Hello all,

I tried a search but I got results that seemed to take a bit of a different angle. So the last time i played a racing game was GT3, which I would like to think I got to be at least better than average at. I went and bought GT5 because I was craving some GT action. I am pretty bad at racing because a number of factors. I know the fundamentals it the application that is killing me. I am trying to get better and I think it comes in a few phases such as

1) know tracks well so that you can anticipate turns and be a proactive driver as opposed to reactive (I think most my slips come from the unfamiliarity of tracks)

2) learn the braking distances for each car (especially applied to straightaway endings which put me in the sand the most)

3) Finally work on better corning and passing

Does my path seem to be the most effective? I am trying to learn the tracks mostly then focus on rough breaking distances for each car before I really try and improve my cornering ability? Also how do you reccomend remembering when to start breaking on a long straigtaway with no good landmarks to sigal? I cannot seem to get it down. Thanks!

I am pretty familiar with the racing line, I guess by improving cornering and passing I meant from a perspective as I am at the correct speed and can fine tune it to shave time off as opposed to taking it on the line in a rough manner. Though I did forget that it seems to be helpful with breaking IIRC. Thanks!

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Works for me. Also, you have to get in a flow. I just finished the FGT championship. At first my laps were terrible, so I quit, did some practice sessions and the started the championship up again. I won every race by at least 5 seconds. Eventually it became almost muscle and auditory memory as to when to do certain actions such as braking turning etc. You almost go into a trance. Then combine that trance with focus and you are going fast.

Oh, NEVER use the driving line that game provides. It is the SAFEST line not the fastest. IMO you should find your own line. Everyone has a particular style of driving. If you look at the telemetry of Schumacher vs Häkkinen, there is a distinct difference. This difference means your line will different. The line you take also depends on the car.

Braking early is always better than braking late. Eventually, you will develop an intuition for it, even without experience with specific tracks. I think it's much more important to know how well your specific car brakes than remembering when to brake on each track.

The most popular philosophy in racing is "Slow in, fast out".

Brake in, make the turn, accelerate out of the turn. Try not to take on the turn as quickly as possible. Instead find the best angle to take the turn (usually over the Apex), go into the turn slow/with precision, and accelerate out.
