What Driving Wheel are you using ?

I want to go out and get myself a wheel , but I'm not sure which one to go for

Can anyone point me to some reviews of steering wheels ?

Replies Appreciated

Welcome to GTP, cue!

Do a search on this board. Several of us have shared our experiences (Der Alta and I, at least).

If I were you I'd buy one somewhere that you can return it easily. Then, if you think you'll like it, return it anyway and buy a used one from eBay.

I use the Dual Shock sticks. I would only consider using a wheel if it actually felt like you were in a car. I guess that means getting a nice car seat and mounting the wheel/pedals in realistic positions. Then finding a way to translate the vibration motor signal into big motors that actually rumbled the seat/wheel itself.

Does this sort of thing exist? If I win the lottery, I will get one! Or I might build my own, just for the hell of it.

Hello cuefilez

i tried a wheel once.
it was pretty nice.
i think it was an MC2.
don't think i'll be buying one until we get to GT5, though.
a bit too much of an investment for just one game i'd be consistently using it with, i think.

Well, it does work with quite a number of PS2 games now (TOCA, WRC just as examples) and is also compatible with the PC (well, the GT Force, anyway).

wait! there are wheels that are compatible with both ps2 and pc???

The original GT Force wheel that came out for the PS2 at the same time as GT3 is a Logitech Formula Force steering wheel with blue colouring instead of red, and both hook up via a USB port.

Win98 onwards will recognise the GT Force as a Logitech Formula Force - all you need to do then is download the Wingman software from the Logitech site and you can tailor the force-feedback on the PC.

I can't vouch for the new PS2 wheel, which has the DS2 controls in the wheel handle, the Driving Force - there have been problems reported with this wheel by a number of forum members where you can't change gears when the wheel is at the extremes of its travel.

I have the GT Force, which when used with GT3 has a mysterious 'dropping out' problem which is apparently related to voltages - I know personally the incidence of this problem has fallen since the wheel got its own power point - and it has only ever happened on GT3 (but I think GT3 puts a lot more demand on the force-feedback abilities of the wheel than other games).

I regularly play Grand Prix 3, Colin McRae 2, Grand Prix Legends and a couple of other games on the PC with my wheel. Best $200 (Australian) I ever spent.

Thanx For Welcoming Me :-)

What's the difference between a rumble wheel and a force feedback wheel ? Can ayone tell me which brands are rumble wheels and which ones are force feedback enabled ?

Thanx

A rumble wheel is similar to the DualShock controller in that it just shakes to give you some feeling of impact. A force feedback wheel actually pushes the wheel one way or another, and the steering effort changes, in response to what the front wheels are doing.

All of the Logitech wheels are Force Feedback, as is the Momo. Don't know about any others but if the price is under $50 it's probably a rumble wheel unless it specifically says Force Feedback.

it wouldnt work really would it? :thatsodd:

I seriously doubt it would work, but stranger things have happened. What's the worst that could happen? It's a USB port - you're not going to kill your PS2 or the wheel.

indeed... might try it even tho it aint FF..

ever since i bought my logitech df wheel (about a month ago) i have never again used the ds2! well at least for driving, because you will need it to fine tune your cars :(
i get a lot more pleasure out of driving with the wheel :) . it was difficult at first but with some practice it actually improves your driving i think - specially if you drive real cars too (my son and my nephew are pretty hopeless with it...)
about the problems of the whell with gt3: i don´t use manual gear so i can't answer about the gear change problem but i think people can go round that problem by changing the config ... in gt3 the braking indicator during replay only shows about 75% breaking but i don't know for a fact if the car only breaks 75%.. one thing i know is that you dont have that problem in gt concept
one of the best things of using a wheel though is that with the pedals you get a lot more control of the throtle and of course it is a lot more realistic :)
