Start menu gone!

Hello,

It seems my explorer.exe file is messing up and my start menu doesn't want to work anymore.

I installed StyleXP the other day, so I could make my desktop look like a mac.
Now the start menu has managed to close when I open it up, I have tried ctrl-alt-del ----> File -----> New (Run) ----> "Explorer".
It flashes up on the screen for 0.03 secs, then closes, I've rebooted, tried everything I could think of. I looked at other threads on this subject, but I can't seem to find a way to fix this.

Please help.

Maybe its because its a Mac skin...;)

This occurred to me several times, but not as severe as yours. My WindowBlinds skin sometimes makes Start Menu "invisible"
 
StyleXP is just a theme loader, isn't it? Maybe you just need to change themes or disable StyleXP and see what happens.

It's a lot better IMHO because it doesn't take extra resources like Style XP. All you have to do is download the hacked DLL and Replacer to replace the files.

But seriously, StyleXP is garbage. You can either do it the MachOne way (uxtheme.dll) or the lazy way (Windowblinds FTW), but stay away from StyleXP.
 
I'd agree with Tornado and go with WindowBlinds. I've been using it for years without problems 👍 Hope you get it sorted.
 
Is Styler different to StyleXP? I use that and don't have any problems.
 
Windowblinds is great until you try to uninstall it. Then it hides somewhere and comes back to torture the uxtheme patch. Stay away from applications altogether and go for the patch.

For your current problem, boot it in safe mode and do a system restore. When the PC is starting up, keep tapping f8 until you get a boot mode selection screen. Your PC will probably start beeping at you if you're pressing F8 and it's already up. Anyways, select safe mode, and when it pops up with "do you want to continue running in safe mode?" click no (or it might be yes - read the information first) and system restore will appear. Then you just go back to before it was working (you can see what else might have caused it, too).
 
Themes are nothing more than ressources eaters. In my opinion, if you want a MAC theme so bad, get a MAC. StyleXP, WindowBlinds, even the XP theme takes alot of ressources.

Get used to Windows Classic if you know what I'm saying...

Take it this way, candies makes you fat. It's the same thing with themes, eye-candies makes fat processes.

Windowblinds takes up less than a third of the system recources Winamp takes when it is off. It takes up less than half of the rescources of Google Desktop, not to mention only about 400k more than logging onto the computer does. You could, you know, buy more RAM if you want your computer to look like a Mac. Probably costs less than even an Apple II would go for these days.

This is only a problem if you have <512 MB of RAM.

I'd rather have 512MB of RAM at DDR2 1066 than 1GB at DDR400 though.

Better than my Inspiron 1100. Two 128MB sticks at 266Mhz... :ill:

I'll have 2GB of 800Mhz in this on Monday though.

And my PC blocks the install of the uxtheme patcher. I'm not sure why.

Just stick with WindowBlinds, its the safest in my opinion. Only once did it crash for no apparant reason. Though my system resource is pretty much used up thanks to all the customization I've done...

That'd be why. Great until you want to instal another theme program, or the patch. Not the safest option by any means. It's not all bad, but I wouldn't suggest it to anyone because they just won't be able to get rid of it when they want to.

After actually reading through the thread, I realized that "yeah, that may be the reason". But I didn't have much difficulty removing and reinstalling WindowBlinds when it crashed on me. I used Advanced Uninstaller Pro. Maybe that helps.
 
Speaking of WindowsBlinds, I'm using that right now...:D Azensis two FTW! :D

Also, you might need to shut off all computers in your network...:(

There's no problem with the uninstalling wizard. That's gives no resistance. It's the fact that it doesn't properlly uninstall the program. It removes every bit of evidence of it, but for some reason windowblinds still manages to cling on and appear out of nowhere 3 days into using the patch. Ahh stardock...
