For what it's worth, heres my cockpit, might give someone a couple of ideas, I've learned quite alot during the process of building this thing, I'm sure there will be more to come aswell !!!

My Cockpit

Hey doc
that looks like a real nice set up.

I am just in the process of getting my rig built. I am also fitting toggle switches for energy saving.

nice work

For some reason I'm strangely drawn to wooden wheels !

Like this.....
omp_mugello_wheel.jpg

I want to replace my G25 wheel with a bigger one, but hadn't considered the "classic" look until I saw this picture, quite taken with the idea now.

Edit..................

After a bit of planning, and a few injuries ! i came up with this..........

The wooden wheel still needs an adapter made and fitted, but it proves the concept does work.

Classic wooden wheel for driving classic cars, sports wheel for modern cars, etc.

Great evolution of the pit m8.

Do you have any docs or pics of your shifter build? I currently don't own a shifter and after buying a Fanatec wheel and CSP's can't afford to buy one.

I do however own an old gamepad that works fine under win7 so i am keen to try and make a DIY sequential shifter.

I'll throw something together at the weekend if I get a chance, it's actually very simple to make, but you can waste an awfull lot of time and effort going in all the wrong directions, like I did !

You're a gent. I have seen a few that seem OK but i would like mechanically simple and a nice feel.. These hands are not natural DIYers but i'm willing to give it a go.

Here you go, hope it helps a bit !

Bloomin nora... that is an absolute work of genius.. I don't think i have seen a simpler design. Thats definately something i think i could do.

One question, by silicone i presume you mean like sealant that plumbers or decorators use.. comes in a tube that you fit to a gun?

I am definately going to give this a go.

Cheers m8.

Thats the stuff, like I said in the video, it takes a good two days or so to cure properly, the first one I did when I checked it the day after I made it I thought it was perfect, but the next day it was much too stiff, trial and error.

What you can do though is start with a thin piece of wood, say 20mm thick, then if it's too weak cut another piece of wood, make the hole and attach it ontop of the first one, fill with silicone and it'll add some stiffness.

You're right about it being simple, you should see some of the other designs I tried before this, I've got the scars to prove it, almost lost a finger fitting the springs in it.

wow. its looking really good! but is that even useable on the ps3? why use the ps3 button layout?

Then I suggest you build a wooden cockpit to match and make sure you can match the varnish to stain it with and probably a vintage race seat.

One thing at a time old chap ! Rome wasn't built in a day after all...........

After a bit of testing I decided that the MOMO wheel was too heavy and ultimately, too big for a race car feel, so I decided to modify the old G25 wheel and make it a bit more like the wheels you get in say a Super GT car, this is what I ended up with.

It feels quite nice, and It'll do until I can get hold of one of these....

Although, to be honest, I think it looks better than the MOMO one (I am biased of course), lighter too, which was the main reason I ditched the other MOMO wheel, so I might stick with it.....

Anyway, it was easy to do, thats the main thing.

Hope you don't plan on drifting or turning your steering wheel more than 90deg.

Pretty cool though man, gotta give you big thumbs up for actually doing all this yourself and making it decent. Wish there were mods for fanatec wheels.

Luckily I can't drift to save my life ! because the wheel is useless for drifting, but in normal driving I never have to move my hands from the 9-3 position so it's perfect.

Rallying may be a bit tricky as well, will have to see how it performs in GT5 and possibly get hold of a rallying wheel, which are cheaper than the Formula type wheels, which is good :)

And since I have the quick change adapter sorted already it will be easy to change wheels quickly.

Things have been really hectic lately, my life has changed quite abit !

To cut a long story short I don't have a cockpit anymore, but I do have access to a space in the garden where I now live, had to be done really...........

So it's early days yet, quite a bit to go until the shed is finished, then I can get to work on my cockpit, going to take my time with this one, hopefully I can add a triple monitor setup, funds permitting.......
