Stop the car on the road side...

how pointless would that be in a racing simulator

In a racing simulator, pointless. In a driving simulator, not a bad little "feature". I'd have NO desire to do this in FM3 but in this game it wouldn't be a bad thing to do once or twice. Especially if they had period specific radios and simulated sounds AND I could stream a playlist or something.

Imagine the radio cut to certain radio broadcasts during the period and car of the day. Example: Imagine you pull up in your '63 Corvette Coupe and turned the radio on August 28 and heard Dr Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" Speech. Or you parked to the side in your 69 Charger on July 20th and heard the first moon landing on the radio.

What sets GT5 apart from all other games is that it is a driving simulator intended to give you the most accurate driving experience with the cars and tracks/roads available in the game, as if it was in the "real world". That's the essence of GT, everything else in the game (such as racing, or car collecting, or whatever) is secondary to the fundamental goal of the game. This is what GT is, and all other games are NOT.

This is pretty obvious. GT5 is not a racing game. If it was a racing game it would be a really bad racing game. Instead, it's a great simulator, the best ever made.

Driving can be many things... and there can be many contexts to what we call "driving experience". Obviously PD could not put everything "driving" in the game, it's not possible. But that does not stop me from dreaming about the perfect Driving Simulator (and yes, it would certainly include some racing in it). I'm sure we'll get there some day...

You can put it as beautifully as you like, but unfortunately that doesn't mean you aren't completely off your rocker.

Just wait for Test Drive 2 and live the dream baby 👍

... turn off the engine. Listen to the car stereo... look through the windows, maybe open the side window and just hear the sound of "the world" outside... watch the other cars go by, and just relax for a minute in my car.

Then, radio OFF, turn on the engine, and go.

I would like to do that in GT5 :)

dictionary.com
to cause and guide the movement of (a vehicle, an animal, etc.): to drive a car; to drive a mule.

Doesn't say anything about parking on the side of the road and listening to the Bee-Gees...

dumb. go do that in real life.

By the way, I've been to plenty of road racing tracks, and you wind down the window while the cars go past, you can't hear ANYTHING but the sound of those cars! Even with ear plugs in!

So much for the sounds of nature (or the radio, even!)...:dopey:

But hey! Anything to put an end to this lunacy!

Go buy a CD of 'ambient', nature sounds. Field sounds, cows mooing, crickets chirping, bubbling brook sounds, whatever. Import it to the game as BGM. Go out in Arcade mode, Time trial (or if you just want to hear the occasional car, a light field of beginner slow cars) on the Nordschliefe, or Eiger, or anywhere you prefer. Pull off to the side where you feel like it. Cut the engine. Look to the left, look to the right. Look to the rear, look ahead.

Nature sounds, beautiful scenery, the odd car going by.

There, now you have your wish!

You're welcome....

most people play it as a racing game...
...Uh huuuuh...and why do you suppose that is, self-proclaimed enlightened one of GT?

They call it a real driving simulator because that's the only part of the game they have nailed down. Racing (as in, involving other cars, notably AI) is heavily flawed. Anyways, I'm sure others would enjoy a puff of whatever you're smoking, so you may be welcomed to stick around.

No, they call it the "The Ultimate Driving Entertainment Experience"

It is neither 'Ultimate' nor 'entertaining'. But hey! It's got great driving physics (but not the 'ultimate'...)

These are all quotes from the GT5 product page:
GT Life
Immerse yourself in racing as you work on your career, purchase new cars, connect with friends, and more. It all starts here.

B-spec
Take the role of a racing team director to coach and manage a stable of AI drivers.

Special Events
Learn the ropes of a variety of racing disciplines under the guidance of famous race car drivers and more in special driving challenges.

Arcade Mode
Pick a car and track for a quick racing fix alone or with a friend using 2-player split-screen, or burn some rubber in the Drift Trial mode.

Visual Effects
Time and weather changes create dramatic vistas and change the dynamics of the race. Cutting-edge smoke and lighting effects add another layer of dimension and realism.

Now, will you ALL get off this 'driving' fixation? This is a RACING GAME...

I didn't know ZERO was considered a variety. I like this one because, unless I'm missing something, they don't teach you squat in those special events. I'm still a complete noob at rally racing in this game and I have literally NOT progressed at all in that discipline. I need help badly and sure could use some of that "famous race car drivers" guidance.

I'll have what your smoking. It must be good

Just putting it out there. But I dont see the words ultimate, entertainment or experience anywhere. Prettysure they just call it the real driving simulator.

Once again..read into that whatever you will. Im just bringing it to the table and putting it out there.

IF it's in online free roam style like Kaz mention a long time ago, it's okay i guess...

remember that time when ayrton senna pulled over in the middle of the 1989 monaco GP, giving up the win so he could listen to "free bird" on the radio?

:P

Yeah, wasn't it just down from Casino?
(What a tune!)

Its like saying you want to own a Ferrari so you can roll down the windows and listen to the stereo.... No, if you want to do that buy a Ford Mondeo; or in this case Test Drive Unlimited.

Not really. I've been to several race tracks, had great fun driving, but never raced at all. I don't care for racing, I love driving. That's why I love GT5 (and all before that), the Real Driving Simulator. And this is why, as part of the driving experience (not racing) it would be nice to be able to to the things I mentioned in the first post of this topic. I'm sure they (PD) would make it if they could... they love cars :)

Why don't you go outside and do that? People play racing video games because they want to race a car, like they can't do in their day to day lives...whereas it is very easy to go outside and enjoy the real world...don't need a video game to do that. Turn off the TV and go enjoy the world...you will be happy you did instead of looking at computer generated trees from a computer generated car.

Put the controller down. Turn off the console and your computer. Stand up. Go outside.

The "world" you're looking for in a video game? It's right outside your door.

You don't need a driving simulator to do this. ;)

I'm absolutely dumbfounded that this thread even exists. Sergio, where do you get your drugs? It seems like you got your paws on some top level stuff, bro.

If you want to drive a car, turn off the radio, roll down the window, step outside and take a leak, come back in, drive to the gas station and fill up, go run some errands, whatever the hell you want to do...

Just go do that for real!! Are you serious about this stuff? You don't need a PS3 to roll down a damn window! The whole point of the game is that you get to drive and race in cars on tracks that you would otherwise never get the opportunity to. There are few people in the world that scoff at the Veyron in their real-life garage, whereas people regularly roll their eyes at it in this game.

C'mon man, please tell me that you're joking!

Do you really think I need to make stuff up to make a point?

Now, take it off the table and put it back where you got it from... :)

Or, you could play The Sims and do that, return your copy of GT5 back to the game store, and let someone who will appreciate the game for what it was intended for buy it used.

I'm dead serious...

I don't need GT5 to drive a car (or race for that matter). Why would I play GT5 then?

What are you talking about? I love this game and the fact that it makes me feel like it's the "real thing" is testament to that and the only reason why it makes me want to do things in it just like I would in the real world. It's an amazing game and I've been using exactly as intended. I just wish I could have MORE of it :)
