and then washing petrol out of my hair because I stupidly forgot that fuel filter = fuel lines with fuel in them.

Haha, but much better than washing it out of your eyes.

Just out of curiosity, did you ever get it in your eyes? it actually dried out my scalp and when i've had it on my hand it does the same to my skin.

Yes, in my eyes and mouth in my younger carefree auto years, not nice. I wear glasses now when pulling fuel lines off or if I am too lazy to get them I just turn my head as I pull off the hose.

Still get plenty on my hands but that doesn't bother me I just wash it off. Acetone is much worse, don't get that on your skin (I hate using it).

Fuel filter? that's like what, 4 screws, and maybe 2 clamps in a relatively easy to reach spot? Granted, it's probably more of a hassle then most other cars out there, but I'm so used to bending like a contortionist to work under the dash and deep in the engine bay I'm pretty used to it.

I had to replace the supercharger in that cramped little engine bay, that was a pain in the ass.

Did you own an MK1 (sc?) or were you helping someone?

No its not in an easy to reach its between the engine and the firewall and if the bracket it broken (it was for me) its a pain because there are two hard lines that are held to the fuel filter by what are called banjo fittings and without the bracket you can't brake the fitting loose easily. Oh and be sure to use new copper gaskets on the fittings because if you don't it will leak like a sieve.

And I used to work in a repair shop and had to change a fuel filter on a supercharged MK1. It was a fun car to drive although 1st gear is over way to fast IMO.
