Steering wheel question.

Hello,

I was just wondering if it would be possible to convert a real car steering wheel into a G25/DFGT/etc. Basically what I mean is, would it be possible to transfer all the insides of a PS3 wheel into an MG (or Rover) steering wheel? Obviously I would have to cut the appropriate holes for the PS3 button's, but is it possible? I'd love to do it. :D
 
If it can be thought it can be done, but the time and costs may be unknown...you just need a lot of duct tape lol <---joke.



People change the wheel size all the time, certain mounts need to be done to connect to the guts of the wheel, but its probably going to be some work.

It's not that hard to do yourself – minimal skills and almost free. You'll need use of a power drill and a hacksaw. A vice and a metal file will be very useful too.

– Remove the G25/27 wheel and mark the mounting holes where the steering wheel bolts to the Logitech unit. I just used a piece of paper and and pencil like a brass rubbing to get the positions.

– take a piece of steel plate to use as an adaptor (I used a section of wide metal bracket from a DIY store that costs almost nothing) and drill the holes using the paper as reference

– now hold up the real wheel to your adaptor plate and, through the holes in its central mounting section, mark your adaptor plate to drill holes for bolts to fix the wheel to the plate – making sure that you don't have the two sets of holes in conflict and that the bolts will not foul anything on the G25 unit. Worth looking carefully here before you drill!

– you will also have to route the wheel button wires through this central section to and mount the buttons on the new wheel

As you can see, depending on the dish of the wheel, you may have to replace – or, more easily, extend the paddles. Just needs a bit of alu L-profile and some small bolts.

The Elise wheel is OK – I stripped out the big metal crash-absorbing centre structure* of the non-airbag wheel, so it's actually fairly light – and not that much larger.

* Not really going to need it on a sim :D
 
Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to go pick up a wheel from a scrapped MG ZS when I've got the time and get round to doing this. 👍
 
Same idea as SpeedyK, only different, if you know what I mean......



Made from 20mm thick perspex, easier to work with than metal, sometimes!

If I don't remove the wheel before power up it does take a fair bit of abuse when it calibrates though.
