OK, found some info on it. Here's a preview video of it...

And by looking at it (along with some hints from people inside MS), you'll probably be able to see what game is in the disc drive – like here.

Another big thing: the Marketplace (presumably both Video and XBL) will have its own blade... and on the XBL blade, they will integrate MSN Messenger.

...And when you unlock an achievement, instead of saying "Achievement Unlocked", it will tell you what achievement you unlocked specifically, and how many points its worth.

And supposedly it'll be out May 7th.

 👍

Sweet, I really like how they are adding the achievement feature, I can't tell you how many countless times I sit there wondering what the hell I just unlocked.

If you press the Xbox button it will show the achievement details. It won't pause your game though, so pause first.

Ya I know that, but that's a hassle to do especially when you are in the middle of a game.

Actually, in most games, it pauses for you.

Oh. Well, it doesn't pause in TDU anyways, but I guess that may be related to it being online.

OK, it looks like GameSpot pulled the video. Someone put it on YouTube before it happened, so... ya. I replaced the link with an embedded video.

1. You can't see the game (resolved)

2. I would like another color besides retina burning orange. ( Backrounds make the text hard to read)

3. Why can't I turn off the annoying sound effects?

1) What game? You mean whats inside the disc tray?

2) You can change the backgrounds you know, right? Make a big picture CD like I did and create a bunch of your own personal themes (my favorite right now is 'XP Chief' from the Bungie website...)

3) Sound effects? You mean when it goes wish-wish when you change the blades?

---

I'm always happy to see an update, and this is no exception. The achievement one is a good idea. I've always hated how the game will tell me I've unlocked one, and then it is up to me to figure out which one it is...

Themes, or you could put pics on a CD and use them as a background. Use pics like these – they have more of a general color, and that makes the text easier to read. Don't use these type of wallpapers as well since they have a larger variety of colors.

3. Why can't I turn off the annoying sound effects?
Umm, it's an option you can turn off already.

I mean heck, I would've thought you would've mentioned the over-organizing of videos and marketplace content and all... not just simple, easy-to-change nitpicks. But each to his own.

I like the new download feature. Queue up files you want to d/l overnight, then the console goes into low-power mode while downloading. (No annoying fan noise!)

EDIT: From the horse's mouth, all the details about the spring update:

Yes, yes, yes!

The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.

...

When the user is in the dashboard and an Xbox 360 game is in the console then the name of the game is displayed in the tray icon of the dashboard. If the user highlights the tray icon then achievements and gamer score are displayed for that game based on the signed in user. Xbox1 games show the name and image of the game.

...And it looks like they're adding support for H.264 and MP2 Part-2 files as well. 👍

In my opinion I love the mystery of it. Hopefully there's an option where you can revert to the simple "Achievement Unlocked"

Hooray for H.264!

That bodes well for DL.TV goodness on the 360...

I just heard from the Dashboard team that we'll have to wait at least another day for the Dashboard update to be released. The update is not being released in the next 24-hours. That is all I know at this time, but I’ll get more information tomorrow afternoon (PT) and I will update this post as needed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Edit: As has been pointed out by some community members, the official press release does say the ‘week of May 7th’ for a release time. So we’re well within that so far. It sounds like some folks missed that part, so that’s why I wanted to post this update.

This question might be obvious, but I cannot remember the initial set up of the accounts.

Does your account originally become a child account if you tell it your age is below 18? My father has an account that can set permission for me and my brother (14 and 16 years old respectively), but even when absolutely everything is enabled, the IM chat section says "Windows Live messenger isn't allowed for child accounts". Ever since I've been setting other accounts elsewhere to the right age to avoid this unnecessary fuss.

Is there anyway to change this without changing the email address? If not, then that's completely crap, as I know 9 year olds who use MSN...

I guess I'm suppose to be overjoyed like every other 360 owner? I see things changed here and there but it's not enough to make me want to jump for joy.

You'd need to setup your own account, to avoid the lovely "Children restrictions".
Bah, I'll forget it then... It's really not worth the fuss since I talk to most through the PC anyway. I just find it extremely odd you can have video and voice conversations, but not IM!

Yes.

This update has been a big letdown. No MSN messaging, still no "ads" for under 18 users (they let you know what content is available when merely looking around the dashboard), and I'm not liking how the marketplace has its own blade.

I find it ironic that I can do video chats with my friends and download the demo of one of the most violent games last year without hassle, yet I can't use a service the vast majority of teenagers (including me) on PCs use.

If it weren't for the system telling what game is in the drive, they could've kept the update to themselves for all I care.
