driven.

Exacly, like the way Shift gives you points, distiguising agressivity and precision.
XP is used just to the players feel that they are progressing through a game.

I was expecting this thread to be about a system to get sponsored and earn more money or cars in the game. That would be nice, but would probably need to wait for GT6.

NFS:U2 had a neat sponsorship system, and it could be applied to racing in Gran Turismo sans the need for earning 'appearance points' for your car and being featured on a magazine. For those unfamiliar with the system, a sponsor would offer you a contract for a car and extra cash for race wins. There were multiple sponsors to choose from, each with different terms. Certain sponsors wanted you to do certain types of races and a certain number of them in order to fulfill the contract, so you had to choose carefully.

Sponsorships for XP just seems kinda 'meh.'
