S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CREEPS INTO BETA

Yes, GSC Game World's title is still in the land of the living and it's taken a step closer to completion

Anyone who still has the hots for the long-awaited S.T.A.L.K.E.R., congratulations first of all because you've managed to stay turned on to the game for around three zillion months without loss of ardour. But also, you might be tempted to roll around in Vaseline with glee at reports that GSC Game World's title has finally moved into beta.

Unfortunately, there's still no confirmed release date for S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but it's currently expected to appear post autumn 2006 - which may mean Christmas 2006 or a slip - god help us - into 2007. Indeed, Oleg Yavorsky, GSC Game World's PR manager, has said of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s release previously that it'll be done when it's done: "It's an extensive game, which will set new yardsticks in its category and we want to ensure that we publish the game only when it fulfils the high expectations of both ourselves and our fans, and not before."

However, now it's reportedly moved into beta (according to fan site stalker-world) a concrete release date may be lurking just around that corner. Or perhaps not, but we'll keep on chasing and see what we come up with.

S.T.A.K.E.R. is a survival FPS/RPG for PC which casts you as a bounty hunter scavenging the deserted wasteland around the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power station as you battle other opportunists and the radiation-streaked mutants roaming the land folks.

If no one has seen this game in action, I post some screens and videos up later on buds.

Man, I've been reading about Stalker for years and it's still not out? I thought it must have appeared and I missed it.

It looked awesome a few years ago even so it'll probably look even better now though. And it was a very cool premise with a lot of cool ideas implemented, like 30 square kms of land to wander about in, guns that you have to modify and the way that the sentient creatures of the land, like the radioactive dogs have their own A.I.

Are there any signs of an Xbox360 version? I hope so because my gaming money this year is going on the 360, not more computer parts.

I don't want this game to get me interested in it again if it's not out until late this year. I'll get interested in it nearer the release date. Potentially fantastic game though.

Played a Pre-Alpha leak some 1.5 to 2 years ago.. Looked good then. BUT - I wonder what'll happen when/if they release a good game with an engine optimised for yesteryears graphics cards....

Shame on you, its people like you who cause some of the delay. But the main delay was because of the AI needed to be sorted out mates.

Sounds like a great game, if it ever comes out. I just hope it will be (a lot) better than Boiling Point.

Agreed, I got boiling point because it seemed like it had so much potential, but it just wasn't put together all that well and absolutely loaded with bug's.

They kept delaying this game so much. At the time when it first appeared it was all the rage. But now its graphics look dated and so on. I'm still awaiting this game, but with less lust than before.

When (if?) it ever comes, I'll get it. But I won't be holding my breathe. ;)

I bet the graphics will improve, i don't think they also look dated. I have seen much worst, plus the main thing for a great game is gameplay.

The lighting effects are realy, really good. The rest of the graphics can inprove with better effects, and resolutions ect, the actuall modelling isn't bad.

To play Stalker in high you will need a good spec PC, since it needs a good amount of power to handle the AI. Aswell as the Physics and Graphics.

THQ announces holiday results, delays S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Publisher meets projections, sheds light on confusing announcement from Ukrainian FPS developer.

While game industry publishers and analysts alike predicted a falling sky when it came to 2005's holiday sales figures, THQ made a note of standing by its previously stated projections. Today the company announced its financial results for the quarter ending December 31, 2005, and it turns out the publisher actually surpassed its expectations.

The company had projected $320 million in revenue for the 2005 holidays, and actually pulled in a little less than $358 million. However, that's still short of the $400 million in sales the company posted for the same quarter the year before.

Profits were likewise down from the prior year. THQ's net profit for the quarter totaled $47.6 million, $.72 cents per diluted share. For the 2004 holiday quarter, the company reported profits of $62.9 million, or $1.05 per diluted share.

THQ credited the numbers to its strategy of targeting mass-market consumers. During the quarter, it shipped more than a million copies each of Bratz Rock Angelz, The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer, and SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, Pants.

In the conference call accompanying the publisher's quarterly report, THQ also settled a matter of great confusion. Earlier this week, the Ukrainian developer of the sci-fi PC first-person shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl sent out an e-mail saying that the game "is on the stage of beta approval."

While THQ didn't address the developer's announcement directly, it did say that the game is now scheduled for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2007 (January through March of 2007). Gas Powered Games' spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, was also confirmed for the same quarter.

Speaking of THQ's upcoming fiscal year, the publisher also gave its first performance projections for the year. It expects sales to increase 14-20 percent, despite an expected transitional slump for the industry as the next-generation consoles carve out their chunk of the market.

Investor reaction to the report was mildly positive, as THQ stock was trading up $.30 to $26.50 at press time, with more than twice the normal volume of shares trading hands.

*****in!

With the game almost out, it is time to bring this topic back from the dead folks.

So, is anyone else playing it?

I really like it. Bit buggy, and not long enough, but the immersion and world detail are incredible.

Oh, also....

lmao yeah I thought I'd broken the game at that point. It's a pretty cool game, very confusing though and I'm not sure what I should be doing most of the time.

In stream on consciousness style. . .

OK just launched Steam. Saw advertisement. Stalker $5. Heard of stalker: good. Yes. Regular $20. Does Greggums have $5? Undoubtedly. Must paypal. My pay pal. Always there for me. Paid with pal. Download: down that load. Onto harddrive. Very fast. Load: 1.1MB/s! Almost down. 15%.

Wait, few more mins. A coffee & sammich maybe? Anxious. Thoughts? Hmm, yes, thoughts: a few would be nice. Any?

</end resurrection>

It's a good game marred by some weird quirks and translation wackiness. I've heard many recommendations for this recent mod, even for a first playthrough.

Unlike many STALKER mods, it doesn't make dramatic changes to the story or game mechanics, it polishes the presentation and fixes some of the frustrating weirdness in the original. It supposedly works with the Steam version, and I'll be playing through it again once I get through more of my Steam games backlog.

Also, "I SAID COME IN DON'T STAND THERE! I SAID COME IN DON'T STAND THERE! I SAID COME IN DON'T STAND THERE! I SAID COME IN DON'T STAND THERE!"
