Looking to buy a wheel for a friend of mine who is a huge gt5 fan like myself. Is Logitec the only way to go or are some of the other wheels like Fanatec acceptable? I don't have a big budget to spend so any advice would be extremely appreciated/helpful! Thank you!

Buying a wheel for a friend? Your a better man than I. And I have a DFGT and it works great, but I've heard nice and bad things about lots of wheels. It depends on what he's using it for, Logitech is usually a good buy though. 👍 Welcome to GTPlanet :).

Well obviously the more expensive wheels are going to have a few better features such as a clutch and an H shifter but it'll also hurt your pocket book if you don't have the green. I have the DFGT wheel by Logitech and I love it, it is also about half the price a some of the other higher end wheels. I only paid $140 w/ tax for mine which isn't bad at all for a good wheel IMO.

Edit: It was also made with GT5 in mind, hinting the name Driving Force Gran Turismo so that's another plus in my book!

If you're in the UK, Argos had a good deal on the DFGT, but that was a few weeks ago. It's a good wheel though a bit noisy

I've always wondered if there was a way to make it a bit quieter because that's my only "problem" with the wheel.

I have ahd a Driving force GT and at first I didint like it but the more I drive it the more I like it. its works great I just had to get used to using a wheel since I have always been a Pad player.

Agreed.

Getting familiar to a wheel is the hardest/worst part of getting one IMO.

Well since it's a present, I' guessing you'd like to get something on budget.
The only wheels you should be looking at are those with 900 degrees of rotation.

On the cheaper range of these, you've got the Logitech DF GT and the Fanatec Carrera 911.
The main difference being, the DFGT is an official wheel for GT5, and it allows for on the fly adjustment of Break Bias as well as Traction Control. This will be very handy since everynew car one drives, has TC on 5. Thus making you going into the Driving Options each time.

The Carrera however comes with a clutch and an H-shifter, whic allows for more realism. But keep in mind that GT5 doesn't really support clutch, so it's absolutely not like in real life.
This feauture will however come in handy if your friend will be driving PC sims, as the more popular ones will have support.

Another thing is that, the DFGT has paddle shifters (buttons), and thry are much faster to change gears than having to press on the clutch and change gears. As far as I'm aware, the 911 doesn't have them.

When I was making the choice between these two a bit over a month ago, I went with the Logitech, as I prefered the paddles (and their speed advantage) over shifting manually, especially since I'm tired of doig that in real life.

There's the third option: you tell him your plan, and just suggest he gives extra money an you go together and buy a G27 or order a Fanatec GT3 and then he'll be a happy camper for years.

Fanatec GT3 w/clubsport pedals is very nice. You can adjust settings on the wheel to make it feel the way you want, and in particular you can adjust how far you have to turn the wheel to get maximum lock. Paddle shifters, but you can buy sequential or an H-shifter as an accessory.

It's a lot quieter than my old DF was too. The load cell brake is fantastic. My only GT5 problem is that I still haven't figured out how to/if you can make the clutch work.

I just looked up a review of the Carrera wheel and it does indeed have paddle shifters if that's the way you want to go. Also has adjustable rotation and settings. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

I own the DFGT and haven't run into any major problems. The pedals are cheap and lack sufficient resistance IMHO, but that can be fixed with a bungee cord.

Everyone who I've spoken to that has a Fanatec wheel loves it and wouldn't trade it for anything. I've gotten the same responses from G27 users.

I used a carrera for a couple months before i got my csp and gt3. It is a great starter wheel with a pretty large array of options. Linearity, deadzone and rotation included. It will also function with the abs vibration of the csp's. I forget what else it has as its been a couple months since i used it.
With the deal fanatec has right now for carrera and rennsport stand is a great deal for someone looking to get into the wheel market. If you were to build a cockpit later on the stand can be taken apart a within the cockpit. be used for some adjustability

You've a good few options & as you said money is no problem so you could look at the new Thrustmaster 500 (can't remember the proper name) it's also an official wheel for GT5 & I've yet to see a bad review for it, it's only compatible with PC & PS3 though.. Then there's the Logitec DFGT, also an official GT5 wheel, but as was mentioned the pedals are pretty poor (I had a DFP with the same pedals & they were rubbish) it is one of the cheapest wheels though.
I have a Logitec G25 & have no complaints whatsoever, I think it's a really good wheel in the mid-range price bracket.
All I know about the Fanatec wheels is that they have one (dunno which) that is compatible with PS3, PC & Xbox.
Lucky friend :)

My exact setup and i love it. That is also the wheel with xbox compatability as well.

The csp's are discussed endlessly. Nothing but good things to say.

The wheel is very smooth and quiet. The alcantara feels great on your hands even after several hours of racing.

My only real complaint is with the paddles. The top and bottom tips of the aluminum plates usually do not register the shift. Although it is very rare that you will be using the tips anyway.

Is the Fanatec gt3 rsv2 with clubsport pedals definitely compatible with PS3 & Xbox? I have a G25 & it's still going strong but it's not compatible with Xbox & I'm thinking of getting an Xbox for (whisper) Forza4 & I couldn't go back to playing with a pad.
Any idea if it works with a PC also?

It is all 3 system compatible. I too have been thinkin about a dirt cheap crap box for fm. But dont want to pay for live

LOL & Cheers. I know exactly how you feel, I'm still in two minds about it, I'll feel ripped off after getting online for free for so long.

Think about a belt driven wheel. It is smoother than a gear-driven wheel. I used a DFGT (gear-driven) wheel for a while but swapped it out for a Fanatec 911 GT3 RS along with ClubSport pedals. The GT3 RS has belts and three motors (I think). I am very impressed with it. Plus, I can change the turning lock from 900 degrees to 180 degrees. That works great with the gokarts. There is also no "dead-spot" in the wheel like there can be with the DFGT.

Forgot to mention the extra motors in the rim. They vibrate along with the brake pedal. Nice thing is being able to adjust when they vibrate.
Brakes lock up at 75% then set abs on wheel slightly below that. When your brake pedal and wheel start to vibrate then you areabout to lock em up. Unfortunately those motors do nothing for ffb.. so ffb is only handled by one motor..

I believe you have to go with the gt2 to get the compatibility with all three systems. I only play gt5 so the gt3 is all I need.

Yep you r right. It is the gt2. Had to look at my eheel. I really should know what kind of eheel i have. Dummy

Buddy has the Fancy Orange Fanatec with CSP pedals.

He has used my old G27 and new T500.

His review was basically. G27. Great wheel lacks some feel of the car compared to his Fanatec. Shifter is better on Logitech.

T500. He says is an incredible wheel. The feeling of control and connection is really really good compared to his Fanatec.

He liked my pedals on both. However I had and have them inverted to hang down like a real car. As well had a Nixom style mod my logitechs and have the real brake mod as well my own modifaction to T500 pedals.

Said the modded pedals are very similar to his. He did notice the smooth more steps from t500 pedals.

After using the T500 he is now wanting one buy says he will wait for the Elite so he use his pedals.

Oh we both own DFGT's too.

So if budget is priority DFGT!

If you got some extra to blow step up to the Fanatec.

If you got more and don't wanna wait to see what Fanatec is going to release this winter. Get the T500.

There is nothing better then the T500 for GT5 right now!

None of previous mentioned wheels are junk or worthless. All are excellent and the level of realism goes up with price.

Keep the pedals tilted with the help of some shoe boxes (if nothing better is in your sight).
Once they are tilted at about 30-40 degrees, you'll definetly feel the difference in pedal resistance.
It will also give you a more "natural" driving feel.
I advise you keep them towards your left foot, so that when you break, your foot completely coveres the pedal. This means that with your right foot you'll be pressing with your big toe (and the toe right next to it).
Mind you, your right knee will sore after a while, due to the extention & twist of your leg.

As far as I can tell, the motors in the Fanatec GT3 wheel rim itself do nothing but vibrate based on how far you are pushing the gas pedal, they don't respond to anything else, even on the PC where you can supposedly sync them with other things in the driver(which I think doesn't install correctly on mine, I can't browse for game locations). So I find them to be just an irritating way to make your hands hurt faster, I turn them off or way down.

The FFB as stated is great.

I've not yet even bothered to try figuring out the best way to attach those metal pieces to the paddles.

The Clubsports are excellent, I don't even need to take my shoes off to use them. I never notice the brake pedal vibration but I never use ABS. In rF it vibrates but only after you've so completely locked it up that there's no saving it anymore.
