Stupid GT5 in game censorship word list

I use WAAAASUUP as my welcome message into online servers and it comes out like this... W****SUUP... as if AAAA is censored!

Just use numbers and symbols in place of letters. This is why they invented 1337 in the first place - so that 12 year old kids could swear at each other in chatrooms without upsetting the adults :D

Can't say 'retard' either (or retarded).

I think the censoring of engine maybe because it is very close to injin, term that Europeans and early settlers of the Americas used for Native Americans.

I'm seriously considering of writing in japanese (with kana/kanji) because it doesn't seem to be as censored (if at all) as languages using the latin alphabet. There were occasions in which I've been almost completely unable to communicate in english, as the system was censoring entire phrases (especially if relatively long. I use a keyboard).

I know it seems silly, but in fairness to SONY the game is rated as safe for 3 year olds (It's a 3+ here in the UK).

More debatable is whether a 3 year old can read or not but hey ho...

Online isn't rated by ESRB. Also, it's supposed to be a real driving sim and I can't ****ing swear; what is this, England?

This is funny. Obviously they just got a big list of every possible offensive word and blocked it with out any thought at all.

It does fit in quite well with the PD online design philosophy though.

Not sure who came up with the awesome coding of censoring the chat in GT5, but someone should give him an award. If SONY or PD is reading this, I would like to find out what is your logic, if there is any. Also I would like to find out what you guys are doing to censor voice chat since that is really a much bigger problem than censoring words like "engine" in a game about cars and racing. :dunce:

Please add what you find.

Censored words:
  • engine - green initiative? LOL
  • Tsukuba - yeah, the circuit
  • LSD - as in Limited Slip Differential
  • lulz - means dick in Dutch...
  • dirt - as in dirt tires
  • pitting - as in pitting in
  • ss - any word containing "ss", as in Camero ss = censored
  • magic - sorry Disney
  • nicht starten ("don't start" in German) - nicht means gay men in Dutch...
  • hora ("hour" in Spanish) - They are only allowed to live in minutes
  • junkies - as in speed junkies
  • joint, puff, roll

LSD is a drug.. A joint is a smoke/ cigarette/ roll.. The third last word on the list is also a female prostitute in (in a offensive way) definite form in Norwegian.

They got you fooled man.

It is not there is protect kids, it is there to protect THEM, the developer/publisher, so that they don't get sued when someone got offend when they were ask "what size is your engine?" 👍

It is a well-known slur against Japanese people to ask them the size of their engine.:P

Really? Censorship is fundamentally wrong. It is the unneccessary restriction of language and of thought. It is a pointless exercise in impracticality forcing people to come up with their own words which others may not understand. It stems from centuries of moral conditioning stemming from religious ideas, which in reality has no bearing on anything at all! Banning words because somebody somewhere might be offended is cutting off your ear despite your face; being offended is not everyones problem, it is the individuals problem. People need to get thicker skin.

It's not the word, its the context that counts. This is true 100% of the time. I cannot believe Gran Turismo of all things has succombed to the sapper of human spirit and the restriction of freedom that is language censorship. For shame.

Just FYI, this is a problem with the Playstation Network in General, not GT5. Little Big Planet similarly censors words like this, just because they have parts of other dirty words (or dirty slang in other languages). It really is crazy, but it's not PD's fault. Here's a similar list of words that are censored in LBP.

This thread needs more updating...

Someone out there who speaks whatever language FICA is bad in, please fill us in.

modiFICAtion
qualiFICAtion
classiFICAtion

And yes, it's a PSN censor; PD has nothing to do with it.
