Yay! My first actual Thread! Sorry if there is another thread like this. I searched :indiff:.

Back on topic:
Yes, I know the screenshots are different from that of the final game because PD started working on the manual before the final version was finished.

But, why there are alternate screenshots isn't the entire point of this thread. The point is to figure out stuff like: What was the point of making the original menu like this? why was it changed? Why was this the original title for this option? stuff like that. Or, you could simply guess why this or that was changed or removed.

In a nutshell, just talk about any strange text or screenshots in the manual.

To get the conversation started, open up the manual to page 26, or click on this if you don't have the manual (sorry about how it's only in black and white :indiff:) and go to page 15: http://www.emuparadise.me/roms/psx/Gran%20Turismo%202/Gran_Turismo_2_-_Manual_-_PSX.pdf

Notice how the "Go Race" menu in the manual is completely different from the final version of the menu. Why did PD change the layout of the menu? why is the logo for the GT League different? why did they change it?

EDIT: Moderators, can you fix the grammar errors in the title of this thread? I just woke up when I made it :dunce:.

Strange that nobody noticed this before until now... I have the NTSC version and it mentions drag racing in there, even though it was cut.

It does? I don't see it. What page is it on?

It's probly not on the PAL version like yours since it is a later version.

I don't have the PAL version, I have the NTSC greatest hits version (1.2). but the greatest hits version is (obviously) still a later version, so that could be why I'm not finding it.

EDIT: wait a second, If PD was able to edit and change the manual after the release of the game, proven by the fact that they eliminated text mentioning drag racing, why didn't they change the screenshots too? :odd:

Judging by the front i thought it was PAL. Mine is NTSC 1.2 and it has a drag racing reference in there. It should be on page 35.

strange, I looked on that page and I didn't see it. By the way, it wasn't me who scanned the manual in that link.

I checked both my manual and the one in the link. didn't see it.

Mine is the "Greatest Hits" version, could have something to do with that, i'll make a picture and post it here. (if i can figure out how)
EDIT: im looking through a reference manual, is that what your looking through? Does it say it on the front?

Well that might be it, if you have a reference manual look in page 35 and you'll find it. Here is a zip folder with the pictures i was telling you about.

Strange. Even the official Gran Turismo website says something about drag racing (near the end of the first paragraph):http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/products/gt2/

I don't know why PD never fixed any of these references to drag racing, especially this one.

If you notice, there are differences (mainly) between the Simulation section of the manual and the Simulation Mode itself. For example, look at page 21 of the manual: is shows what probably looks like another Go Race menu (it has similarities from the GT1 Go Race menu). Also, look at page 23: in the third tab it says "COPYRIGHT" with a big copyright logo on it, but in the final version is says "Licenser Credits" with a trophy. And lastly, in page 22, below the map, it says "Welcome to The GT World!!", whereas the final version it shows the GT2 logo with their "Real Simulation" motto.

Good job t3hgt3ftw1n! But, there are some other differences in the simulation section too: On the screenshot next to the "Purchasing A Car" section on page 21 in the user manual (not the reference one), the screen that appears when viewing a skyline in the "new" section looks completely different, with the biggest difference being the two bar things on the bottom left corner, on top of the exit logo. Are those supposed to measure performance?

The logo for the "Tune-Up Shop" in the Mazda dealer on page 24 says "Mazdaspeed" instead of just "Tune".

I'm pretty sure there are more differences, too.

Thats down right strange right there! They didn't even change it on there on website!?!? Odd...

Yea i seen that to

There are even more things like that on that page you posted.:sly:

I had a look through the manual of my copy of GT2, and couldn't find anything related to earlier version screenshots.

They may have either realised about the screenshots, or decided to just not put much effort in and not include a lot of screenshots.

It could be that they added "Drag Racing" as a mode in the website before they abandoned the project mid-way, hence why we have two lonely dragsters and a completely unfinished track whose name is still debated to this day :sly:.

I wasn't going to find everything, right?

That's weird, what version of the game do you have (PAL, NTSC 1.0, etc.)?

If is this is correct, then why didn't PD delete the text mentioning drag racing after the final game was actually released?

I found some more interesting stuff:

On the screenshot of the "Save Game" screen on page 14, the two boxes on the bottom center of the screen say "MEMORY CARD 1" and "MEMORY CARD 2" instead of slot 1 and slot 2.

On page 10, the simulation and arcade mode disks look completely different from the final ones. Why did PD change it? That RX-7 on the sim mode disk looks awesome...

The turbo, or "Boost" gauge on page 11 also looks different and reminds me of the one in the Pizza Hut demo.

I'd love to ask Kaz that myself. I seen a video on one of the GT2 demos and it was a video interview with him before it came out and he said there was going to be drag racing in the game with places like laguna seca and such, he talked like it really was going to happen, but it didn't.:indiff: Any clue as to why it didn't make it?

It didn't happen because Kaz and the gang weren't able to finish making the Drag mode before the release date, so they had to cut it out of the game. There were a large amount of things cut out due to time restraints. Believe it or not, SSR11 was actually supposed to be in GT2!

The time restraints also explain why the NTSC 1.0 version is unfinished-looking and has a large amount of glitches :).

Found some more things: on page 21, if you notice the picture with the Skyline on it, the car's title is positioned to the top left instead of the top center, and the car is positioned almost halfway to the right instead of the middle.

Also, on page 20, under Communications, it says:

Communications
Use Communication to combine time records or buy and sell cars between two MEMORY CARDS. Insert the MEMORY CARDS containing games in both MEMORY CARD slots 1 and 2. You can also load license data from the original "Gran Turismo" game to exempt you from taking license tests.

Is this true?

There are screenshots of it in the thread "Searching Evidence of Hidden Things".

Just checked and it's called "Data Transfer". It's located at the bottom of the main menu.

ah, ok

I found another difference on page 17: their is no video that previews the track you're highlighting playing on the left side.

On the screenshot of the "My Home" menu in page 23, their is a darker version of the home icon next to the word "My" in "My Home" that is not in the final game.

Did anyone else find anything?

Well to be honest people complain about games getting delayed all the time, but really it's for a good cause otherwise it would be like GT2 1.0, glitchy!Frankly i think PD would have been better off delaying the game then rushing it.:indiff: Frankly im under the idea that time restraints was why alot of cars and tracks like Eiger Path never made it, theres more hidden stuff in GT2 than any other GT game to date. To be honest i don't think all 1.0 copies are glitchy, some actually work just fine, heck i got 2 copies of 1.0 that i have had for years and i've never had problems with any of them. However i have seen the car wash glitch as well as that license thing with the muscle car cup but never have i had the garage thief thing to happen to me. Frankly i think i may have later copies of 1.0, the ones that are not so glitchy.
It is, but if I remember right, the feature is not called "Communications".
I think in the PAL or NTSC-J version it says "Communications", but not in the NTSC.

This is pretty stupid question, but what is this SSR11 you speak of?:indiff:
Another thing, This is slightly off topic, but in data transfer, what is that convert feature and what does it do?

I have the PAL copy, it was released later than the US and Japan games, so it's understandable that things like that would get removed.

Yea your right, it's release date was in early 2000, while the rest were in late 1999. The PAL version is probly the least glitchy out of all them.

Ya, GT2 would of been even more legendary of a game if it wasn't rushed. And if your copy isn't that glitchy, yet you still see the car wash and muscle car cup glitch, I think you might have version 1.1.

Special Stage Route 11 (SSR11) is a very awesome, beautiful track featured in GT1 and 3 (It was supposed to be in gt2, but like I said before, it was cut out due to time restraints). Unfortunately, it was not featured in any game after GT3 :(. Here are some videos on it:

No i know it's 1.0 because mine has Mark Martin's racing modification for the Taurus SHO while 1.1 and 1.2 don't.

Oh yea i remember that track! Never raced on it in GT1 but i did in GT3. Frankly i used to hate it in GT3 because it was so curvey, but that was my opinion a long time ago, i ain't played GT3 in 5 years so i've probly been missing out.:indiff:
