Steering Assist, sim or pro?

In gt3, setting steering assist to pro just meant you could actually use full lock and so counter steer properly when the tail stepped out at speed.

I havnt played enough gt4 to know whether i just need heaps more practice with it on Sim mode(which im more than happy to do) or whether i should start practising with steering assist set to professional if i really want those big angle drifts.

If there is a good drifter (preferably with a vid) that uses simulation mode that can vouch for it and say yes it is definately possible, then i will just go and practise my little socks off.

I've seen tankspanker's video and he uses a DS2, and thats the kinda drift i want, and that just seems very distant at te moment, and i don't just mean that im some under practised n00b, it just seems that at any serious angle, any steering input or throttle input results in a spin.

Are my dreams of drifting like i did in gt3 with the cars&tracks of gt4 all wrong?

Any help or input much appreciated.
 
Take it down to Professional or Amature. There is NO shame in it. Infact, I don't know any "drifters" that use the Simulation setting. So take it down a bit and keep practicing. With that kind of attitiude you're sure to do quite well if you stick with it.

Fantastic. See i love the game and drifting, but just didn't want to be limiting myself like i would have been in gt3 had i stuck with simulation, especially if the 'others' don't use it.

sorry to be a pain, but whilst in the options menu, erm, what is "active steering"? i don't really plan to use it whatever it is, just wondered what it meant, and how it differs from power assist?

Ah! well that would make sense. I know it does on my DF.

yeh i thought maybe that was the case when it said gt force then referered to the DFP seperately. The plot thickens.
 
Why the heck would they only allow those additional options for the df and not the dfp? Shouldnt the higher end piece of equipment get at least the same amount if not more control options within the game?
 
What he say sis definately true though, i stopped being a moron and actually raed the scrolling text, does exactly what it says on the tin.

I really don't want to have to resort to turning on power assist, just doesnt seem right.

Back to the drawing board then.

Yeah, but does anyone know what the ACTUAL DIFFERENCE is? If it's more assist and less sim, I'll accept the difficulty and do it the hard way...

Well, since at this point in time, I'm not sure which wheel has that option and which doesn't in GT4. I'll go with GT3 standards.

Having the steering assist on "Simulation" pretty much meant that there was no assisting. That made drifting very very hard. I had mine on Amature for that reason.

Now in GT4, I'll check it out tonight when I get home.
 
The active steering option is the worst option to have on when drifting.

I use a dfp and it was all I could do to get sideways, and when I could it would be too violent to control. It's like ASM but it literally steers the wheels for you.

The option defaults to off. I guess I turned it on just to see what it did and forgot...my drifting has improved 1000% since I realized it was on.

It makes it impossible to stay on that edge of balance you ride through the drift.

hrm that makes me feel better then i guess.

im just starting to figure out how to hold some large angles with it set on sim.... but there are only a few corners i can do it on.

im too lazy to swich between sim/pro everytime i swich between grip/drift driving.

just tuff it out on sim 👍

i thought i was a pro at drifting because of gt3... well about 2 weeks later in gt4 and i still dont have it down yet.... but im getting there..... slowly

no .. actually im on pure sim, no helping (helping has seemed to make me crash alot)

sad thing is.. im using a dual shock.. need to go out and get a DFP (although that was kinda funny with that whole crowd jumping around me at a store when i was drifting testing out a DFP that was fun) [yes made sure it was all pro on that too]

just whatever suits you best
 
Just decided to bring this back up, what are all you guys using now? Amateur, pro, or sim?
 
Sim setting is good for grip racing, because it feels natural, but once you lose grip, the cars gone. =/
 
How does steering assist work? does it shake or lose control less often? or does it take less movement to steer the car?
