The Spore: Galactic Edition has been announced for $79.99
I typically hate special editions of games because they are always gimmicky but I'm seriously thinking about switching my pre-order to this. The game just has the potential to be that awesome that I would gladly enjoy the extra content then are giving.

I thought that was a rip off. I paid $40 for rFactor and they let me redownload it as much as I want for free.
And after I downloaded it the game kept crashing when I tried to boot it up.
Turns out there is a defective .dll file that had to be replaced.
Anything EA touches is buggy or pathetic nowadays. Once Spore comes out expect the number of bugs at release to be astonishing. Expect a patch every couple of weeks.
Now I will make creatures. Oh, and I better get a coupon to get money off the full game for purchasing this.

Exactly. This is being made by gaming genius Will Wright, and the game has been in development for 7 years. I'm not expecting any kind of EA failure (mainly because EA leaves Maxis alone), and the rest of the doubters should do some research.

He he. Spore had a release date of 4th Sep here in Australia, but because the distributor failed to put "Do not sell until 4th Sep '08" the stores started selling them as soon as they received them yesterday.
Must get my hands on a copy this weekend when I find some time.

I've got it. Not bad, but don't believe all the hype about this changing the future of gaming or anything. The cell stage is pretty much useless. The creature stage gets repetitive really quickly. Tribal stage is okay, but nothing too special. Haven't done anything past that at the moment.
Graphics are great - music suits the game brilliantly - good fun making new creatures, and the sharing system works flawlessly (so far) - just needs more variation (and purpose) in the early stages.

It get's better as it goes on. The problem is that everything leading upto the space stage feels like it's only there to stop you getting to the space stage straight away. Once yo reach the space stage the game really opens up and it get's a lot more interesting. Upto that point there are interesting bits but as a game it's not amazing. Each satge get's better as you go along though imo.

Haven't played it yet, but I was watching my gf's brother playing it for an hour or so last night, and have to say, it looks brilliant.
First thing to point out is that it runs very well even on an average PC, and if you have a high-end gaming PC you'll never trouble it even slightly. The graphics are great, cartoony but perfectly suited for the sort of game it is. I didn't see the very start of the game with the single-celled organism, but the aquatic creature stage looked great and not too easy either - plenty of bigger creatures come after you. Then, when you morph even bigger it's amusing for the hunter to become the hunted. It's also really cool seeing the absolutely enormous creatures swimming about in the background, and yet when you've evolved a few stages they're only a little bigger than you, and then much smaller as you evolve further. Haven't seen much of the dry land gameplay yet apart from around the nest.
The character customisation looks brilliant, there's enough variation in colour, texture and appendages that very few players will have the same creature.
I'm seriously considering buying the game for myself. It's more interesting to me and looks like it has more depth than games like The Sims.

I love this game, it is like the Sims meets Civilization meets Age of Empires. The creators are quite a bit of fun to play around with and the game itself it rather addictive as well.

Got the game earlier on today, and I'm very impressed. So far I'm up to the creature stage, so from what I've been reading it's only going to get better! About 20 minutes ago I was attacking another creature when all of a sudden a nearby volcano started to errupt, all the creatures started fleeing. I was about to do the same (wasn't sure if it could kill me) but I ended up staying there just watching how fantastic it looked. I honestly haven't done that with any game since Grand Theft Auto 3.

So far I'm loving the game, everything about it is great. Although it's the only game I've ever played that caused controversy. While at school today I was playing it on my laptop while waiting for my next class. I typically play games quite a bit at school so I was surprised when three people came up to me and asked me if I could turn the game off. A bit taken aback I inquired why, I didn't have the sound on so I was pretty sure I wasn't disturbing anyone.
Apparently the game was offensive to them because it was blasphemous and went against God and creation. They told me to go to the site www.antispore.com to see how idiotic (there words) I have been for support EA's anti-religious game. When I pointed out to them that your creatures could develop and spread their religion in the game, they started getting rather hostel telling me that "I should burn in hell for buying a game that teaches false gods" and that "they hoped God would smite me for my evil ways".
Now I know EA is a terrible company, but anti-religious? I don't think so. I don't see what is so offensive about the game, if anything you are basically doing intelligent design which negates random evolution.
Anyways I politely asked the three of them to respect my privacy and not look at my laptop (there was no since being hostile towards them). They took up a seat at the table behind me and continued to say, but I just popped in my headphones and ignored them. My buddy sitting at the table with me, who is fairly religious, said he was embarrassed by the way they acted after they left. I knew I was in a religious area but really, do people have nothing better to do they scout out video games?
