I suspect many of you have not heard about this game. so I will now explain what it is. Stranded deep is another indie game built on the unity engine. Its a survival but the key point is there's no zombies HURRAH!!!
Its you versus the environment. for some people that may not sound good, almost everything want to kill you. co-op is in the pipeline for those more interested in pvp
My first island
Starting equipment
When you start there will be a quick tutorial on crafting while in a plane, but other than the game won't hold your hand. The crafting is simple and for me slightly more realistic. To make something you have gather all the bits together. Then click and hold with the right tool. The devs have provided on steam aload of starter recipes, but its up to you to discover more.
This for me is a welcome change from many of the recent releases. This means that while its initially frustrating there is large amount of satisfaction when you discover something new. the game all brings some another aspect to the game.
The first stage was to create this type of fire so water could be purified and food cooked
This required one large (12 wood) and small tree (4 wood) so tools could be made.
Sustainability
While yes its a long word, its something that will heavily affect your lifespan. i've seen many people build bases and with walls and roofs but the thing is each island has a finite amount of wood. wood plays a vital role as almost every recipe needs it. This small game design has massive effects on the game.
To get wood sticks you need to:
chop down tree->chop trunk into logs->chop logs into sticks.
This not only reduces the lifespan of tools but it affects your vitals as well.During my second life i chopped down all the trees to build a base. but this lead to me be killed at sea in the quest for more wood. had i not built a fancy base i may have survived longer.
8 medium-large trees were required to build this only two small trees are left
The Sea
The water is not just you friend but also your enemy in many ways. it holds vital supplies such as small fish and shipwrecks however sharks are also prevalent. this means that every time you enter the water you risk not returning. so far i have only died once from the shark, the others have been from exploring wrecks and drowning.
The top of mast indicates a wreck is below
These small ships may contain one or two lootable items.
This ship had lots of good stuff onboard
various items obtained from looting and crafting. here we see a lighter, bucket, hammer, paddle, pocket knife, torch, bandages and crafted axes and spear.
Summary
while this is only in alpha the game is extremely fun and rewarding to play. the game will provides a learning curve as each death will provide you with more knowledge on the do's and donts. At £10.99 this alpha is good value. I would urge you to take a serious look as if this game does well it may help other devs stop producing other zombie type survival games.
Thankyou for reading and happy hunting.
