Hi everyone. With SSDs getting cheaper should I consider putting in a SSD instead of a HDD? My other question is will a SSD run cooler so the fan is quieter because my fan gets fairly loud and i dust it all the time? Thanks.

For the price its still not worth it. There really isnt a need for it in PS3. If you upgrade your HDD for Speed over Space whats the point of having a faster HD over a bigger one. A 120-320GB HD @ 7200 is more practical than a 60-100GB SSD. I have just over 220GB left on mine and space is more important than speed.

I AGREE, space is more important than speed.

i not so sure about the space, sure you need enough to hold game data and such, but 100Gb SSD would be plenty with a external or stream for media, not so sure the speed is worth the extra cost though, but i have not looked into SSD load times or anything

Someone on another thread fitted an SSD and didn't notice any real difference. Of course not all SSDs are equal though :-)

Most reviewers seem to agree that it reduces heat.

I tackled this debate and came to a conclusion that real speed benifits of SSD are not realized over HDD until you are running a striped raid over multiple drives.

Wheither or not storage space is more important than performance, that remains to be individual preference. There is always external storage options and not everyone keeps everything on their PS3.

No moving parts.

Hard drive failure seems to be the root cause of recent PS3 failures.

Not sure I'd agree with Pako and it would certainly depend on what type of RAID (plus the type of IO activity and of course SLC or MLC)........ but this is all irrelevant to a PS3 as there is no RAID!

More relevant is the previous post about reliability. I think SSDs are in some ways less reliable, or more accurately less long lasting. You also need to keep an eye on firmware upgrades http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ssd-performance-power,review-31565.html . In fact Tom's seems a good place to read about SSDs for anyone new to the subject.

A member here on GTP, posted a similar question a little over a year ago:
HD Replacement. SSD Drive?
The responses that he got in that thread are similar to those that you're getting here.
