Strength needed for a wheel?

I'm getting a DFGT tomorrow and I was wondering what kind of power you actually have to have to drive with this thing. I'm a 15-year old guy, about 5' 10" and a little on the skinny side but I think I have decent arm strength. Never actually driven a car but I could probably get used to it quick enough (however long that is). But anyway, I was reading some of the stuff people have written on here about how much the wheel jerks and all that and I'm started to get a little intimidated. I might just be worrying for nothing but I was wondering, about how much force do you have to put into controlling the wheel?

You don't have to worry about the DFGT. I have a 10 year old brother using it just fine. However, driving the X2010 with the DFGT is quiet a workout after a certain period of time, especially going 280mph plus with it.

Different cars and tire compounds may require more work than others, but as long as you got a steady mounting platform, you should be ok. If you find it difficult, or maybe not strong enough, you can adjust the force feedback strength in the wheel options to suit your preference or abilities. Have fun.

I too have that same dilemma, I am a DS3 user and I'm having problems about just how much strength in needed to cope with a Force FeedBack wheel.

I am also a "15-year old guy, about 5' 10" and a little on the skinny side with decent muscle mass."
:)

my kitten uses it as a tread mill, every so often when it spins to lock we have to get the ladder and un claw her from the ceilling..............

its fine, i just got the formula gt car and the grip of the tyres on the road is the strongest i've felt yet

when i race the gt and leman cars around nuremburgring it does give my tummy a work out as thats some frantic driving

I love setting the force feedback to 10 and driving the ring in a f10 indy car.

After playing for a while you will want to have a frantic driving experience every now and then :P

Start with a lower Force Feedback setting and just get used to it

Once you start driving cars with more HP (FGT, F1, stuff like that) then you will know what to set it at

I have mine around 8-9 usually on Simulation and it's hella fun now that I got the hang of it :)

Relax guys, it won't tear your arms off

Just start with a low FFB setting and work your way up. You don't need any real strength to handle a wheel. They can get a little rough on the higher settings, but the worst that'll happen is your arms, more specifically your shoulders will ache a little after a while.

The guy in my avatar says invest in a set of dumbells anyway. Chicks dig the guns 👍

I cant wait to get back on my DFGT. I banged up my ribs and tore all the rib wall muscles on my left side. I havent been able to use my DFGT more then a half dozen times since I got it for Xmas, and even then, I had to be heavily medicated.

bawls

Are you guys really worried about the FFB strength of the DFGT?? I'm keeping it at 6 and it's still quite easy to keep it straight, maybe after 2 hrs straight I can feel my arms a bit tired, but that's a good thing IMHO :D!

The DFGT is not bad at all as far as tension on the wheel. I have a DFGT and a PWTS I drive the DFGT at 10 and would like to go to 20 after using the PWTS at 5 for a while.

DFGT is pretty effortless at default settings in most cars. The Fanatec PWTS will hurt you if you're not careful almost like the real thing.

My 10 year old nephew struggled with the G27 on Daytona! Ended up in a cannon-roll on the STRAIGHT with the GTR V-Spec.

You need to simply be accustomed to the experience with the wheel, at first most people would also find that lap times are faster with the DS3 compared to the wheel, but with a little more experience lap times will improve, it's almost like learning to play the game all over again (but not to that extreme!), especially considering you do not have experience driving IRL either.

I tend to the FFB strenght low so that it's subtle. When I drive my car the wheel doesn't fight me. It's power steering.

Is it more realistic to set it hight? Is there some advantage to it?

I have mine set on two, it is a nuisance the FFB when you first start driving with it but you do get used to it.

Only thing I don't like about the DFGT is that it refuses to let you catch a spin, so you will spin out every time you come close to even initiating one, it is fun with the wheel, I'm just not as fast as I was with a controller, now with a wheel I lean more towards enjoying the drive over winning the race, which online isn't a problem anyway.

We're not exactly talking deadlifting here chaps. You first run at it may make your forearms a little tired and even tender the day after but you will adapt and gain strength from doing so.

It's far less fatiguing than gokarting anyhoo, 15mins of that is more intense than anything else my left arm ever endures.

Ha! So true; did this for a day and seriously couldnt lift my bottle of coke anymore!

@ OP: Dont worry about it; youll do fine. If anything; it will make you stronger in your arms; which is a positive right? Also; racing with a wheel (and drifting even more) is so much more fun then with the controller. It will take you a while of intense practice to get used to it and match the times you did with the controller, but you will get it!

Get a wheel; go pro!
