Simple solution is don't bother. Most people will turn their noses up at loud but otherwise stock cars. It will also make the car a nightmare on long trips on the motorway/highway and after a while you will learn that sounding fast just attracts the wrong sort of attention.

He's got a point. If you have a cheap ($2500?) car that has aftermarket exhaust, it seems like you half asses your car and/or are a poser.

EDIT: Exhaust size is what matters. The actual pipe diameter. If you get a pipe that's too big for your car it'll sound like crap and (some say) could have a negative effect on performance.

Think of it this way. I have 2.25 inch exhaust. I'll need 2.5"-3" when I start making 500hp+. In other words, don't just slap on the biggest tube you can find.
 
Worth noting that Zenith has two pipes of 2.25" diameter. My car would be happy with (one) 3" if I wanted to put up with the noise.

There are proven dyno gains on stock ka24de engines with 3 inch exhausts over a 2.5 inch, and that's a stock 2.4 liter engine. High revving 2 liters can also make use of a 3 inch exhaust.
 
It would sound like crap though. If it's boosted, it wouldn't be as loud since the turbo kinda muffles the noise a little. 3" exhaust on N/A's are loud, raspy, and unless they have a huge resonator, and a good muffler, they sound like crap.

Tip's itself make a difference though. The exhaust on my car was hacked at the rear subframe. I had a little pipe bent and welded on a magnaflow tip and it sounds way nicer.
 
Probably no bigger than 2.25" piping, and tip size just shows how much of a ricer you're wanting to be...Mine's a 4" outlet but comes out of a normal style muffler, not an N1 style/fartcan/coffee can like most are.
 
I have dual 2.25 or 2.5 inch pipes, ending in a 4 inch tips. Tips are for looks only. But bigger ones normally look better. It's a proportion thing really

Depends on the car really. To make use of a 3 inch exhaust on a smaller engine like a N/A 2 liter, the gains would be higher up in the rpm range, which is where the normal powerband is on smaller engines anyway, so in the normal rpm range for regular city driving you might not see any gains, or losses even, you will see plenty of gains at higher rpms, which you're only going to see if you're trying to go faster anyway.

Yeah I forgot that bit of info. In my head I was picturing those little B16 hondas with a 3" straight pipe.

My car was actually a little louder after I put my tip on. But then again, the exhaust was dumping underneath the car to begin with.

Not really. Just because it's the same engine doesn't necessarily mean parts will fit. Kinda like the FWD SR20 family and the RWD SR20 family. Some might, but I'd go researching it.
 
I skunk 2 a good reliable brand (wear and tear/ sound quality)

What car? Skunk2 exhaust is generally very loud. I have a Vibrant catback on my Civic. Definitely a nicer, deeper tone than most exhausts.
 
My car's engine is a 1.3, but I'm probably going to have my axle back made from 3-inch piping. I haven't done any research on it, but my theory is this. The rotary pumps out a tremendous volume of exhaust, similar to a small V6, and at high temps. It's gotta go somewhere.
 
I've tried it open header, but I value my hearing and everybody else's. I've tried to make a video of it but the cam's microphone can't handle the volume unless I'm standing 50 feet away.
 
Haha. For some reason I didn't run the Civic open header when we installed that. I just wanted to be done after wrestling with it.

A buddy followed me down the highway to the exhaust shop. Usually it backfires when you lift at high rpm - open header it sounds like a grenade going off under the car. You know those big fireworks you can feel in your chest? Yeah.

We had dinner with another friend that night, and he told us that he saw us going down the highway while he was paving a parking lot. Said he heard some loudass car coming down the highway, saw us cruise past, and was like hey I know those guys! His coworker came over and said, "Damn dude, that car is LOUD." I really do wish I could share the noise with you guys because it's absolutely astounding. Greasers and their rods have got nothing on my noise.

How could this not have been answered in one of the other threads you started asking basically the same thing?

It's one thing not using the search function, it's another not even using your own threads...

It's really not and I would really appreciate it if you would stop posting the same thing on every one of my threads. The reason I keep asking is because I have not found a clear answer to my question even using my childhood automotive experiences, and honors language arts throughout middle school where I learned advanced reading comprehension strategies. This is also my first car so...
 
You can call me on this one but I don't remember posting in any of your threads before, but I've read about a dozen of them.

You do not need a new thread for every muffler query you have. Threads update when you post in them so posting in one of the others would have exactly the same effect, only without irritating other members.

If you want it to be louder then yea this should do the job.

As for sounding decent. That's personal opinion.

Also I recommend doing mods for HP and not looks and sound.

So with that get a good cat back exhaust. Save until you can afford one. Plenty used stuff out there. If it's stainless steel. You got no worries buying used really.

Good luck! Personally I would put money into tires/wheels, suspension, and brakes first. Once you lay down a foundation like that. You can build on top of it. In the end you will have a package deal that makes you very pleased to drive. ;)
