Yes, once again, it's a problem with that damn laptop again. I won't go into my previous issues with this toshiba laptop, but recently, i've had to reinstall the system three times, and i'm still having problems.

Well, it's had errors that needed to have the system reinstalled, but they are solved, so i'll say what is wrong.

Well, i can be on any program, whether it a web browser, an IM, a media player, or a word proccessor. What happens is, that the program freezes, and up comes a little egg timer you normally get when opening something. Now, this would be normal, if i was opening a huge document, but that's not what i'm doing when it happens What i'm doing, is something as sutble as scrolling down a bit. The whole program jamms, and if i want to close it, i get the annoying "this program is not responding" error. It's not just one program. I've gone through 5 different web browsers to solve this problem, and neither firefox, firefox in safe mode, internet explorer, msn explorer, netscape, or opera will solve it. But when it turns up in msn messenger, it's when i am typing. I can be typing something, and then it just jamms. This gets really annoying, as the bursts last for atleast 10 seconds, an appear ever 30 seconds. That means in the time i am normally on the laptop, this happens A LOT.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: And it gets so frik'n frustrating!

I've now got so p****ed off with it, that i just call up pcworld every time it happens, and complain. And i mean, everytime it happens. Yes, pcworld get a phonecall every 30 seconds from me with complaints. But, everytime i call them, i am somehow persuaded that "it's the software that i am using's fault, and not my laptop's.". I think this happening with about 15 different programs might just possibly mean that it's not actually the programs. Just to prove it, i've downloaded and installed them all AGAIN, and they still don' pay any attention to me. They won't give me a replacement, unless they cannot fix it themselves. When they say fix it, they really mean "if we can't make it turn on". If by some miracle i do get a replacement because they can't fix it, i then have to pay for the £500 insurance again. :ouch::ouch::ouch::ouch::ouch::ouch::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Can anyone figure out what is wrong with the frick'n thing?

It's a Toshiba Equium A60 157

Pentium 4 3.20ghz

512mb ram

Any help is appreciated, as i am quite tempted to throw this thing out of a window, and replace it with a cheaper desktop.

Can you get some kind of enginneer or someone out to take a look at it? It would be worth a try. Then he might be able to prove to PC World that something it wrong with it. It may cost you a bit of money, but it's cheaper than buying that £500 insurance.

Sorry if this doesn't help. Your problems make my Laptop seem reliable.

I might do that. Pcworld insurance would believe it more if somebody from pcworld told them it aswell.

Standard235: believe me, i'd love to get a new pc. That's how i feel every day when i turn this hunk o crap on. This is only a few months old, and cost £1000 new, so i don't think it'll be replaced by a desktop THAT quick. If pcworld eventually give in, i'm spending my vouchers on a desktop, believe me.

By "reinstall the system" do you mean reformatting and wiping the drive completely clean or just putting in the Windows disc and hitting install?

If its the latter, I suggest that you:

Format. Reinstall.

I just recently fixed another co-worker's laptop. Serious Windows boot problems, way past BSOD, more like: I'm not even going to try BSOD.

I formated the hard disk and guess what? No problems.

Like VTGT07 said, if you only stick in the Windows disc and hit install rather than wiping the hard drive clean, then you should do the latter and wipe everything off. That should solve your problems. From what I'm hearing, it seems like that your computer is infested with adware and spyware, possibly even viruses, trojans and worms. Those malwares are continuously running in the background, taking up CPU power that could otherwise be used by the programs that you are running. Enough of them CAN cause your computer to freeze and crash.

If you do need to format your hard drive, I would recommand that after you reinstall Windows, you go out and buy anti-virus if you don't have it already. Keep your Windows system updated with Windows Update. Also you should get a firewall and also anti-adware/anti-spyware programs. There are some really good firewalls and anti-adwares available online for free. For the firewall, I recommand using ZoneAlarm and the anti-adwares I recommand using Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Keep all those updated, and scanning your computer often would keep your computer clean and running well.

Hope this helps and good Luck with fixing your computer.

Downlad SP1 and SP2 on a disc. Install them before you connect to internet

AVG Free too

It is ne of the best Antivirus programs out there.

You only need to download Service Pack 2 (SP2) onto a disc because the original Windows XP IS Service Pack 1. This actually depends on how new your computer is though. If you bought your computer within the past several months, the chances are it's already XP SP2. If it's not, you can download it or you can order the SP2 disc from Microsoft for free.

To check whether you have SP1 or SP2, right click on My Computer and then left click on Properties. Then under the generals tab, it should say if it's SP2 or not.

Ok, from where i see it you have a problem with your RAM - are you using Windows XP?

Anyway try this,

1. Go to the desktop
2. Right click My Computer and select properties
3. Go to the 'Advanced Tab'
4. Click 'Performance options'
5. Click to 'Change' the 'Virtual Memory' to min 1000mb and max to 2000mb

This will make a portion of your Hard Disk act as RAM memory, and if your computer starts working properly then you know you have a RAM problem.

Even in this situation it could be software problems with your PC causing this - i would strongly suggest you boot up from the Windows XP disc and format your Hard Disk then Re-install all drivers from disc.

Hope this helps, im prety sure it will.

Ok, thanks for the replies everyone! It's just been reinstalled it AGAIN (don't ask me, pcworld can't take a hint), as for the reformatting, i asked them whether they allowed it (yes, they are EXTREMELY touchy about what I do. Infact, they won't let me do anything apart from system restore and reinstall without me sending it back again. If i do do it without permission, i'm in jeopardy of loosing the £500 insurance. I've decided to abort this whole "send it back and we'll fiddle about with it" apporach, and just take it back to pcworld in the first place. It's still under their warranty, so in theory, i should be able to hand it back with the excuse that it's been back twice, and reinstalled over 7 times, done system resore about 20 times, and i'm sick of having problems when it's not even 5 months old. Who knows? maybe if they don't do it i might hrow it at them instead.

Ok, took it to pcworld today, and they agree that this shouldn't be happening. They can't take it back because it's over 28 days old, but they told me to force the insurance people t replace it, and not to get off the phone untill they agree. If they don't budge, then i get pcworld themselves to argue with them instead. If that still doesn't work, they suggest that i take a walk with it in the back garden, and "accidentally" drop it on the concrete. So i win eitherway! Yey!!

sod the insurance if they wont replace it. it OBVIOUSLY needs a format if it hasnt been formatted already. if it has been, then yes, introduce it to the floor

Well, called them AGAIN last night (that is the insurance people) and as usual "yeah, it's probably a software problem" was the excuse, despite pcworld say that it's an issue with the hdd (which would tie in with this reformatting). So, i'm going to take the advice of pcworld and get a member of their staff to argue down the phone with them. If that doesn't work i will introduce it to the concrete in our back garden.

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that all pointing devices have lost their drivers misteriously, as has every other thing i have installed.

When i went to buy a laptop i was advised to get either an HP or a DELL and was told to stay away from Toshiba for some reason, so i bought an HP and its great - now after reading your posts i can say im glad!

Mmm, i wouldn't touch toshiba with a barge pole now. If they give me my money back in cas, i'm heading for dell, and if they give it in vouchers, i'm heading for an HP or a sony. But, they may just replace it with one identical to the one i already have.

A Sony is good. My Dad got the top of the range Vaio laptop from them recently, very nice. 👍

yes they are stunning - was playing with one in PC world it was very nice indeed :) , came with a TV tuner built in the Laptop! wasnt hooked up tho just got a fuzzy screen!

Well, i reinstalled it, and now i'm getting the problems i had before it went in for the first time again, so i called hem again. When i asked the guy why he wouldn't replace it, his answer was: "Well, if it was a £500 laptop, we'd just replace it, but since it cost £1000, we don't replace it.". Does that sound fair to you?

ok here's what to do or not to do as well,

DO NOT deliberately break it untill youve tried this! trust me.

But do read up on your insurance policy make sure you know if you are illegible for a replacement, even take your policy into PC World and they will read through it and help you - if you are illegible and they are still claiming not to be, take it to Trade and Standards and you will have your new laptop within a week or two! even threaten the insurance company with trade and standards might be enough!

if this fails then break it and say it was an accident and deny everything!

and no that doesnt seem fair of them to say that, i dont think the value of the machine should matter so try my solution!

PCWorld is basically what is keeping you from fixing your computer. Reformat the computer (you won't lose the insurance as long as you use the system restore discs) and fix your problem.

I never get the insurance because just about all the times that you will need it is either A) a hardware problem that will take them 3 months to fix or B) a software problem that will take them a month to fix. Its a waste of money IMHO.

Well, we aked pcworld again today, and they realised that the insurance people were being way to harsh and stupid, and that we should have a replacement. So, we now have a Compaq V4075EA as a replacement :)👍. I don't have it yet though - they were out of stock in the canterbury store, so i have to go and collect it at another store in ashford, but still, i'm happy!

Good news! Well done for hanging in there! :)

Nice to hear your situation progressing to your favor. From reading your symtoms, I would say you had one of three issues, bad (or not enough) ram, write issues with the hard drive, or heat issues with the processor. Hope your Compaq gives you trouble free use.

I just recently got a Laptop. It's an Acer TravelMate 8100. I hope I don't have any issues with it as it's also my Work Desktop computer as well.
